Nintendo doesn't "always" miss the mark. You have no idea what you're talking about. Nintendo has dominated handheld console sales since the 80's. They have 3 consoles that were the top sellers in their respective generation; NES, SNES, and the Wii. They are a multi-billion dollar company.

Nintendo's DNA is very similar to Apple's, in that they like to drive the entire experience. If Apple followed your suggestion, they would port the iOS over to Samsung phones to make a quick buck.

Bad idea.

Even a multi-billion dollar company can only bleed money for so long, what with the Wii's more lackluster sales later on followed by the Wii U not-so-hot sales numbers. Here's hoping they can find renewed success in the console market with the NX.

Um. This is not that big. I mean this old game... why do they have us signing up for a notification...? It's not that big. They're acting like this is on the same level as some new AAA next generation console type stuff.

It's not even going to be as successful as Pokémon Go. And Pokémon Go is losing steam. We thought they were on the cutting edge but it turned out it was just a fluke. They're not as smart as they seemed.

Im still waiting for them to use the Apple TV. The iPhone can easily be the controller.

Hopefully. But people have different needs from games. I see a lot of people here want simpler, cheaper games and demand every developer should produce them.

I haven't had a 'fulfilling' time playing games on my phone yet. Angry Birds was great fun years ago, and recently Pokemon Go too - but that's gamified fitness rather than a regular game. (Which is great!)

I keep expecting to be pulled into mobile gaming but the 3DS with its steady stream of awesome titles, and the Japanese RPG/indie focussed Vita gets me from time to time. I do hope others get into alternative platforms as there's no reason to put all your eggs in one basket.

But yeah. The 3DS is just amazing in the breadth of games it can play. Cheap mobile-esque titles, "virtual console" classic games from Gameboy to SNES, all DS and 3DS games, medium sized indie titles.

But like I say people like different things. I think the only wrong ideology is that all companies abandon large platforms and produce small mobile games.

"They"? Who, Nintendo? They had nothing to do with Pokemon Go. What a strange post.

I really hope this helps Nintendo be successful with the NX!

Fingers crossed that they blow us away when they announce it.

I'm stoked to see Mario coming to iOS but I cannot help to think Nintendo is cannibalizing its own mobile maket share. It's just a matter of time before we see other Nintento "exclusives" coming to iOS and Android.

I disagree.
Here's the thing... I'm the quintessential Nintendo fanboy. Late thirties, grew up in the heyday!
However; at this point in my life- I have ZERO interest in buying a GameBoy. Period. Full stop.
Gaming is like, less than 5% of what I do on my iOS devices- which are already higher cost & higher powered than Nintendo's next handheld, for certain. So, in "my" market... they will DEFINITELY get money out of me for original Nintendo titles for iOS, but it is all gain, no loss. I wasn't going to buy a GameBoy, as I said.
Now, they could get $5 out of me, or $50.... or eventually $500- if they play their cards right!
Example: simple game like the one they showed - I'll throw $3-5 at them. Excellent ports of past AAA games - I'd pay $10-15... & (whimsically); if they created a Mfi controller that was REALLY good & started manufacturing full on console quality games for iOS- I'd pay ~$40 for the controller, & $20-30 for the games!

Considering that Pokemon software and Nintendo 3DS hardware sales in the wake of Pokemon Go's success Nintendo seems to be on the right track with this one.

I disagree.

Luckily for you the last Game Boy Nintendo released was over a decade ago.

Why are there no ports of Nintendo games? Because Nintendo wants you to maximize your experience. And to properly play existing Nintendo games you need a physical controller.

I don't care what you say, you're wrong, touch screen technology is not good enough to replace a game pad. Nintendo doesn't want your experience handicapped.

But if Nintendo makes a game from the ground up designed for iOS, that's different. That's an experience they want you to have.

And if Apple was able to get the man who INVENTED the modern video game on stage, that's a revolution.

Although.. they opened with Nintendo and closed with.. that awful looking Oz game.. that's just..

They make most of their money from cheap hardware which is one or more generations old. They churn fan favs like mario and Zelda so you keep buying the hardware. It works well for them but releasing a simple Mario game will net them cash and generate interest in The NX

I'm not sure why he hopes the new iOS game will draw people to Nintendo's hardware. Does he get a cut of hardware sales? I suspect that like many people my age (mid-30s), I'll buy the Super Mario Run game in order to briefly experience a part of my childhood again on a device that I always have with me. Nothing more. I stopped doing console gaming by the time I was about 14 or 15 years old.

