What's a 7-11 guy?

AppleMatt

it's two degrees of a criminal before a 9-11 guy (aka the hijackers)

for instance:

1-11...petty theft under 100 dollars
2-11...theft over 100 dollars
3-11...assault
4-11...assualt combined with theft
5-11...white collar crime
6-11...trafficking illegal substances
7-11...child molester
8-11...manslaughter
9-11...murder, or any crime that ends up with people dying, as in hijacking

ok, if you read this far, then i feel sorry for you ;)

actually 7-11 is a major convenience store franchise in the states

Back before my days it was common practice for amateur operators to invite over the local boys and girls to visit their stations. It was very innocent and it helped spark the interest of amateur radio in many of the amateurs who are active today.

Yup, I remember my sister did some volunteer work at an elementary school and she got reprimanded for playing soccer with the kids because if any of the kids ever said she touched them or did anything inappropriate...

Seems to me that interaction between kids & adults is a pretty natural thing, I mean who are kids suppose to learn social skills from?

Don't be ridiculous. Two kids ****ing is different than rape or molestation. In Colorado you can be 19 and have sex with a 16 year old, as long as its consensual.

A sex offender isn't someone who has sex with someone who is of the age of consent, and consents to have sex. True someone who is not within the legal limit can be considered a sex offender, but most I'm sure are rapists and people who go after kids.
Hey, yer the one that proposed a blanket punishment for all sex offenders w/o regard to the specifics of their crimes. I was merely pointing out a situation where your punishment would be overly harsh, IMO. If you don't like it maybe you shouldn't speak in absolutes?

i'm getting tired of seeing this phrase on so many seemingly international forums... even if he's in america, which he is, it's still sort of annoying.

and your point happens the world over, not just in the states.

I agree, the important social skills are supposed to be taught by adults, but it seems that too many times there are accusations popping up. Just like you mentioned your sister playing soccer with elementary school kids, obviously very innocent, and even she had to worry about some kid popping up with some crazy accusation. It is insane, and part of this is parents who are so fearful they begin to ask their kids questions, and they ask these kids so many times that they end up saying something happened.

Does anyone have any stats on the effectiveness of the sex offender lists in reducing crime?

I would indeed like to see this information aswell, because I don't believe it helps reduce crime.

my area has two sex offender web pages...the official one from the county and one hosted by a prankster who decided to target people he/she didn't like

This loser hasn't been severely beaten or at least sued for libel or slander?

It's a small corner/mini store that sells gas, cigs, slushy drinks and is named 7-11.
Watch the movie Clerks by Kevin Smith, that's a 7-11 store

We have lots of 7-11s down here, I'm surprised they're not in every country.

Great, thanks for starting this thread. Now I know there's a sex offender wanted for sexual assault that lives right across the street from me. As well as two that live a block and a half away... and another 70 or so in my zip code. Yay Chicago!

it was not only an inaccurate and fabricated site, which actually looked pretty official at first, but they also charged a person $14.95 for the privelidge to see the site each visit...they are no longer on the internet and probably got caught taking advantage of the hysteria that happens around these types of issues

it won't be long before some computer criminals put up a pay site for suspected terrorists in your neighborhood

the legit site is the megan's law site for my area...and it's free and searchable by county, city, and zip code

Oh YUCKO, I just pulled up my cities list and then clicked on the stats and pics of the individuals, WTF...most of the charges are attempted rape, forced sodomy, and taking indecent liberities with children. These people should NEVER be let out of jail---hell, most of them have a little red star beside their name for being wanted again and the police cannot find them....so the address does no good--they could be anywhere! :(

The ONLY fear I have with living alone is having someone breaking in and raping & killing me. One thing that is keeping me safe and that is the fact my place is a complete mess almost all the time...good luck to anyone that can make in without tripping over something (ooouchhh---like my shoe's HEELS--excrutiating pain if stepped on and I couldn't walk for a day after doing it myself!) ;)

i do hear you

as i stated, as a liberal or liberally leaning moderate, i was very, very angry at the fake child molester's site preying on our fears, and asking for a credit card number...sheesh

but for real threats, like home invaders, i totally agree with us yankee's right to bear arms to protect ourselves

of course, i would control that right with believing that we should be allowed to have guns....but not too small and concealable as to let psychopath jodie foster loving weirdos be able to walk up undetected to a president or world leader, or too large in being able to take down the president's helicopter or large commercial or military jet of any sort

if violent criminals had the knowledge that people, around the world, had small arms to protect themselves, i think the world would be a better place

we don't live in a perfect world though, and that leads me to my equally strong beliefs against very large weapons for individual citizens or very small, concealable weapons that are good for "nothing but killin' a man" as stated by skynard

Very well said jethatfield!! I liked how you looked at all the different angles!! :) Personally I believe in the right to have guns too, however I cannot see myself ever purchasing one because I KNOW I would end up shooting someone I cared about by accident if I ever was in a situation of that much stress! Not that I truly know what I would do, but I feel like I am one of these people that would practically have a nervous breakdown and start crying uncontrollably if something bad were to happen. I hope that would not be the case but I do get panic stricken very easily.

I was watching TV one day and saw that a former co-worker was wanted for child molestation. Everybody at work was shocked. He turned himself in to the police later the next day to police.

Of course, everybody who worked with him remarked, "I always thought there was something weird about him", or something like that. They'd probably say the same thing about any of us if we were accused of such a thing. It made me think that anyone around us could be a child molester and we'd never know it. It's not like they have a sign around their neck that says "Child Molester."

