Very close on paper, and it is being spoken of as being in the same league as the SGS2 in previews and reviews.

Really?

Can someone with the gs2 comment on the keyboard compared to the iPhone 4? Also how do you put the phone to vibrate and/or mute being that there is no hardware switch? These are both important factors in my decision so I'd appreciate some info if possible. Thanks.

I use Swype. As for how good that is compared to the iPhone 4 keyboard, I personally type faster on Swype. Some people prefer the iOS keyboard. It's a personal thing. You have to remember on Android you can install many different keyboards, including the iOS one from the market.

As for mute, that's very easy. Just slide down the notifications bar and there's a a toggle for that. You can fit up to five toggles and you can customize what goes there. It's all very convinient - better than pressing the home button twice, really. I included some pictures to explain:

How does the basic stock keyboard compare to the iPhone keyboard? Thanks for your insight!

The stock Samsung keyboard is definitely not as good as the iOS keyboard. I've used Windows Phone 7, WebOS and every other type of soft keyboard, and I've never seen a stock keyboard as good as the iPhone's. It is an amazing keyboard and Apple really should be commended.

That's why I'm using Swype.

The sgs2 is simply superior in every way possible. I'm afraid iPhone 5 won't be a big deal and sgs2 will still rule for a considerable amount of time.

I agree with you partially. If the iPhone 5 uses the A5 (very likely), it will indeed not be as powerful as the SGS2 in terms of processor.

I use Swiftkey. Used to use Swype. Still do at times but Swiftkey for me is better. There is another App in the Market just like Swype called SlideIt in case you didnt know.

I just downloaded and installed SwiftKey. Don't know if I like this yet but I'll give myself some time before deciding which keyboard is better. Thank you for your suggestion! Using it to type this right now.

you should check out SwiftKey X Beta. SwiftKey X Beta.
chart

It is the beta for the next major update to swift key and adds some nice features. If you buy swiftkey they will give put that update for you as well so no need to buy it again.

As for swiftkey it take getting used to. I know it took me a few days but afterwards I loved it. I do hope back to swipe from time to time depending on what I am doing at the time. Both are great keyboards and have their uses.

Yup, thanks for the link. Wish you linked me before I shelled out the money for the stable release... :( It's quite nice and I'll try get used to it. As of now I think I still type faster with Swype because I've used it longer.

Very close on paper? The HTC sensation only has 1 GB of storage while the Samsung Galaxy S II comes with 16 gb. That is a huge difference.

I just don't see how the sgs2 is superior in the apps department. One thing I think Apple has done very well is the App store. Seeing how I don't own a sgs2 I can't say it with any knowledge but I still find it hard to believe that the sgs2 beats the iPhone in this area.

Yep, iOs has alot more apps than Andriod. This is why I''m not sure if I'll go android for my next phone.

I have the paid version as well and from what I understand is it will get the SwiftKey X upgrade when it gets out of beta so long run you will keep getting updates.

When I had my SGS2 it was some of the little things that annoyed me most about it. I had it for about a month before switching back to my iPhone.

One issue I had was using the standard keyboard with predictive text turned on. Typing in Co-Pilot would result in multiple characters. For example if I typed "d" it would come up as "dddddd". Proper annoying and the only way I could get round it was to turn predictive text off when going into the app. Not sure this would have been allowed to happen with the version in the App store.

I found that whilst a few of the apps in the Android Market were equivalent to the iOS counterpart (Sky News one example) the rest just seemed nowhere near as polished and like bad copies. It was good to play with new launchers and widgets and get the phone just how I liked it, but as soon as the novelty factor had gone I wanted to get my iPhone back.

I don't deny that the SGS2 is nice bit of kit, but for me I was a little underwhelmed by it as a complete package. For me the iPhone does exactly what I need it do and very well.

Having said all that Kies air was awesome. Hope that come to iOS sometime soon.

It gets better as you go as it learns words you use. Just let's you use fewer steps when typing.
Just my opinion though. Swype for me I had to go back too often to fix the words. Happens a lot less for me with SwiftKey.

Man, the things I learn from you.:D I had no idea I could customise those toggles. *goes off to customise...*

I wish that the Atix had those power controls in the notifications area. I just put the stock power control widget off on the last page. Screw the blur ones. Hell the only blur widgets I use are the contact quick task. Other than that it is all android or ones I downloaded

As for other things about Android I love is the fact that you can install your own keyboards. Swiftkey X Beta blows iOS autocorrect out of the water.
Mix that with swype it is great because I will flip between the 2 depending on my mood and what I am doing.
Right now I spend most of my time with Swiftkey over swype. Longer you use Swiftkey the better it gets because it has more time to learn your own typing style. The learning function were it pulls from Twitter, SMS, GMail and Facebook helps speed it up in learning but it is really you using it that is the biggest boost for it.

I also did the change from iPhone (2 years) to Galaxy S2/Android.

All i can say is that i am verry happy with it,not regretting the jump in the least.

Nuff said, prevent myself from being flamed by the fanboys.

It's true. Android apps are nowhere as polished, but for me, the advantages offered by the OS such as a dedicated file system and hardware acceleration more than makes up for the lack of polish in apps.

Lol at ImperialX's calculus 1 homework. I remember those days.

It's Calculus 2 actually. ;)

The Android App store is getting there. There are some really cool Apps in there and some that just arent there a far as being as good. For example, you cant get the official scrabble game, But there are variations of it that are decent but i personally would rather just play the CPU than an actual opponent and thats what the others like it do so i like the Scrabble Apps in iTunes better.

There are many of the same Apps in the market that is in iTunes as well. iTunes had a two year head start though so of course it is going to have more Apps but i was getting Apps from iTunes before they excepted 3rd party developers Apps and there wasnt a lot of them before that as there is now and now Android has well over 100,000 of them so it isnt like there isnt a lot of them to choose from.

Anyone who has actually used both knows that iPhone 4 is light years ahead. It's not even a contest. Specs don't sell phones, it doesn't matter how fast or how much memory your Samsung phone has. Funny that my iPhone UI is still faster, smoother and I can run 10x more apps than you can, as fast as or faster than you can.

You dont know what your talking about. The iPhone had a two year head start and is already, right now with the release of these new phones, is playing catchup and will continue to do so from here on out because when Apples new phone comes out, it will be another year till the next one comes out
