I totally agree - Apple did this last time too with inbuilt heartratemeasuring - it took months before Runkeeper could be allowed to use and measure the heartrate.

I´ve tried all running apps - and none gets access to the builtin gps...

Best standalone apps today are Runkeeper, Runtastic - they have access to all sensors minus GPS.

If only Apple would give access to share the workout to 3. parts sites within the app.?

Conclusion:
I´m on the edge to give up on all Apple products iPhone, iPad, watch, ATV....

Exactly .. currently RunGap will allow you to share run data collected by the AW Workout app to other 3rd party sites, but that doesn't include the map data sadly. Apple must be storing the lat/long data somewhere on the phone as you can see maps for all workouts completed in WatchOS3/iOS10 in the Activity app. It doesn't appear that the data is in Health however, which is where RunGap gets the other workout data.

Thx for the tip about Rungap (which I use) - didn´t know about the export from Health to other sites minus the mapping.

Wow it does export activities from Apple Health; distance, time, speed, cadence, heartratedata to Runkeeper plus Endomondo.

It must do for now until Runkeeper is ready for GPS....and mapping.

Got my brand new Series 2 this afternoon ...

It's much faster, much brighter, but unfortunately until we start seeing some 3rd party apps that utilize the watches GPS, it isn't any more useful for a serious runner.

There is still no way to get your run data from your phone to Strava, Training Peaks, Garmin Connect. Even using a great app like RunGap still only lets you export pace, distance, HR .. no map or elevation data. So for now the only difference between Series 0 and Series 2 is you get a map of your run in the Workout app. But unfortunately it's held captive there.

I am astounded there isn't even one available 3rd party app that uses the watches GPS available. I thought for sure Nike Run Club would use the Series 2 GPS .. but nope.

I am a little disappointed, but if and when we see an updated app from Strava, iSmoothRun or Runmeter .. I guess I will be happier with it.

I've written to the Danish developer at RunGap and asked if the GPS route/ mapping would be synchronized too - in the near future.

It's because Apple does not send out pre-sales units to developers. They have to wait until they actually receive a watch to test out the new features. Combine that with the fact they developers cannot develop and sell separate watch apps outside of the iPhone app and you begin to see little motivation to work with the watch from a revenue perspective.

That's insane. I couldn't believe it, but it's actually true, no 3rd party GPS yet. Ran today with my new Watch 2 and the Nike app (w/o iPhone) and the pace displayed was WAY off, about 2-3x slower than I actually ran. In the end, distance accuracy was okay, but during runs, the app is unusable. So I can either stick to the Nike app, forego GPS data and pace info during runs, or use the Workout app to get all data + information, but no uploads to the Nike platform, where all my past runs are. What the f...?

As a workaround, I'll use the Workout app and add my runs on Nike manually (via iPhone app). This way, only distance + pace will show up in my Nike activity history, but hey ...

Still nothing on the Series 2 GPS 3rd party running apps in the watch app store.

Thought we might have something by now.

Need to buy an Apple Watch series 2. Anyone here selling one? I'm in San Diego until tomorrow. Thanks
Pay in cash.

All I've got is this;

Hi,

Thanks for getting in touch and sharing your idea. Pulling map data from Health is on the unofficial "wish list" for future RunGap versions.

Best Regards from Denmark
Kristian

I'm confused. Doesn't runkeeper do this (track HR, GPS, etc)? Doesn't Apple's app track all this stuff and put it into health where other apps can read it (HR, distance, etc() ? (Except for... GPS maps ... that's the main concern yes?)

Nope - the built-in GPS in Apple Watch 2 doesn't work with Runkeeper or other 3. part running apps.

I don't know about Runkeeper, but the Nike+ app on iPhone only displays the Health data. It doesn't upload it to their servers. So if I track a run using the inbuilt Apple apps (Workout/Activity/Health), I can view them in the Nike+ iPhone app, but it's not actually stored in the Nike online database where all my past runs are (and therefore not visible outside my iPhone, e.g. on running.nike.com). Also, the GPS data is never displayed, neither on the Nike+ iPhone app nor on the Nike site.

It's a mess.

Still no apps for mapping yet?

Sadly .. both Strava and Nike released updates yesterday, neither included support for the Series 2 GPS. Kind of ridiculous that Apple touted the Nike app in the keynote and it doesn't work with the Series 2 GPS. Same goes for Viewranger also featured in the keynote.

I hope we haven't bought duds that the gps will never be used. Won't be a happy bunny. What's the point of advertising it if nothing blinking uses it.

I'm an Apple fan and generally an Apple supporter, but I think this situation is ridiculous. Apple owes it to their customers to provide some clarification here, and the journalists that cover Apple owe it to their readers to hold Apple to the fire to say something here. They are selling a device that doesn't have the primary feature they advertised, and there is no word from Apple when that feature is coming, if ever.

Well, in fairness, the native Workout app works fine with the Series 2 GPS. But that's it. I am a fan of running with the native Workout app, the frustrating part is that there is no way to get the GPS data from the Workout app to Strava, Training Peaks, etc. It seems the data is held captive in the Workout app itself.

Yeah, but Nike and Viewranger were both featured at the release of the device. There was no mention that they don't actually work on said device. And basically every review I've read of the new watch has completely ignored this.

Agreed.

i looked at RunKeeper on the App Store today and saw that it stated it worked with GPS for the Watch. Downloaded it and used it for a walk today during my lunch break and it worked perfectly. Always been a MapMyRun guy but may be making the switch now.

The gps will work if you leave your phone at home? I'm not sure it will do this.

I'm not seeing any Runkeeper update since Sept. 13 and no indication that it uses the watch gps. I'd assume it doesn't.
