And as I've mentioned in previous posts, the lack of retina display doesn't bother me too much anymore since it will be an upgrade over the iPad 2 display quality.

I know I'm a retina snob, but I'd seriously reconsider if you love the iPad 3 resolution. Yes it's better than the iPad 2, but much closer to it than to retina. At the very least go look at a Nook Tablet before ordering, because that's the closest PPI comparison (169 vs 163 IIRC).

John Gruber himself said that text was basically identical to the 3GS. I could never go back to that no matter how much I'd prefer the Mini form factor.

I'd say go for it. The smaller screen is enough to get to purchase a mini. I rarely use my BIG iPad out of the house anymore, simply because it's too heavy and annoying to throw in my bag/purse. As a girl, I am really excited about being able to take my iPad Mini everywhere with me....

I am selling the wife's iPad 2 to a phone recycling company for £210 (put the order in last week and price is valid for 3 weeks!)

Have given her my iPad 3, as i found it was just too heavy and large for me so i never take it out of the house.

I also sold my vita and games for about £200 the other week on ebay, so in terms of the model i want (£449) i am mostly covered, the only thing thats bugging me is not the retina screen but the A5 processor.

Will games continue to run reasonably on it until this time next year?

Was half tempted by a nexus 7 32GB (should be out soon) but games are just better and more plentiful on iOS.

I am going for the mini, size is better for me, and like change, my3 is already listed for sale in the marketplace.
The retina display is no big deal for me, so I will try it and pick up a 5.

Already done exactly that. Sold my iPad 3 64gb on ebay a couple of weeks ago ahead of the announcement (on the assumption there would be a mini) to get best price.

Will be getting the 64gb black mini. Have the rMBP 15" which I use day-to-day and don't really use my iPad other than movies/browsing when travelling and magazines/newspapers when at home. Think its too large and heavy for use as a true commuter/travelling device (for me anyway) - the iPad mini is EXACTLY what I'm looking for!

It'd be like going from an iPhone 5 to an iPhone 3GS... just because it's "smaller"

I'm REALLY tempted to downgrade from my iPad 3.

My iPad sits under my bed, i use it on a night to read the news and flick through the news, it's awkward to hold when laying down and harder to type, it's dropped out of my grip and smacked me in the face many a times.

So on that basis i think i would be better suited with the iPad Mini, i need to see the display first, i've read it's really crisps so we shall see.

I'll be preordering the mini. I got the iPad 3 and fell in love with the retina screen but one I found out that not many apps support the retina display (especially magazines) and the weight distracted me, i decided to sell. I found myself only using it in the house. I decided to get a galaxy note 10.1 which offered me more productivity over the iPad. The retina was a worthy sacrifice. The mini is the perfect size to carry almost anywhere and I will probably carry it more so than my Galaxy Note.

Same here. I just took some pics of my iPad 3 and contemplating putting it up for sale.

Total downgrade unless you require a smaller device. But one would ask why you picked a 9" tablet over a smaller Kindle or Playbook?

Not really. All he'd be missing is the retina display, in all other ways the iPad mini has equal or better specs.*

If he thinks a smaller iPads suits his needs much better... why not? Again, all he'll miss is the Retina display. It's a big feature, yes, but its not disastrous.

It wouldn't be. iPad mini's specs are equal or better than iPad 3's specs, except for the retina display.

Why not? I'm sure there are people selling their 15" Macbook Pro for a 13" Macbook Air (with slower specs, smaller screen).

Far from it. The 3GS had scrappy screen, and many led screens of today blow it away. Amoled ones which I am sure it had.

It's true. Prove me wrong, please. Onliest differences: A5X and 9.7" Retina display.

Lack of Retina is such a huge step down from a Retina iPad...

Trust me.

If anyone is actually thinking about replacing a Retina iPad with an iPad mini... please do yourselves a favour to spare the regret - go to an Apple store and see how awful non-retina looks after using Retina.

My iPad 2 was sold after I got an iPhone 4... the difference is so huge - I can't see iPad mini being any different

I own the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 (and before iPhone 4), so I know what you're talking about.

I believe, however, that the iPad mini's display is much more acceptable than the iPad 2's display. Higher pixel density (163 over 132 ppi), less reflections and improved over-all clarity.

Yes, it's going to be a step down but it's not as huge as going from an iPad 3/4 to an iPad 2.

I think it's an acceptable step down if you prefer a smaller device that, when looking at the other functionality, is almost equal to the iPad 4.

I like the idea of a smaller iPad but I'm not switching until the mini has retina.

The mini will never have retina for the same reason the MacBook Air will never have retina. The point of these two devices is to be as small as possible and as light as possible with the longest battery life possible. Anything that gets in the way of this will be sacrificed. A retina display goes against all of these value points.
I'll stick with my iPad 3 and I'll also buy the mini. The value of the iPad 3 on the market makes it pointless to sell.

So I guess the 13" MacBook Pro will never get a retina display? Disappointing.
