OP - the email you apparently received from Paypal is a scam!!!!
It's a fake email that is made to look as if it is from paypal.

The same thing happened to a couple of friends of mine who were selling cars. One of them received a mail apparently from Paypal saying the funds had been paid etc. Luckily he was savvy enough to login to his paypal account and check first. Of course, no such payment had been made.

As the guys have said above, just use ebay, although you still need to be careful for scammers. You'll probably get lots of emails asking you to end the auction early for Buy it Now etc. Make sure you just see out the auction until it ends

To a certain extent you also need to be careful once you've sold it to. I would try and send my tracked post if I were you. Make this the only postage method.

Also retain any receipts etc.

Trust me I am talking from experience here.

Too many scammers out there when it comes to high value goods. :(

Good thing.. Just as an aside, you will want to have your auction get listed in the evening hours, typically between Friday-Sunday, to get the best results. (Not science, but this much I've picked up so far.) In fact, I recall a sad scalping situation where an iPad2 scalper apparently listed an iPad2 in the early hours of the morning and ended up selling it for less than list price.

I just used GarageSale on my Mac to list the eBay auction, scheduled to start tonight at 8:30pm, ending 3 days later on Sunday night.

Here's hoping for a good price!

I don't know... ebay is just as bad. I've heard too many horror stories about people selling ipads only to have the buyer claim the box was empty. The advice to sell face to face was given to you, but I guess you didn't take it. When dealing with something that costs more than a few hundred dollars, I would think people would be more cautious.

It's funny to think that anyone on the Net still has no clue about the plethora of Nigerian scams. In fact, I think I heard that scams are the number one industry in Nigeria by far. No joke.

Link to your eBay auction?

The link will probably be live at 8:30pm PT according to OP.

Yup, you'll want to make sure the buyer is reputable as well and has a nearly perfect feedback rating on eBay.

Also, OP, if you don't have a good reputation (yet) on eBay, you might not get as good of a price.

In any case, any method has its risks.

Craigslist Pros: no tax, cash upfront, no seller fees, etc.
Craigslist Cons: counterfeit money? personal danger? need to spend time to meet up, etc.

eBay Pros: pretty good price, least time-consuming
eBay Cons: transaction costs, need to wait for auction to end..etc

I learnt it quickly when I put some stuff on Craigslist but I can totally see someone not being up-to-date with these scams if they never paid attention to the online buying&sales scene. Congrats to the OP for avoiding the big disappointment!

The buyer just back to me telling me to send the iPad first, email him the tracking number and then PayPal will release the funds.

Looks like back to the drawing board I go.

Post his email on here. Let us have some fun.

Whenever I deal on Craigslist, it is in a public place, with cash, carrying my 9mm. Too many ****heads and scammers nowadays.

I wouldn't even sell on eBay due to the same PayPal reasons mentioned above. An iPad should not be hard to sell on Craigslist. I scoured it for days before purchasing mine and it happened to be the only one with a legitimate response. There are plenty of non-scammers on Craigslist looking for a non-scammer seller. Just have to be patient.

By the way folks your long lost relative has just passed away in Nigeria and left 2m USD to you the sole beneficiary. However I will need some assistance as the attorney in charge of his estate to get it to you due to complex Nigerian tax laws and banking regulations and if you can just pay me $2000 by Western Union and perhaps throw your email address and password and any other banking details in as well I will despatch it to you straight away. Sorry must go as Internet Cafe is closing for the night !!:p

Either the seller will request a refund from PayPal because they never received the item (no way you can track shipping as delivered in NIGERIA), or they are using a hacked paypal account.

DO NOT SELL TO THIS PERSON!

Edit: EVEN IF you get the funds released into your account, PAYPAL CAN TAKE THEM BACK. PayPal *always* can screw over the SELLER. Even if you ship the iPad and do everything kosher, the buyer can claim they never received it and you'll have the money taken either out of your bank or paypal account. Don't for a second think the money is safe. If you have a negative PayPal balance, they can turn it over to collections, etc.

Be very wary with PayPal as a seller. I've been screwed over and lost hundreds of dollars.

(Sorry for the CAPITALIZATIONS I get so pissed about PayPal!)
Right on brother!

Besides for the whole deal being a scam, no concern at all.

I cant believe the OP is willing to risk it and hat they cant find someone on this continent to buy an ipad.

OP I would be more apt to take an ipad that I wanted to sell and jump in my truck, do 80 MPH and hurl it out the windows than sell it to someone in Nigeria.

OH....DONT SELL IT TO NIGERIAN PEOPLE.

Sorry, that I use a cap but yeah my friend had fell into this scam already. So, sell it locally and cash only (for cash just accept only $20 bill).

Pity the honest Nigerian: there have to be some out of a population of 150 million, half that of America.

I have sold both on eBay and Craigslist. Recently I sold my laptop on craigslist and got several emails saying they would pay me more than I was asking for if I would just ship it to them (I cleary stated in person & cash only). I remember one long letter from a girl saying she wanted to buy it for her pastor but she lived in Florida and she would pay a few hundred more for it to be shipped. Made me want to ask her if it was the last laptop in the world lol but I just told her and the others to go scam someone else. They never replied back.

On eBay the expensive items you have to be careful. I've set my account to block most foreign countries Nigeria included. Also for shipping expensive items always get signature confirmation. That's what paypal told me would protect me. I also get it insured and take photos of the serial number along with the item in the box with the address on it. Never hand any problems.

Actually, it seems I figured it out.

The PayPal email I received says the payment is on temporary hold and the funds won't be seen on my account till after I send the item in the mail. In fact, it states as a preventive measure, the funds won't be seen on my account till I emailthe buyer a tracking number or scan the tracking info and email it to them.

This is interesting, no doubt I'm glad I asked on the forums. Then again, I probably wouldn't of gone as far as to send away my iPad without seeing actual money on my PayPal account.

That is actually how PayPal conducts transactions for new PayPal users who sell high priced items actually. I remember the first 2 iPhones had to be shipped first before the money was completely handed over to me. PayPal held it and then once they received a delivery confirmation they would release the funds to me.

Nigerian scams happen all the time. So many have tried to get me when I sell my iPhone or iPad that I just use the eBay Instant Sale now. It's a bit less money (but you save because of no fees from them or PayPal) but it keeps me from dealing with all the hassle of scams.
