Like I said the surprise part always screws you. My wife got me a Kindle Fire for xmas but it was because I researched and told her specifically I wanted it. Had she sprung it on me I might not have been as receptive.

I may not understand how THIS woman perceives giving a gift.
Besides, this is not a male/female thing. You are right. Some people (gender notwithstanding) would be offended if they gave a gift and the recipient wanted to exchange it. I am of the opinion that you shouldn't be giving gifts if that is the case. A gift is something you give someone to show your appreciation, and it is the THOUGHT that counts. MY woman would rather me have what I want and would not be offended in the least if I asked for an upgrade.
And I think you are also right. It does say a lot of one's character and relationship. I'd rather have a strong relationship where something like this can be discussed and a win-win situation can be arrived at rather than pretend and not say anything and hide my true feelings or desires to avoid offending my partner. That kind of relationship I am not interested in. YMMV.

She needs her phone to work always since she's the one carting my daughter around and stuff. If she breaks down on the highway or something I would want her to have a WORKING phone.

Wait, the thing will crash so badly that she could get stranded by it? I mean my iphone crashes but a simple restart fixes it.
I don't use my phone as a phone so much but since, yeah, it is partly there so that if I breakdown on the highway or something I can call for help I'd be pretty pissed if it crashed so hard it was useless even as a phone until some one could fuxor around with it enough to figure out what's wrong.

Just returned the iPad 3 32 gb . Will get my 16gb iPad 2 on Friday .
I decided on this for a number of reasons
1) she is Japanese and my Japanese is not fluent so it's hard for me to explain exactly why I would return her gift .
2) it would break her heart . She is very sensitive .
3) I just saved myself 50000yen . So I can buy a whole host of other stuff. For one I purchased an apple tv . For me this is great as I use Flickr YouTube and Vimeo regularly . Also AirPlay is gonna be sweet too .
4) the new iPad is surplus to requirements . I didn't get 4g nor would use it . I am not interested in reading so many books on iPad so retina display is nice but not essential . Also I have a sweet dslr so don't need the upgraded camera .
So all in all I'm happy . I get an apple tv and free iPad and she's happy ( me too) because she can give me a personalized gift .
P.s; I can always buy the new new iPad next year with quad core CPU and FaceTime hd

I was told by more than one Apple customer service employee that they would now take back my engraved iPad 3, as I ended up getting one with a bigger memory instead. Why not return both, and then buy another iPad 3 with the same engraving she put on the iPad 2? Everyone wins. If you didn't tell her, she may never know at all ... they are very similar in appearance, especially when you only have one at a time.

For what it is worth, try this method, exchange the engraved 2, I am sure Apple would be happy you are upping to a better item by buying a more expensive model. If not, then yea I would take the girl over the iPad. I am sure the girl gives much better pleasure than the iPad too.
I specifically asked the apple store this exact question this morning. They will accept it no questions.

Just went to the apple store . They told me in Japan the apple retail (bricks and mortar) store and the online store are different entities entirely .
So I can't return the engraved one or anything else for that matter at the retail store because it and the online store are separate business entities ...
