Oh FFS. The last 6 months have been...

“ERMAGRRRRRD SHIPPING DATES SLIPPED NEW IMAC COMING”

“WWDC IMAC COMING”

“AAAAAAARMMMMMM IMAC RAWR”

::Insert inaccurate Jon Prosser tweet here::

“SHIPPING DATES SLIP AGAIN IMAC IMMINENT BUT DON’T BUY NEW ONE COMING LATER SO DONT UPDATE ARMMMMMM”

Ad nauseam.

So over it at this point. I’m probably just going to go Windows... Lol actually no. I’ll just complain, but then rejoice in excitement whenever Apple ends the cockblock of the century and releases a redesigned iMac.

The wait for the 2020 iMac is still nothing compared to the wait for the 2018 Mac mini and the 2019 Mac Pro.

Not happening. Also, why not wait a little longer? Buying outdated tech for today's prices is not really the best, is it?

Intel-based iMac are hard working beasts and if you need it now, all the future tech in the world is worthless. Besides, 10th Gen Core i-Series is just not that big of an upgrade. The GPU update is of more consequence if they are able to move to Navi, even though it will be RDNA1 in this update.

Why does everyone jump to the ARM conclusion? Apple has already said more Intel macs on the way, there was already a rumored Intel update to the iMac, and we just saw benchmark numbers for a new iMac two days ago. Seems obvious its an Intel Comet Lake iMac
It is...too much wishful thinking right now, I’m afraid. Comet Lake iMac incoming. Also I wonder if we’ll get a Rocket Lake 27” model right before the full switch as a bon voyage? Seems possible.

I would expect Comet Lake S iMacs with custom 95 Watt Intel CPUs in the existing design in July 2020, and then ARM iMacs with new form factor (24” and 29”?) in Q4.

If I were buying an iMac in 2020 on a 3-year upgrade cycle (ie. with Apple Care) and/or I had mission critical 3rd party software, I’d buy Intel. OTOH, if I were a consumer with that keeps my computers longer term and I were more flexible with my software needs, and didn’t need a computer immediately, I’d wait for ARM.

I would be surprised if Apple didn’t offer some kind of Intel Mac options after the two years. I can’t see ARM taking the place of the Xeon that’s in the Mac Pro that soon, I could be wrong. The benefit of current Intel hardware is obviously BootCamp, when Apple decides to stop supporting OS updates on ARM Macs that will be it. With an Intel Mac you still have the option to run Windows or Linux.

Can anyone suggest a cheap used iMac for Logic Pro X & FCPX that would run similar to this Mac Pro please? To tie me over until this new landscape is clearer. It just needs to run Mojave.

I see that some other computers have also shipping times pushed back.
Only the Mac mini and the 16 in MacBook Pro have very quick shipping times (at least here in the US store)
Also you can get the iMac 27 with vesa mount sooner as in august.

The iPad Pro is in mid August for me now. This is clearly COVID related. Not saying there will not be a new iMac soon, but I don't think its related at this point. Some iPhones are taking some time to ship as well for my location.

I'd been holding out for as long as possible, anticipating a redesign in March or at WWDC, but my 2011 iMac started failing in December. So I caved and bought a 2019.

I opted for a 1TB SSD and 32GB of RAM. And god, it was not worth the over $2k. The 5K screen is awesome but everything aside from that just feels exactly the same. The performance is really, really disappointing. It stutters under my graphic design and music production workload. It is not smooth.

This is not a fun waiting game... anyone who needs an iMac is getting "DON'T BUY" screamed in their ears but with no real end in sight.

Yep. Did you get the i9? I guess this is why Apple has gotten frustrated with Intel. Even my 2010 Mac Pro, in some cases like when I don't need to produce HEVC videos, is just as fast as my i9 iMac.

I stuck with the 3 GHz i5, since I figured multitasking was more important to my flow than actual processing. In hindsight I should have upgraded to an i7, but I had a budget :(

I've got three that are due to be delivered today that were ordered on June 8th. Fingers crossed that they arrive with a silently updated config with a i9-10910 and a Navi GPU.
Although unlikely, do let us know what happens! I was on the exact same bandwagon about 3 weeks and a half ago, where I just decided to cancel a still unshipped/uncharged iMac order and went with the exact refurbished version that appeared.
I did “trigger” a return to buy more time at the end of the 15 days return window (they give you about an extra week to print a label and then send it back), but the deadline is tomorrow, so that’s it, I’m keeping mine.
Ultra happy about it though, it’s a great uncumbersome machine, plug one power cable and be done: no wires everywhere for keyboard, mouse or IR mouse receiver, camera, speakers, etc... connected two thunderbolt displays I had, same deal, daisy chain, no cables from the screens towards the desk.

They killed Mac OS X so who’s to say they won’t just kill the iMac as well. It’s one of two machines that didn’t get a name change after the Intel switch, maybe it’s time.

27" will be Intel, min spec machine will be $1999, and the overall spec will tell a lot about Apple's confidence in their own high end chip development.
The replacement for the 21" later this year will have only one processor option, and will be sold on new design as performance will be underwhelming.
Apple own applications and Adobe Suite will soon start to slow down on Intel.

I'd like some of your coolaid!

I would have thought that any 27 inch iMac from 2015 onwards (Retina 5k?) would give you that which you need. Make sure it has the SSD rather than For Fusion Sake drive.

But eBay prices on used seem pricey to me.

My iMac is dead, Jim, dead.

So...I'm stuck at the moment. Bar building a Hack'.

The new iMac seems imminent with Geek benches leaking and av' out to August for BTO.

Rock and a hard place.

If it helps. Apple have 24 months %0 finance at the moment. At least there wouldn't be an upfront cost....and you could spread the payments and put the chunk you would have payed used into reducing those payments.

I almost went for the 2019 last year. But I balked at the BTO prices. I didn't think the gpu options were strong enough.

With a possible 5700XT option this time, I expect that to change.

I think one of the things about AS silicon will be that the overall user experience and eg. Final Cut will be a lot smoother overall.

As Apple will be able to tune it's software for the co-processors in its AS chip.

I hope that we do see a redesigned iMac announced in September I‘ve been holding on to my late 2015 27in for a while upgrading the ram helped with Catalina but I would love an iPad Pro style redesign with an updated display and less bezel.

What cases? I have a 2010 Mac Pro 3.33GHz 6-core w/ GTX 680 and it is half the Mac the iMac is.

I'd expect it to sell about the same number of units, or even a bit higher, if there are enough people/businesses concerned about a specific app they use not making the transition to ARM native in a timely matter, if at all?

There will also be people who never buy the first version of any new product (1st model year cars, Macs, etc) and grab the last Intel iMac, in order to let other people perform the public beta test of the new ARM Macs?

Shrug?
