I beg to differ. Gingerbread brings a lot of bug fixes under the hood. My N1 feels more snappier and less prone to random reboots with Gingerbread than Froyo. It's inexcuseable for carriers and OEMs for shipping a new Android phone today with Froyo, considering Gingerbread has been out since December 2010. Heck, Ice Cream is coming out in Q3 2011.

I was reading a lot of the OEM were going to skip Gingerbread completely and just go to Ice Cream. Reason for it is Ice Cream is bringing a lot more to the table than Gingerbread. Namely better support for dual core phones and allow HoneyComb apps to run on it the android 2.x line.

What happened to Honeycomb?
Honeycomb table design.

Basically 3.x is tablet and 2.x is phone.

As far as I'm aware, Honeycomb optimised applications already run on older versions of Android thanks to the Fragments API (unless they are Honeycomb specific). Google earth was recently updated to include support for Honeycomb as well and still works perfectly on the Xoom.

I suppose this is similar to iPad/iPhone universal games. :)

That's my biggest concern if I ever switch to Android. I'd like to be able to get the latest OS update with whatever model Android phone I have. I don't want to buy an Android "put model name here" and find out in six months that I can't get the latest and greatest firmware upgrade.

And that is the problem with android.

And that is the problem with android.

One could say, that's the beauty of Android. It's not holding itself back.

I understand for people coming into tech recently, upgrades for old models and backwards compatibility is seen as a must, and almost expected. but this is the worst way to move forward.

We got to where we are today in computing by racing ahead during the 80's and 90's, leaving a trail of out of date hardware, before we started to level out, as we have done in recent years.

The same could be said for phones and tablets. THEY are the things now racing ahead, and keeping dead wood going will only hinder fresh ideas from developing.

Android WILL level out in time, but the only way to move the very fastest, is to create the very best you can with every step you take, and if that means some old product fall by the wayside, then so be it.

It's tough at the beginning of such a process, but it will even out in years to come when certain points are reached.

Till then, enjoy the exciting ride, and don't moan that your 3 year old device is not supported any more.

It is very rare for Samsung to do this, but they got me excited about this phone. Very curious about Ice Cream Sandwich as well.

I am going to just wait for the Nexus three and see how that will work. Then I will have the choice between the iPhone 5, the latest HTC phone, and the Galaxy s II

if they implement Ice Cream Android OS efficiently and without any major issues, I will be thoroughly impressed.

If they can slap on Ice Cream to any device, then this will resolve the fragmentation issues that have been plaguing some of the earlier Android devices.

Have you ever seen the extended battery for the thunderbolt? Screw that

I'm not talking about those monster 2700 to 3200 mAh battery options that require a special case back (although some people obviously find them useful).

I meant the internal extended batteries. For example, the stock Thunderbolt battery is what, something like 1400 mAh?

An extended version that fits in the same space can be 1600 to 1700 mAh, which gives up to another 20%. (Similar batteries are closer to 30% more for other HTC handsets.)

An extended version is the first thing I always get for any smartphone with a replaceable battery. It also automatically gives me a spare for those few times that I need to run back out again all night without having time to recharge.

(Heck, I keep a spare even for dumbphones. Can't count the number of times that my wife has panicked in the morning because she forgot to charge her little flip phone, but I was ready with a spare battery to pop in.)

Very well deserved clap.gif for the SGS2 regarding camera performance!

Can't wait to see the new Sony lenses on the iPhone 4S/5

Sorry mate, but I can compare only models which exists...not rumors
When iPhone5 will be reality, someone like you will ask me - Why do you compare brand new iPhone with six months old SGS2 ;)

Because they'll run on the same gen hardware?

Oh wait, Androids can't compare to iOS devices with the same specs. Sorry.

A lot of those orders should be cancelled soon.

Per-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S III begin next weekend.

I think a lot of the orders are people pissed that the iPhone 5 may be running late this year. They want a high-end phone and they are not apple loyalist and will likely switch with the best available upgrade.

Meh, I don't trust those d0uchebag OEMs anymore. Remember how slow phones were being updated to froyo? The rumors were that some OEMs were skipping froyo for Gingerbread. Well, gingerbread is here already, they are just making another excuse.

