Shanghai's Apple Store Opens to Large Crowds

Am I the only one who finds it odd that in China their T-shirts are made in the USA and here in the USA our T-shirts are made in China?

Hypocrisy at Apple's best...
It was very well studied by Apple... if the t-shirt had been made in China (like many other things...), the value would have been different...
It was a very clever movement from Apple :) towards marketing and imaging, because everything else is made in China...

I find rather stupid this store which is obviously aimed at tourists and over the average chinese people...
I would like to know how much an employee of that particular store earns :) I bet he/she needs a few months to buy the lowest MacBook... because I doubt Apple would start doing what Microsoft and many other software development companies started doing a few years ago... lowering their extremely overpriced products as everything was being pirated...

Is this a real Apple Store or a replica?

No, the replica is here:

My dad builds those stores, and they are not EXACTLY the same, although they are similar. There are things apple could use from their store as well that they have managed to make better and improve upon. They're not as bad as you think, they have added some pretty cool stuff.

thank god I am american chinese, China's system is real ****ed up.

Seriously?!? At least in america its becoming the norm both people to work. I would never marry a girl whos not independent.

And there are really two chinas, city china and country china. City china is developed with what you expect from a developed country, but country china is so far behind, its pretty damn big the gap.

Thank you for the great article, the second one was particularly interesting - I have to admit I turn off my lights when I am not in the room, if I need to heat the house I'll close the doors to the rooms that I'm not actually going to be using, I maybe eat meat 2-3 times per week. The problem with Hollywood movies is that they give an unrealistic vision of what life is actually life in the west which reminds me very much of the essay I wrote about 'romanticisation of the other'.

Well said. Such unrealistic stereotyping goes both ways, Americans get a distorted picture of other countries as well, usually with negative portrayals. Also, we have to watch for generalization in those two articles as well. I wonder if the 80% chinese women who live in non-urban areas still want men with apartments and cars... Beijing does not make the whole china... And these city dudes who expect a 15 course meal for a celebratory dinner, need to go to one of these american buffet restraunts to experience the equivalent. It is more cultural than affordability that American homes do not cook a 10 main course dinner.

Hey, your essay sounds interesting. Do you have a link? If not, you can email me..

I don't think so. A lot of companies use American Apparel shirts... people like them better.

I know huh, Microsoft Office and Windows 7 Ultimate Super Extreme Edition Platinum are such a bargain these days.

May the picture in this article remind us Americans of a universal truth: Never, ever get involved in a land-based war with China.

Is that what you think of first everytime you see people from another country? (i.e. "Can we kick their ass if we go to war with them?") Or is it just with peoples from "rogue" countries?

Give us some examples (i.e. surface displays that are actually useful). I live 30 minutes from Microsoft yet the first ones were out-of-state. Go figure. ;)

I suppose the first Apple store wasn't built near Cupertino eh? Or was it?

BTW, 4 stores in a year or so time is a typical Microsoft half effort. These stores were not meant to be a long term strategy apparently. I'd expect Microsoft to close all four of them within a year just like they dumped WebTV, Plays4Sure, and KIN.

Yes, we all know Microsoft has failed, clearly. Trust me I'm an apple fan, my house is apple as is my dad's computer. No, the stores are not going to close, they are actually heading out to China soon for some stores. They are working as hard as they can to push out stores, but they're all human, cut them some slack. They will open more stores, and the number of stores per year is only going to increase. They have much more to come, and more to finish in this year. I like apple but not everything Microsoft does is a complete failure either, they saw apple's success and learned. Yes, they took ideas but ever hear - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But hey, I'm just saying ...

And BTW I believe the first apple store was somewhere in North Carolina or Virginia although I'm not positive.

So literally everything here is made in China, but the t-shirt for the China store is made in LA... OK...

China is big, so we are working on it.

The apple products is everywhere before the apple store opening in this two year, apple is doing enough research on the market for 10 years already.

How are the people of Shanghai & China as a whole are reacting to the broader Apple Products, along with this new store opening beyond the iPod/iPhone??

OS X as a whole?
Product pricing: Mac Pro, MacBook, MBP, Mac Mini, etc
The brand as a whole (quality, pricing, longevity, how it works for them beyond others)?
Can they, as a consumer base, deal with slightly behind the curve technology spec's for equally or lessor priced Windows machines?
