Maybe it’s the angle and lighting because Space Black is actually black on my wrist. That looks like Space Gray almost.

Yeah, Space Black has usually looked more gray in Apple's promotional photos, which is why it's hard to say how much gray-er the new graphite is or isn't. It stinks we didn't get the usual media try-on session before ordering opened up (assuming due to covid.)

That's good. Perhaps they are making the Milanese loop using PVC now so that it doesn't scratch the screen like previous versions?

Possibly. It’s probably cheaper to use/manufacture PVD versus DLC. PVD uses a thinner substrate layer, but doesn’t nearly have the durability that DLC does. PVD coatings are way more common on firearm components, automotive tools, etc, but can gradually break down over time.

I'm pretty sure that the new "Graphite" colour will simply NOT have the marvellous effect of the SS Space Black color version - that is, optically melting the display with the housing and making the watch appear as one single monolithic, black object.
I think that this feature is less important with an AOD. Owning a SBSSS4 myself, the monolithic look (which I also like) is significantly reduced when the watch face comes on. Of course, when you intend to switch off AOD ...

I wanted to try the Milanese loop but, the known issue of scratching has kept me away. It would be nice to know they solved the problem. I would buy if that were the case.

I think this is perhaps part of the reason for the change. My theory is that a PVD band is less likely to scratch a DLC Watch.

Hermès space black series 5 was black as heck, wet/ shiny looking and I loved it. Tbh I don’t even like shiny stuff much or piano black but it just looked luxe and rich. It’s hard to go back to aluminum, this time I ordered the blue and the space black Hermès44, wondering if it will come in the same all black packaging like last year. It seems like the black Hermès sport band is confirmed

I agree but I kind of like how it looks more like metal now ? I wish you could just choose a casing, your own band and charge accordingly.

Trouble with that photo is the two watches are at different angles and thus reflecting different backgrounds. Makes it difficult to really do any sort of comparison. The article the photo comes from suggests the Graphite is more gray, but unclear how striking it is or isn't.

Here’s a video I found with someone that got the Graphite Color.
OK, that definitely rules out SS Graphite for me.
Don't get me wrong, it seems to be a nice color option - if there had never been a SS Space Black.
The Space Black is a mighty colour (melting display and casing optically together) - graphite is just "ok".
What a shame.

You can get the stainless steel black still. Just unfortunately have to get the Hermès model.

Jesus, the guy must have eaten a bag of potato chips before he made the video.

#1.) Naturally the graphite/black will show more prints, plus the reflective lighting in the video is Making the prints.

#2.) There is front/back layer Oleophobic factory coating, which can sometimes present an oily like reaction until it starts to wear off over the course of time.

I know plenty of people here are missing the SBSS, but I've owned that model since the S3 and to me, this new Graphite model looks amazing and is a welcome change. Honestly couldn’t be happier with it, it’s gorgeous.
If I didn’t own a SB link bracelet I’d be more open.

Photos I’ve seen of the GraphiteSS with SB LB were not my taste.

I’m glad you’re happy though.

Completely understand that, it would’ve been nice for Apple to keep SBSS around as an option for sure.