You've missed out on some really great games.
[doublepost=1473470201][/doublepost]I skipped the 3DS & Wii U because I felt Nintendo fell short with the hardware (inferior display with the 3DS and underpowered Wii U). The Nintendo NX or whatever they decide to call it will need to knock my socks off for me to buy it.

I mean it is huge to have Mario join a non-Nintendo platform, this will draw in a lot of money for Nintendo. And I was pleasantly surprised to see Miyamoto on stage.

However, besides the graphics the game seems very basic sadly. I wish it had a bit more depth than your average run & jump iOS game... Maybe a more traditional side scroller would've been great.

Or something like that Super Mario 64 Fan remake?

The problem with making games more in-depth than just tapping the screen to jump is that you'll need more "buttons" on-screen for more control. The you end up with a lot of on-screen buttons and your thumbs covering up all the action. Personally I play both, but I see physical buttons as always being superior to anything touch controls can offer.

You must be in the minority then. I'm from that same generation and always buy Nintendo's consoles for their exclusive franchises. I'll definitely get Super Mario Run and its great to get a Mario fix on the go when you're away from home, but you can't compare gameplay experiences on an iPhone and say a multiplayer Super Mario game in the living room. There's a place for both IMO.

I understand the reasoning, and I understand that platforming really kinda sucks without a d-pad. but man I wish we could could more games with an in-depth experience on the iPhone. It seems like everything that comes out for iOS these days is this ****** freemium garbage.

They should start selling the SNES classics they already sell for cheap on the Wii U and 3DS in iOS. Like Super Mario World, or A Link to the Past. Among others... Maybe some GBA games? I hope that's what this Fire Emblem title is, I don't want it to be dumbed down.

2010mini - you're right this would be awesome on the AppleTV.

Nice to see the game coming to the iPhone, sad Nintendo still doesn't see the console market as a loosing bet long term. The future is smartphones, tablets etc. not ip dedicated 3rd place marketshare consoles. Apple has sold 10 times the amount of iPhones (and most of those in the last 4 years) as Wii's. Toss in high end only Android phones and that is where the market is.

But its a free world, I'll buy this game when its released.

Isn't this game going to be free? Why is everyone saying they will buy it?

The Macrumors story and the article itself make it clear it's not 'free', but paid-for with a one-time fee:

With its new iOS Mario game -- which will eventually make it to Android -- Nintendo is also admitting that most kids' first interaction with technology is no longer with one of the company's consoles, but the smartphone or tablet of a parent. This convinced Nintendo to finally put its most famous IPs on mobile devices, and helped them decide to make Super Mario Run a one-time-only paid game, so parents don't have to worry about their kids spending large amounts of money on in-game ephemera.

I am glad its not freemium, because I hate that business model immensely. I would rather pay some money and just play the game and not have to worry about waiting time for more lives or buying something etc. That said, generally the console hardware isn't really a huge profit source and its the software that they are making their money from. I am not sure how well they will be able to sell games for such a high price on iOS though and so they are in a bit of a tough place. They may not care about losing their hardware sales but they do care about losing their method of delivering software that people will pay $50 for

They had me at "Mario", and lost me at "running". Maybe next time, Nintendo, maybe next time...

I don't like "Freemium" either. But sometimes if it's not overdone and I don't need to buy something every other day to advance gameplay, it's okay.

I love the concept of Pokemon Go but I can understand why people are losing interest if their experience has been anything like mine and nearly all they ever see are Weedel and Pidgeys and Ratatas.

I love my 3DS and all the other handheld consoles I've owned but my phone has the advantage of being always with me. A game that sort of needs to be with you all the time is "Animal Crossing" because a day there matches a day in real time. I want to see Animal Crossing come to iOS and Android. I would like to see that game written fresh just for the smart phone rather than a port.

It would be cool if it could tie in to your calendar and if there was a meeting on your calendar or a doctors appointment your character in animal crossing could go to a meeting or appointment with some of the animals (at a different time you can set in the game).

I will buy this just to support pay-once games. I hate Mario and all such games... totally boring for me.

What I hate more though is IAPs and any sort of pay to advance games. I will support anything that is not.

1. I just want Goldeneye 64 on my phone

Not happening, the rights to it are split between too many companies to ever agree on a re-release.

And the rights to the actual gamecode and design are with Rare/Microsoft, not Nintendo, but Nintendo have enough to have blocked a 360 re-release that was made.
