Over the weekend, Epic Games released an update to its Epic Citadel demo app showing off the company's Unreal Engine 3. The demo had been featured during Apple's September 1st media event as an example of how the iPhone can handle generation of rich textures and imagery in gaming titles. The demo appeared in the App Store soon after the event, offering users the ability to play around with the demo themselves.

One of the bullet points in the "What's New" section of this weekend's update stands out, however, as it addresses iOS 4 for the iPad, an operating system that has not yet been released to the public or even pushed to Apple's general iOS Developer Program.
Fixed performance issues on iPad devices running iOS 4 or later.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs had announced at the media event that iOS 4 would finally make its debut on the iPad in November with the public launch of iOS 4.2.

While Epic may have received some preferential access to early iOS 4 builds for the iPad to support its efforts to demo its Unreal Engine 3 for iOS at the media event, it is still interesting to note that the operating system is making its way into the hands of at least one developer ahead of those involved in the general developer program.

Apple has partnered with major App Store developers in the past to show off new iOS features before they are opened up to the developer community at-large, but Epic seems to have an even more substantial head-start than usual on iOS 4 for iPad.

With iOS 4.1 making its way to the iPhone and iPod touch just last week, Apple has now paved the way to begin full developer testing of a unified iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Consequently, many developers are hoping that they will be able to get their hands on testing builds of the new operating system in the near future.

I seriously can't wait to get folders on my iPad! But it's also exciting to see people like Epic getting involved with game development.

According to Steve Jobs, iOS 4.2 for iPad is coming out in November, 2010. I wonder why it is taking Apple so long to update iOS on the iPad, especially considering the fact that iOS for iPad is very similar to iOS for iPhone and iOS for iPod Touch. Could the November release of iOS 4.2 for iPad signal the concurrent launch of the 2nd generation iPad with the front-facing camera?

I'm guessing something like that.

Safari tabs refreshing is so annoying on the iPad! So that happens due to the iPad not having a lot of RAM?

Yep, it annoyed the heck out of me when I had the iPad but I have learned to just keep it to 2-3 tabs at most, although usually I'm usually at 1 tab. I have an iPhone 3GS now, which has the same amount of RAM.

Man just wait until next year when iPad 2 comes out.
Can you imagine that beast with a retina display and 512 or ram?
Holy sh**!
I have the 16 gig wifi +3G and it is Fu***** awesome.
I'm going to post some videos of me using my iPad at my front desk job on south beach.

Can anyone actually explain to me what Epic Citadel is? Is it just an app to show off, or will it actually have some content when it comes out properly?

It looked like a third person RPG with combat, etc. Right now just the city is built for you to walk around in as a demo. How much of an actual world there will be, we won't know till release.

For some odd reason AirPlay in 4.2 excites me more than multitasking. Cant wait for them to release the beta!

As an avid gamer myself, I too am very excited, but they need to concentrate on doing something with the controls - IMO, you can transfer a D-pad/twin sticks onto that kind of device....especially with action games......

FYI, Refreshing tabs isn't just low RAM. It's also partially due to a bug in iOS3. So, iOS4 should help that a bit.

Welcome to last week. This has been listed under the patch notes of the app in the store.

Right now, it's a technology demonstration.

At some point, they will release something with content. Presumably, they will charge money for the latter. When? No one knows.

I just want GameCenter, Folders and an "On/Off" Switch for multitasking on the iPad.
