What we seem to have here is either a bunch of people who, ignoring good sense, bought intel machines with their last dollar and are sad that they will miss out on features, or people from a generation with a massive sense of entitlement.
What I see here is Apple selling these intel machines with less features than M1 machines and people trying to convince others it’s good because it’s Apple.

Save your “money” comments because it is ridiculous.

that’s not going to happen
I agree it's not likely to be curtains for all Intel Macs within 2 years, but the way things are going, they seem to be quite hurriedly dropping models by historic standards. Big Sur dropped 2 years worth of Macs, Monterey drops another 2 years. I don't know if they will keep it up and next year will drop 2015s and 2016s, or if they will take a break, but given the 2014 MacBook Pro got dropped while the identical but for force touch 2015 is still supported suggests this is being driven by a desire to pare down the number of Intel macs that need a version of the OS quickly rather than by how well the OS actually runs.

remember when os updates were all or nothing if your machine was supported?

none of this patchwork features supported
That has never been the case with iOS. Even with MacOS, some features have required more modern Macs for a while (e.g. AirDrop).

Big Sur is *far* less buggy than Catalina. What bugs are still troubling you in Big Sur?

And, if you are concerned about bugs, you’d probably be in favor of apple concentrating on just ONE architecture. A lot easier to avoid bugs when you don’t have to deal with a massive number of hardware configurations and divide your efforts between two architectures.

Trustd using 100% of CPU usage for example...

This is an outrage. No technical reason this can’t be on Intel.
Forced depreciation in action.
Well actually there IS a technical reason. Missing neural engine.

but anyways.. your analogy:
“This is an outrage. No technical reason this can’t be in Windows!
Forced robbing in action from Microsoft.”

get it?

No, it’s not good. For folks that REALLY want those specific features (who knows why) and currently have Intel systems, it’s bad. Unquestionably. However, I WOULD say that users should take this as a reminder of how Apple operates and think VERY carefully prior to purchasing another Apple product.

Oh you mean like “camera portrait mode” on iphone 6s, raw photos on iphone 6s with ios 14, face id with iphone 7 and ios 14,… get the idea?? 😉😉

Correct

With external display link adapter hacks apparently people have been using more, but officially, it's just one external on the M1 laptops that have been released thus far.
I am using a powered displaylink dock with my MBP13 M1 and running two external displays for a total of three screens

I get not bringing hardware-intensive features to older Macs, but some of these seem completely achievable on any hardware. Then again, this is a very predictable Apple move, so I can't say I'm surprised.

Just maybe Apple chose to implement these functions with the neural engine. Having them work on Intel Macs might have required coding a different implementation which they didn't want to do.

Fun fact - this hits the iOS side as well. Read the fine print and many of these features will only run on an iPhone or iPad with an A12 or higher processor despite iOS 15 itself running on an A9 powered iPhone 6S. Even the iPhone X, which has a first generation Neural Engine is excluded, as is the A10-powered 2019 base iPad. Excluded features include FaceTime blurring and spatial audio, on-device Siri processing, updated 3D maps, and using your phone as key for hotels and other locks.

So it’s not an Intel issue per say, Apple is simply going all-in on the Neural Engine and other capabilities specific to its newer chip designs.
And T2 in the current Intel Macs is basically an A10 (It's used for processing the images from the webcam in the 202o iMac).

No doubt they have the resources as one of the largest, wealthiest companies in the world. They're still selling Intel Macs today. Forced deprecation sucks for customers.

They have limited number of programmers. And they don't want to hire more. Apple like small teams, an inheritance from Jobs.

glad I sold my 15" MacBook Pro couple of weeks ago and using 16" issued by work. wont buy intel based Mac anytime soon!
They dropped support for my 15" MacBook Pro completely with Monterey. Fortunately I had already given it to my daughter. 😀

Apple does not have a massive number of hardware configurations.

Apple's business is to support existing customers who have spent thousands of dollars on computers, and in this instance, they kicked those existing customers to the curb. This is just Apple being greedy, as always.

No, Apple job is to support what you have.

Don't expect everything new to work on every machine.

I never understood why people automatically though Intel based machines would get new OS updates. Even those apologists in here, two in particular were all gung ho!.

They'll get security patches and that's it. Once the whole line is transitioned, Intel machines will never get a fully functioning OS.
I expect Intel Macs will get full OS updated for the next 7 years or so.

Yet it happens to our iPhones every year.
Really? Has there been one year over year update that dropped support for the previous year?

I know forum members like to get really upset when one particular thing doesn’t happen for them, but if we’re comparing Macs to iPhone support I’d be thrilled. My mom is still happily using my old 6s and it does everything she needs it to.

The fact that Macs are now going full Apple silicon means to me that these things are going to have even longer useful lifespans. I’m still happily using my 2015 MBP, and that’s going to my girlfriend when I pick up the next announced MBP. It’ll be the nicest computer she’s ever had, and she’ll be ecstatic with it.

The idea that not getting a damn 3D map is causing the teeth gnashing here is really something else. If a 2015 MBP is still perfectly usable in 2021, I’d bet anything that a 2021 M1 machine is still going to be perfectly usable for *average* people come 2027 and beyond. My mother isn’t going to be furious that she doesn’t get some obscure feature.

Why are you acting as if a computer is NOT an investment with future support? Are you aware that there are Mac Pros that people have spent literally tens of thousands of dollars, or do you think Apple only makes low end consumer grade stuff?

Support doesn't mean getting new features. You should never expect any new feature and the ones you get, you should just consider a free bonus.

Apple is smart. They are walling their products off so that once you get get the latest features and the latest M1 machines, you can't stop upgrading and spending more and more money.
I, for one, now have an HP Windows computer, and a second Android phone, if and when they allow iMessage on Android (and they will hold off as long as they possibly can) I'm going to stop using Apple products, as they have become too overpriced for me. The iPhone 12 Pro Max will be the last iPhone I buy, at $ 1,298 (with AppleCare). Many other options abound for iMessage, like Signal, WhatsApp.....will simply have my friends and associates who want to CONTINUE to communicate with me, use those apps which are readily available and free. This will be a slight inconvenience, but....

My Android phone is a Motorola One Ace 5G, which retailed for $ 415 including tax. It's a great Android phone, and despite no wireless charging, is good enough for this 73 year old retiree. My Windows machine is an HP Spectre 15" laptop with touch screen!!!! Imagine that. With 16GB RAM, 512 GB solid state drive, at $ 1,499, a comparable Mac would be priced at about $ 2,799 to start, and with AppleCare & dongles and accessories, it would go for over $ 3,700. True, the 16" Macbook Pro has 1TB of storage, but I don't need that.

Ok, so now I am ready for all the haters to call me stupid, and ignorant......go ahead make my day! I'm waiting for it!

Get a grip. It’s still getting OS updates, it’s just not getting some individual features. People will make a personal decision if neural engine features are important to them or not, and then decide their upgrade path.

Hmm, I think the ONLY person that “can’t stop upgrading” is the person that, MORE than anything else, more than the usefulness of the system, more than what they do with it MORE than what it can do for them, MUST have the latest and greatest NO MATTER WHAT. I’m sure there are millions of those in the world and likely several hundred in these forums. But, in the end, that’s a THEM problem, not an Apple problem.
