i live in the uk
and if i dont get a parcel every day from ups dhl or our equivilent of usps
that isnt for me then its a good day
i have never kept someone elses parcel
i even drove all the way to scottland to give someone their parcel back
god knows how it ended up 250 miles in the wrong direction but still
i like the feeling i get when the people are like oh thanks,
or oh i thought that got lost in the post anyway the company sent me out a new one so you can have that on
i got my xbox 360 because i delivered it to the guy and he had thought it was lost in the post (i delivered it 40 minutes after i got it) he had already been to buy one so he gave me it for nothing

I think we all have some threshold, that when crossed we become dishonest. I consider myself honest, but if someone accidentally delivered $100,000.00 to my house, I would keep it. This person clearly had a lower threshold than I, as I'm sure that I have a lower threshold than others.

Just think of the whole thing as paying $400 for a class called "attention to detail 101"

IMO, it depends on whether the thing being delivered is addressed or not. In the case of a FedEx or UPS package, the addressee and other identifying information are usually clear, and a phone call is all it takes to get the package on its way.

On the other hand, if something shows up and there's no indication of where it was supposed to be (say, someone leaves an envelope with cash taped to my door), the concept of threshold comes in. For $10 or $20, I wouldn't make much effort, but for a considerable sum (such as the $100,000 you cite) I would make a good-faith effort to find the rightful recipient.

Haha hey man your dad just called the number 1 talk show here in Orlando. He described exactly what happened to you right down to the address. He was pretty funny, the hosts gave the same advice you got here. One said you should be able to get a phone number from the guys address. Call the person who has your phone and ask what's up. One host said it was your fault for screwing up the address. Haha it was weird hearing a forum member's dad on the radio though

*update*

Today we finally got through to the Local NYC precinct that is in that neighborhood. My father made friends with the dispatch girl, and she was able to get a community officer out there to that address.
I was thinking my options were going away and I felt like just writing this off as a loss and a lesson. But the NY Police are giving me a chance.

i was thinking of hiring a private investigator or a contingency based lawyer to pursue this case. At the same time, i didn't know if the PI would have cost me more than the Iphone is worth, but at this point i don't care about the money anymore. I just want that Iphone so he doesn't get away with this.
Updates coming in the next few days!!!

Oh, great! I was just going to ask if you had gotten ahold of the POPO... Nice. Good luck! And a PI will likely cost you more than the value of the iPhone. I'm not at all familiar with how it works, but looking into reporting a stolen iPhone and having AT&T blacklist the serial number? Could give it a try...? Correct me if I am wrong! Again, good luck and keep us up to date...

Wow

I am surprised to read this in Macrumors before my Dad was able to get in touch with me. I have to call him up and get the scoop. But i must agree with you, he is a very funny guy!!

When was the last time you been to Harlem? Even some of your people live there now. Real estate and location ( value). When you make comments like that, please have the facts correct.

Near Bill Clinton's office, if you are the wrong skin color (i.e. white), you might even get harassed by women. I saw it happen once in the middle of the day.

If it's reasonable, absolutely. If I found someone's driver's license on the ground I'd throw it in an envelope and mail it to them. Or finding someone's cell phone and calling home or ice and figuring out how to get it back to them.

I don't understand why the concept of helping people who need it has become so foreign to us. I'm not saying that this is your standpoint, I'm speaking generally.

Yes, people with morale would write: WRONG ADDRESS and put it in the mail box, or take 1 minute to call the delivery company.

I hope that everything works out for you, that being said a lesson learned for everyone, DOUBLE CHECK addresses.

Not taking anything from the OP, but whats with the comments about Harlem?
Just to let some of these ignorant people know that Harlem has been bombarded with "races" other than what your expecting in Harlem. That package could've been sent anywhere in any town and the same results would have occured. Damn, people these days.. OP, I hope you get out of this ok!!!

Heartily agreed. The unchecked thinly veiled racist and homophobic comments on this board is disturbing.

To the OP, I have not read the entire thread, but I hope that your predicament is favorably resolved.

Jude

Just curious... What incentive is there for someone to use their correct name when they sign for a package? It's the honest thing to do, of course, but I wonder if some people routinely sign the wrong name so they can later claim that they didn't get a package, if that turns out to be to their benefit. Is there any downside to mis-signing?

Maybe delivery people should take a photo of the person who signs, get a thumbprint, and also a DNA sample!

wish you the best

I hope you get your iPhone back, its pisses me off how are society has changed.
I live in Connecticut where supposedly its one of the most welcoming states, but if I weren't mistaken, I would say the same thing would happen here.

It's a shame and I hope it all goes well.:)
Get back to us if the POPO did actually do anything lol.

UPDATE: Refunded the original buyer via paypal, and then waited for an answer from the Detective at the 25th precinct in NYC. In order for the Police to open an investigation into the case, we have to file a report of the incident with fedex and a complaint from myself. Right now I am just waiting for Fedex to complete a report saying delivery was made to the address, and then I will be able to start the process of filing charges if the package is not accounted for.
I will let everyone know what happens eventually, but it may be a few weeks or so. Thanks for everyones input...

To the OP, I hope you get your phone back with a minimum of $$$.

Just for the sake of conversation, I would be interested hearing the opinion of anyone in law enforcement or an attorney on this issue of receiving something mailed in error. We all know what the right thing to do is, but what are the legal requirements for that state?

Apologies if this has been covered. I did not read the entire thread.

Which show?
Monsters
Shannon
or Jim Philips
My money is on Jim Philips :D

I don't know if this is the same in the US as it is here in the UK but if something is delivered to your address that you didn't order, by law you are allowed to keep it and nothing will come of it. Not common knowledge but worth knowing!

Only if it is addressed to you, IIRC.

If it is addressed to someone else, you are to write on the package that it is delivered in error.
