I keep reading posts saying the bezels are bigger on the new S10. Is this really the case ?

The screen is 1mm bigger from 45mm to 46mm but has the watch size grown bigger by 1mm ?

45/46 is not the screen size but the case height.

A lot thicker.

However it should be noted that when looked at head-on, the metal of the watch case is narrower.

The black bezel of the screen glass is definitely thicker though.

Great catch! So the „glass bezel“ is larger, but the „metal bezel“ is smaller, making the „total bezel“ about the same. Which makes sense as the increase in pixels is about the same, percentage-wise, as the increase in case size.

Potentially yes, though I think I prefer the look of the narrower glass.

The wider 'metal bezel' was introduced into the design with Series 7 which was when the narrow bezel screen was introduced, so arguably the new Series 10 bezel size is a design decision rather than cost-cutting or limitations of the new screen.

I think one has to see the S10 in real life to really judge this, but I agree that in pictures, I also prefer the S9 aesthetic.

I mocked this up to help visualize the difference. The glass appears to "cover" more of the front of the watch, which is why the black bezel appears thicker, but only because less of the metal watch case is visible from the front. It's a different proportion of bezel vs. watch case, but similar overall screen coverage.

Gives them something for the S13 I suppose, but I agree that I prefer the slimmer glass look of the prior design. Perhaps whatever they did to engineer a thinner case required more glass.

I personally much prefer the design of the S9 and it is pretty much for this reason that I will not be upgrading.

The new series 10 looks like a huge step back, the bezels are much bigger it doesn’t look as sleek

Like the iPhone has slim bezels they should have made the watch have an even bigger display with making the bezels smaller, in my view it looks like watch series 6 with thicker bezels. I see what people are saying about the case but still it looks much worse than my series 7

Couldn’t they have made the frame and glass smaller with still having same display area then the bezels would be slim and rounded into the watch?

They have the best engineers in the world working for them. There are likely reasons why something like this is not done, either technical or because it would be too expensive to mass produce. It‘s likely that the iPhone 16 Pro border structure tech is coming to the Watch in the next few years.

But why would they downgrade it, never has any device got bigger bezels a year later, it only gets smaller, this is a set back and doesn’t look sleek

I agree, pretty disappointed. I think they probably reduced the casing because they were planning to use a larger mini led display. When that didn’t work out they had to make compromises in the screen size and bezels.

Something definitely feels funny about it, especially after the rumours this past year of a bigger redesign, magnetic connection for bands, etc. Not too dissimilar from 2021 when the Series 7 launched and there was all those rumours/renderings of a redesign with flat edges floating around.

Does make you wonder if they were working on a more radical redesign that also required microLED and they couldn't pull it off and went this route instead (a while back of course).

Even tho the case is smaller so bezel is bigger on a silver watch now you will notice more bezel more than series 7, this 10 year watch should have been a huge change inagine no bezels just full display

Yeah I’m a bit disappointed.

While the overall case/glass bezel size may be similar to previous gens, the bigger glass/black component relative to S9 does make it look like a step backwards, frankly.

I was hoping this would be the year when we could have the display go almost completely to the casing edge following the curve of the glass. Imagine how stunning full-color watch faces would look on that. Tech ain’t there yet.

Yeah I’m so annoyed by this, Apple has lost the plot it’s a step back not forward
