Did you just make that statistic up? How could you possibly know that?

84.6% of statistics are made up on the spot.

As someone who gets paid to design and animate things professionally an iMac is more fast enough for me, and I tax my machines a lot more than most folks do.

An iMac will be more than fast enough for most users, if you'd like me to be mathematically accurate.

I agree with most but not 99%... Either way its not enough power for me and especially not at the given prices.

And what are you doing that you need more power?

In any case the iMac has never been a best horsepower for the buck machine, it's a good overall value when combined with the display and OS.

What the @#$! is up with Apple over the last 3 years. They seem incapable of providing honest updates to their hardware. Yes, the case is pretty, but I want to be able to play today's computer games on it. Apple has been steadily falling behind for 3 years now in the hardware realm.

I have been holding off on buying a Windows machine in the hopes that the iMac would get a decent upgrade, and instead they are offering a nicer LOOKING machine with a slower GPU than the previous model!? This isn't how computer hardware, especially EXPENSIVE, computer hardware is supposed to be upgraded. You don't wait 2+ years to upgrade a product, or in the case of the Mac Pro 900 days if you want to stay at the top of your market. I don't want a Windows machine, but that might be how I spend my money this cycle, gaming is important to me. My old Mac Laptop will do me fine for non-gaming applications.

I know that iOS is now the big money maker, but Apple's iOS ecosystem REQUIRES people buy Mac's if they are going to be developing for iOS.

Who is this new iMac for??? Who is the ideal customer???

UPDATE: while I still have concerns about Apple's actual ability to upgrade their hardware lines over the last 3 years, if the BTO option is actually available with a better GPU, I might stick with Apple for at least one more generation. (Although, honestly, it still might better to wait it out for another to see if they put out a new Mac Pro.)

I don't normally ask this, but do you have a learning disability? I'd like to be sensitive if you do, but that comment makes me think you might. (credit)

What are you ranting about? The 680M will be able to run almost any modern game at 1440p with ease. It is just not possible to build a faster AIO and yet Apple managed to pack it into an extremely thin envelope. This is truly some excellent engineering!

I'm also disappointed with the direction aapl chose to go with this iMac. I was hoping for a more professional machine, but in reality the iMac has always been a consumer machine that got too good so everyone stopped buying mac pros. Apple wants to make you buy a mac pro for anything serious, and now, you pretty much have to. I think the new design is gorgeous, but now with Steve gone, Jony Ive is just have one design orgasm after the next. Apple used to combine form and function equally, now they care much more about form. Definitely the most beautiful iMac to date, but in terms of specs, I'm far from impressed.

Out of curiosity what spec wise is disappointing about the machine?

I am also struggling to see what people are "disappointed" with?

It has the option for a 680M on the 27" - currently the fastest possible single mobile GPU you can put into a machine without going SLI/Crossfire, and it has the option for a Core i7 should you really want one, plus 4 RAM slots.

The 21" has some compromises - I think it would be nice if you could put your choice of GPU into the 21, and the lack of user-upgrade RAM is a compromise, but otherwise it is a solid machine.

People expecting something with more power than the 680M were just dreaming - there's just no way to get a desktop GPU inside the old one, let alone the new one.

It's not a desktop... It's a pretty screen/case with laptop internals that literally costs an arm, a leg, and a kidney. F' that I'm building a custom rig.

This has been true for every single iMac. Why are you surprised?

God damn people, you haven't even seen or used the new 2012 iMac and you're all ready disappointed? Seriously.

I have a 27" 2011 BTO iMac that I am keeping for the next few years but I am interested in checking one of the new 2012 iMacs out. No way I'm discounting it yet.

This.

The best gpu dell is offering in there all in ones is the 640m. Same with Sony and Vizio.

Hp offers a workstation all in one with a Xeon CPU and quadro 1000 card. Not sure how this one stacks up looks like its an older card but this machine is also almost $3k

Major issues with this model:
  • Single HD bay, not user replaceable
  • Lack of Firewire (I have 5 firewire devices that I use regularly)
  • No user installed RAM upgrades (21.5")
  • No optical drive

Minor issues:
  • Heat

Issues with all iMacs:
  • Laptop GPUs
  • Built in monitor (I want to use a professional monitor, I could use a secondary display with the iMac, but then I'm stuck with also having an inferior second display)
  • No expansion slots (eSATA is a must for me, could always buy thunderbolt to esata hub, but why spend the extra $200 when I already have the card?)
  • Low max RAM specs.
I'm doing a lot of video editing and intense photoshop/indesign work. Lots of RAM and a professional GPU are very important features for me. I will most certainly be buying the next Mac Pro.

