Very well said jethatfield!! I liked how you looked at all the different angles!!

Personally I believe in the right to have guns too, however I cannot see myself ever purchasing one because I KNOW I would end up shooting someone I cared about by accident if I ever was in a situation of that much stress! Not that I truly know what I would do, but I feel like I am one of these people that would practically have a nervous breakdown and start crying uncontrollably if something bad were to happen. I hope that would not be the case but I do get panic stricken very easily.
i thank god that where i live, almost nobody has, or needs a gun...i certainly don't have one
but i once had this tree hugging, hippie art teacher who was a small, thin woman who lived in one of the worst areas of nyc, where starving artists in the big apple often end up, and heard her stories of having a gun...it definitely changed my stereotypes and notions i had of who has guns and why
we can't let all people have nuclear and biological weapons, like some anachists preach, but also we can't disarm every citizen at the same time lest we fall into a totalitarian system like communist countries of the past or nazi germany
it's all a very careful balance and the imperfect nature of us humans will always cause accidental shooting and suicides that would not have happened if there were no guns...where do i draw the line, exactly? probably in a slightly different place than anybody here and no two people have the same view on personal safety and rights as to how to protect themselves
i would like to see a day where a person can have some sort of laser gun, ala star trek, which could stun a person or knock them out without killing them
i have heard too many stories, in the bay area and los angeles, about policemen trying to subdue a person but having the limitation of having a firearm with deadly force, regretably killing the person they intended to simply stop what action they were doing
and it's especially sad when a police officer gets in a shootout and shoots the wrong person, a bystander, and they get killed or injured...and usually in such a case, violence erupts against the law enforcement and law enforcement retaliates in kind and then there ends up being more dead and injured people on both sides stemming from the one original incident...so our current, deadly force firearms are not the answer, or even close
