Hi guys, so I decided to sell my iPad on criagslist and immediately got an answer from an interested buyer.

The buyer tells me he is in the navy and he is purchasing the iPad for his son, who is also in the navy... He tells me both are stationed in different places but he is willing to pay.

In fact, he just sent a payment for $550 to my PayPal account. It lists Nigeria as the place to ship and simply wanted to ask here if I should be aware of any discrepancies I wouldn't want to run into when shipping the iPad? Such as declaring it as Goods rather than Electronics or something along those lines. Just figuring I ask.

buy some kleenex. it can double as padding for your ipad on its journey, and they will help soak up your tears later when you figure out you have been scammed.

That is actually how PayPal conducts transactions for new PayPal users who sell high priced items actually. I remember the first 2 iPhones had to be shipped first before the money was completely handed over to me. PayPal held it and then once they received a delivery confirmation they would release the funds to me.

Nigerian scams happen all the time. So many have tried to get me when I sell my iPhone or iPad that I just use the eBay Instant Sale now. It's a bit less money (but you save because of no fees from them or PayPal) but it keeps me from dealing with all the hassle of scams.

Yeah, but when Paypal do that it's only for eBay sales (they have no way of knowing for anything else) and the funds do appear on your account, but aren't available for use (it happened to me a few years ago when I sold an original iPhone on eBay).
The letter he received seemed to imply they wouldn't appear on PayPal at all until the tracking was sent. This basically is a lie: They're not showing on PayPal because payment has never been sent and the "confirmation" email that gets sent is a fake

Have a look here for more details on these scam e-mails

Nothing against nigerians, but most of the time it's just safer to sell/buy within your area if possible, to avoid complications.

You know, I wonder how much of a hassle it is for legitimate buyers in Nigeria to actually buy products on the internet....their entire country is tarnished.

In a few days, PayPal is going to take the money back from you as it is most likely a hacked account. When selling on Craigslist, you should always meet in a public place and accept cash only.

"In God we trust, all others pay cash."

QFT. I got scammed by someone in Vietnam selling my original iPhone 1 on eBay. Payment arrived in Paypal and I thought everything was fine. Shipped the item only to receive an e-mail from Paypal 3 days later saying their payment was fraudulent and I was responsible for paying it back (this was *after* I had transferred the funds to my checking account).

I spent hours on the phone with eBay, Paypal, even submitted a report via IC3, the Internet crimes office. Got nowhere. For the love of god, do not ship your item. You were smarter than I was because you actually came somewhere like this to ask for advice.

OP - the email you apparently received from Paypal is a scam!!!!
It's a fake email that is made to look as if it is from paypal.

This is not necessarily true. See my previous post about my iPhone 1 experience. They can pay with a bad credit card so the funds are there, and then you get screwed later when Paypal realizes the payment was fraudulent. I couldn't believe it when the money was already in my bank account and they made me give it back...

I'm in the Navy stationed overseas. A U.S. servicemember wouldn't use a local address in the country they're stationed in. We use a military APO/FPO address, which is the same as having a U.S. address. All military units have a APO/FPO address.

Never, ever, ship anything to nigeria

Actually, it seems I figured it out.

The PayPal email I received says the payment is on temporary hold and the funds won't be seen on my account till after I send the item in the mail. In fact, it states as a preventive measure, the funds won't be seen on my account till I emailthe buyer a tracking number or scan the tracking info and email it to them.

This is interesting, no doubt I'm glad I asked on the forums. Then again, I probably wouldn't of gone as far as to send away my iPad without seeing actual money on my PayPal account.

Doing business with Nigeria is a surefire way to get your PayPal account restricted and all your funds frozen for up to six months pending a thorough investigation. Generally the criminal uses an unauthorized credit card number, and you can count on getting a chargeback even a few months later.

Do not accept any orders from Nigeria, and do not ship even to a U.S. address if you believe that the product will end up in Nigeria. These criminals use U.S. mail drop addresses, and UPS and FEDEX ship to non-government mail drops.

Be NASTY to these people, who will feign indignation and threaten to sue you. They are full of doo doo.

Nigeria is a nation of criminals, and your chance of getting scammed is virtually one-hundred-percent.

You should configure your PayPal account to block transactions from countries that you don't ship to. If, however, you receive such an order, refund the money IMMEDIATELY and DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, fill the order.

Never sell to a low ranked official in the Nigerian navy. Only deal with Prince level and above.

Why did you dig up a 1 and a half year old thread?

So we could post this !