The biggest disappointment though, is that Apple is starting to value form over function. They could've done a major iMac upgrade in a bigger case, but they basically repackaged what was already there with slight spec bumps. Apple saw that they made the iMac too good, too many pros started buying them, now they want to remove option after option so that pros are forced to buy a mac pro.

Those aren't major issues at all for the intended iMac consumer.

Need more FW ports http://www.amazon.com/NitroAV-8-Port-FireWire-Professional-Repeater/dp/B00506K4NC

No optical drive...LOL. Puhleeze man

Single Drive Bay. iMacs only recently added another bay and that's in the 27" only.

Mobile GPU - fine for the intended market.

If you need a Mac Pro...you need a Mac Pro. The iMac has and will continue to be a consumer desktop.

I have the 2011 iMac 21.5" and it is indeed better than the new one. I guess you could the upgrade a downgrade.

Apple needs to understand that the thinness does not matter since it is a desktop that sits on a desk. It does not go in a bag or a pocket. It could be 2 mm thick, or 2 ft. thick, it does not matter as it sits on a desk and takes up the same amount of space. Nobody puts things behind their iMac. That space is already lost.

There is no DVD drive. Attaching a separate one defeats the purpose of the thin form factor, and clutters things up, the complete opposite of the idea of the iMac.

I bought the second option $1199 a year ago, right when it came out. The processor and Hard Drive option is the same on the low end iMac, which costs $100 more.

There is no retina display.

The graphics card is almost the same in performance and memory as my current one, although it is a different brand.

They put the SD slot on the back which is a PIA to access.

There is no user configurable memory

My 2011 iMac is better

So I have to spend $30 on a TB to FW adapter and then another $160 on a hub, no thank you! Firewire is far from dead, it is a mistake to get rid of it, especially on a desktop

No optical drive...LOL. Puhleeze man
sure, not needed by most, but I still use mine on a monthly basis. More peripherals to hang off the back, extra expense

Its more about the fact that it is nearly impossible to replace on your own.

Mobile GPU - fine for the intended market.
sure, but I'm not the intended market. If someone eventually makes a TB PCI expansion chasis that supports a GPU, then I will probably consider an iMac. The GPU is the most important feature to me behind processor and RAM, and I already have a Radeon 5870 that I recently purchased and intend to continue using for many years.

If you need a Mac Pro...you need a Mac Pro. The iMac has and will continue to be a consumer desktop.
What I really need is an xMac. I was hoping the new iMac would bridge the gap further between itself and the Mac Pro, especially with talk of the mac pro going bye bye. I think this new release means there will DEFINITELY be a new mac pro next year.

Certainly, I'm not the intended customer. I need the extra power of the mac pro. Don't get me wrong, the new design is beautiful, but I was hoping for, at the VERY least, a replaceable hard drive. That would've made the decision a bit more difficult.

It is a consumer machine, and as I've said many times today, an effort to divide the pros from the consumers, forcing us to spend the extra $$ on the mac pro for features we consider essential.

In response to this thread's title: Serious disappointment...

The only real disappointment would be if Apple DIDN'T announced new iMacs today! The fact that they announced them up to 2 months before they're available indicates that at least they're listening to some of the pent-up demand for a new model. I, for one, can't wait to get my hands on the new model...

Well, thats another disappointment. Historically, iMacs have been available on announcement day.

I think your missing the point of the imac there chum.

I disagree on this one point as this is actually a good thing. Apple actually told the public that they are making iMacs, imagine if this event had gone by and they had said nothing about iMac whatsoever.

I'm not missing the point, I'm saying why I personally am disappointed with the iMac in general. A bit off topic, sure. But I am definitely not the intended iMac customer. And looking into the future, stating reasons I will be screwed if the mac pro is discontinued.

Uhh... Hate to break it to ya buddy but they are offering the 680m which is twice as fast as the previous AMD 6970m.

It's a nice upgrade but it is not twice as fast. It is 50% faster in benchmarks. It will allow you to max all games currently out pretty much save for the Witcher 2 which is the most demanding of them all whereas the 6970m you'd need to stick to high vs ultra for many current games that are demanding. See these reviews and benchmarks for details:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6970M.43077.0.html

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-680M.72679.0.html

Clearly a very nice upgrade in any case. Personally, I wouldn't want to give up an optical drive for it but to each their own. I want that functionality for one more system lifetime and I am fine playing stuff on high settings. :D
