Shared iPad 2, anyway to limit access to email?

pin-code locking specific folders / apps is actually really trivial.
seperating multiple accounts within a single app (E-Mail.app for example) is far more complicated to implement and might seriously break the overall ease of use of iOS.
Oh definitely -- that already exists for apps like Dropbox, Friendly facebook, Atomic browser, etc... it's the full multiple-user system that people are talking about as being "simple" which I have issues with

Yes, it's much much easier to implement on an iPad given how restrictive it is. It doesn't even have to be true multi-user, ala actual OS accounts. A big part of the difficulty with mulit-user is figuring out the permissions, which is grossly simplified on iOS. All the apps are already sanboxed and can't interact with anything else.
<shrug> Maybe I'm overlooking something, but it seems to be a major update, rather than an overhaul of iOS.
OP this was one of the main reasons I jailbroke my iOS devices.
Jailbreak then search for "locktopus".
Works perfectly and seamlessly with the device, once you set the password in Settings, you just hold down any app on the screen so it wobbles and along with th "X" in the corner you get a tiny lock on the other side. Click and presto, protected app.
I'm not a prude but my email is private and the mail app is too good not to use!

Why not set up the email account but don't enter a password, then when others use it they cannot send/receive emails. Just set the account to not delete from server when you delete from iPad and that way, you can keep a clear iPad inbox and only you can enter the password when you want to use it, and when you're on your computer you still have the emails saved away.
Simples?
i thought of this first and tried it but it doesnt work. how do you "not" enter the password? you need to upon setup?

Well you need the password to set up the email account, but when it's set up, go to settings and remove it. Then just select the home button to come out of it (as you can't click done). Then, should someone access your emails (that you've already deleted from the iPad only) you get the message that the password it incorrect.

There is a mail restriction. It restricts modifications to mail accounts. So if yo go to settings>mail and make your email account inactive then go to restrictions and restrict mail account modifications.

Not really a good workaround as then every time you do want to check your mail you would have to go in add the password back in settings. I've also found it sometimes doesn't work (just exiting the settings) and of course it still displays any mail that was already downloaded and not deleted... And if they go back into settings and just hit cancel it restores the old password... And of course if you forget to remove... So No Tadaaa for you!

So a third party JB app can do it, but it also too complicated for Apple to give us a decent and useable feature?
Apple should let us have this feature without a JB even if it isn't a complete user profile set-up.

It's great idea. The phone comparison is a stretch. I think Apple is sending out videodrome waves and some of you are highly susceptible.
Why a stretch? I think that is the intent of an iPad or any tablet device, whether all users agree with that or not. And besides, don't knock the videodrome waves until you've taken off the tinfoil hat and tried them, because they feel SO good...
People said it was too complicated to add a multi-account function, not to lock certain apps. An app lock feature would be a reasonable solution, although personally I'd still just rather not have anyone else using my device if privacy is such an issue.

for some reason it will not ask for the PW again and allows entry to email.

Yeah, I did get rid of it. After hunting it down like a madman for nearly a week after its release, I finally got one. Played with it for a weekend and ultimately decided it's just not for me. I have to say it's a really beautiful device, and a pleasure to use but, as much as I hate to say it, it's really just a big iPod Touch/iPhone. I firmly believe it'll evolve into something more capable, in future generations, and I will certainly buy it again when that happens. For now, I'm just going to get an 11" MBA instead, to fulfill that tiny-computer fetish of mine. iPhone gives me all the iOS I need in my life.
Ultimately, the thrill of the chase was the real excitement. I ended up selling it for $3 more than I paid.
And yet...once Apple does implement it...and they will seeing how ios and osx will merge at somepoint, this will hardly be seen as "lunacy" as you so put it...
I don't think you quite understood me. Just allow me to "lock" the mail app w a password. That's all I want. No separate accounts, etc.
And I don't think it's unreasonable to allow others to use the iPad, even if I have work email on it. It's obviously pretty useful as a coffee-table computer. EMail is personal by very nature. The iPad allows locking of other apps. Why not mail?
Read more closely. I don't need separate user accounts. I just want to password lock the mail app, just as I am allowed to lock certain other features.