Fragmentation will still exist, thanks to OEMs and carriers putting their own junk ware, skins, and customizations. Ice Cream is just to bring the phone and tablet to the same OS version, just like iOS 4.2(?), bringing iPhone and iPad to the same OS version.

Ginger bread is a little faster and adds only a few ui tweaks and a new keyboard. Their is nothing really to actually get excited about. From What I notice it is only non android owners who care about frame-ware issues. Most people are happy with Froyo and because they are not missing any features they have no complaints. Most Consumers don't even notice the difference anyway.

The fractionation Google hopes to fix is the performance issue. Their goal is to make sure that people will be able to run every app that their phone is physical capabilities. It will not be like iOS 4.2 it will be very different. It is not to bring Honeycomb and Android-phone to the same level. It is to give the phone more of the UI options added to honey-combs. They want the tablet version to be different that way people using tablets will get a more powerful OS to complement their more powerful hardware. At this point Honeycomb is looking less and less like a mobile OS and more and more like a full OS. It now adds more complete UI options to the OS.

Sorry but what were iPhone 3G and 3GS made of? You are being ridiculous. Have you even held the Galaxy S II? Everyone that does says it feels really elite.

Also it has a SAR value of 0.338 thanks to that plastic. It is lighter and thinner than iPhone 4 as well. This cheap-looking argument is boring and invalid. Live happily with your perfect, elegant, super expensive looking iDevices.

Bless em. If they want to pay more for shiny glass and a big silver Apple logo, let em eh. I have to agree with you on this, having tried out two of these - they're not at all cheap feeling OR looking, and smash a hole right through iOS and any iPhone. Full. Stop.

Did the question really need to be asked? It's blindingly obvious the iPhone 4 hasn't a smudge on the SGS2. iOS = boring, stale & dumbed down OS, without my even going near the bare specs. You guys haven't even got bluetooth file tramsfer yet (probably the next "feature" that Apple will "reality distort" you with) and what's with the lack of Linux support? Are you serious?

Hi-flipping-larious, this thread.

PS: We Android devs don't need a Mac to write/test (physically!) apps on, or some £60 p/a fee to apple just to test my app on my device which I own - another winner. By all means, live the closed-loop, restricted, over-priced dream, if you want to, as long as you face facts - you're not the best, it continues evolving - there IS no overall best platform yet.

I wouldn't mind testing out the Samsung Galaxy s2 when it becomes available in the US. Maybe this will be the Android that tips the scales for me.

Bless em....

Perhaps. But there is a best platform for me. Obviously you have come to a different conclusion for yourself. Just don't let the door hit you on the a$$ on the way out of this iPhone forum. On my part I promise not to spam you or to insult your intelligence in Samsung/Android forums. Have a nice day. :)

Apple really need to step their game up with iOS 5 and iPhone 5. The Samsung S2 is an incredible phone and with ice cream sandwich update - hopefully fragmentation will be a thing of the past.

If some big changes aren't implemented with iOS5 I'll definitely consider jumping ship.

Just because this is an iPhone sub-forum, doesn't oblige people commenting to HAVE to prefer them.

You enjoy your Apple PiePhone, that's cool with me.

Agreed. There is nothing requiring you to like the iPhone to post in this forum. However, the rules do state that the following is an instantly bannable offense:

Trolling. Do not post in order to anger other members or intentionally cause negative reactions.

And in the forum rules on debate the following is prohibited:

Trolling. Posts that appear to be designed to cause argument or irritate rather than contribute to a constructive discussion are considered trolling and will be treated as such.

I'm not asking you to agree with me. I'm asking you to show respect in this forum to those of us who happen to like the iPhone. I have perfectly rational reasons for my choice. I won't belittle your preference for the Samsung, so don't belittle mine for the iPhone (particularly in an iPhone forum). M'k?

Iphone 4 is outclassed by the latest crop of Android phones. Apple needs to step up their update cycles or this will always be the case.

Sigh. Apple will release something within the next few months that will raise the bar again... and for a few hours we will be spared the iPhone killer posts in this forum.