Turns out he was also a repeat offender. He had a history of sexual battery in another state.

i thank god that where i live, almost nobody has, or needs a gun...i certainly don't have one

but i once had this tree hugging, hippie art teacher who was a small, thin woman who lived in one of the worst areas of nyc, where starving artists in the big apple often end up, and heard her stories of having a gun...it definitely changed my stereotypes and notions i had of who has guns and why

we can't let all people have nuclear and biological weapons, like some anachists preach, but also we can't disarm every citizen at the same time lest we fall into a totalitarian system like communist countries of the past or nazi germany

it's all a very careful balance and the imperfect nature of us humans will always cause accidental shooting and suicides that would not have happened if there were no guns...where do i draw the line, exactly? probably in a slightly different place than anybody here and no two people have the same view on personal safety and rights as to how to protect themselves

i would like to see a day where a person can have some sort of laser gun, ala star trek, which could stun a person or knock them out without killing them

i have heard too many stories, in the bay area and los angeles, about policemen trying to subdue a person but having the limitation of having a firearm with deadly force, regretably killing the person they intended to simply stop what action they were doing

and it's especially sad when a police officer gets in a shootout and shoots the wrong person, a bystander, and they get killed or injured...and usually in such a case, violence erupts against the law enforcement and law enforcement retaliates in kind and then there ends up being more dead and injured people on both sides stemming from the one original incident...so our current, deadly force firearms are not the answer, or even close

THAT IS A GREAT IDEA...I wonder why with as technology advanced the world is there isn't something like that already:confused: However maybe because everyday citizens might use it to have some sort of fun. It could fall in the wrong hands and there would be no way of tracking it like bullets/guns these days, but hey, innocent people would not have to die at least.

You mean something like a taser? Technology can't even give us a hand held laser gun yet you expect a hand held, laser-based stun weapon? Effective non-lethal weapons are a crap load more difficult to create than effective lethal weapons. Tasers, tear gas, rubber bullets, and bean bags (fired from shot guns) have all been used as alternatives to lethal force, but the killer (pun intended) is making something strong enough to incapacitate someone 100% of the time w/o seriously injuring or killing them. Everything from microwaves, to sound waves, to super-adhesive (think Spider-man "webbing" someone to a wall) has been experimented with. If you can create an effective, hand held non-lethal weapon police departments and militaries around the world will beat a path to your door.

I am completely for the sex offenders list, but perhaps as one who has been a victim of a sexual offense, and who has a sister who was date raped, I am a bit biased. However, here is my observation based on the person who sexually molested me. It seems to me that sexual crimes are ones that are easily repeatable because of the emotions and hormones that are involved. You can't deny that sexual gratification emotes some of the strongest euphoric feelings a person can experience. Sexual predators become addicted to these feelings and look to reproduce them often. Thus, making them more likely to be repeat offenders. As has already been mentioned, children are more vulnerable and suseptible to becoming victims. Therefore, we must take extra measures towards protecting them--hence the list.

I would like to say that those offenders can be rehabilitated, and in my heart of hearts I wish I could believe that, but I have a hard time thinking so after I saw the person who molested me go on to molest five other girls. He molested me when I was 11 years old. It was my best friend at the time's older brother (I think he was 14). It happened when I was spending the night at her house. I woke up to the feeling that someone was touching me inappropriately. I won't go into all the gory details, but it was a pretty traumatizing experience. I had an extremely hard time telling my mom about it the next day--I can now understand why women don't always come forward when they're raped. The only reason she really found out was because he had cut my underwear. I told her they had torn, but she saw right through that lie when she went to repair them and proceeded to drag the awful truth out of me. She reported the incident to the authorities, and I was never allowed to go to the friend's house again. Oh, and the friend knew what had happened because she woke up when I started crying. A couple of years later the friend brought pictures to school of her brother's 16th birthday party. His parents had hired him a stripper, and from what I was told he loved every minute of that present. When I was in eighth grade I got a call from the police. They were trying to gather evidence for a case against him that was going to trial. That was when I found out he had molested the others. I was glad I didn't have to testify against him because even after all that passed time my body still shook when I gave the police my report of my experience. I don't know what happened because I lost touch with the friend and moved away some time after that, but I'm guessing that since I wasn't called in to testify that they had a pretty strong case to convict him without me. I don't remember his name or even his face now (too many years have passed and I've blocked it out), but I would hope that he is out there somewhere on the sex offenders list and would hope that it has saved others from having to deal with the kind of pain, shame, and loss that I have felt.

Edit: I don't think my story is that uncommon either. As I've gotten older and moved to different places I've come in contact with others who have had similar experiences of being molested by repeat offenders. I truly believe that this is a type of act that is very hard to stop, and I believe that it has a great potential of leading to more violent sexual (and perhaps non-sexual) crimes as they are repeated.

being a huge fan of the discovery and history channel, i have seen all the shows on the above weapons...either they are too hard to operate or they actually have a high chance of killing someone

there are martial arts forms, i am okinawan, not introduced that much to the west however, that can make almost anyone pretty capable of defending oneself but that is not practical because it's so time consuming

technology will bring something in and the cops will definitely come up with it before any private citizen does

floriflee,

Reading stories like yours tend to sway me a bit in my thinking that the sex offender lists don't do much good, however then I begin to realize that sadly even with the sex offender list the same thing could have happened to you. Perhaps if this boy was a known sex offender before your encounter, you wouldn't have been allowed to go over and visit and this wouldn't have happened, and perhaps it would have protected the others. However, I have yet to see any prove that this sex offender list as kept down the amount of people who are sexually abused. So though I might feel differently if I would have been the one abused, I still feel that these lists don't do very much good. I will have to do some research later to get the numbers of sex offenders today as compared to 20 years ago. I would think the number would be much higher, based on more people reporting the crimes and the fact that the crimes have increased. It is sad and sick, and I don't know how we will stop such crimes, but I do believe the crime rate for sexual offenses as increased.
