So they have clearly differentiated lines for people wanting new iPhones, and people who already have one reserved and people who are wanting to buy Macs? Again, serious question. I've never even been close to an Apple store on launch day. I just figured it was a humongous mess and you had to wait in a giant line even if you wanted to buy an Apple TV, for example haha

Yes, they have diff lines.

I had the same thoughts. While I wouldn't not buy a phone for a mere $100 extra cost, it does annoy me. The base model spec should have been bumped to 32 GB, avoiding the need for most of us to leap to 64 GB. It would have only cost Apple a couple of bucks per phone, but lost them quite a lot of money in missed upsell potential. I hope a price war does kick off with Android at some point the future. The higher capacity iPhones just carry a ridiculous profit premium, especially now with the 6+.

Maybe eventually, but this is the first year of a "big" iPhone and with the pent up demand and likely tight supply Apple has a lot of pricing power. The S5 hasn't exactly sold well, and the Note 4 is still "coming soon." Even if the 6 Plus takes a few weeks to become more prevalent, it will be "here" with demo units in stores, which puts even more pressure on Samsung.

----------

Any bets on the probability of sleeping in on the 19th, driving to Starbucks, spending 25 minutes there sipping a coffee, then casually walking over to the Apple Store and strolling in to say "Heyy I want an iPhone 6 64GB" and having them say "coming right up" instead of laughing at you? :)

I wonder.

--He Who Won't Wait In Lines

My guess is that this year there will be more in stores. They had enough to do presales. The last 2 years I stopped by Apple Stores on the Saturday afternoon of launch weekend and happened to be there just as they opened up new shipments. This year I preordered.

Welcome to the Macrumors community. If anyone other than Apple releases it first, then it's a bad idea IE. 5.5" iphone, mini ipad, etc...

It's how it works around here.

You both need to lookup the definition of "hypocrite". Being wrong about the popularity of a particular phone model just makes you wrong.

I personally know several people that are buying a 64GB this time around that currently have a 16GB iPhone, so it's very clever on Apple's part for their bottom line obviously.

Yes, and I am one of them. It is very clever, but it's also somewhat devious. They set up a situation where the base model clearly has too little storage for most people, and you can only quadruple it for $100.

I don't think they'll ever go to 32/64/128. The 32GB bump just isn't worth $100 anymore. It'll probably stay the same next year (16/64/128), and then perhaps just go 32/128 in two years time, with a possible 256 GB option at some point down the road.

----------

The iPhone6Plus is better, but still this upgrade shouldn't be needed for anyone that has a 5S unless you want bigger screen and the plus if you want more battery life or pay w your phone...

The bigger screen on the 4.7" alone is absolutely worth the upgrade. Lets face it, no one really "needs" an iPhone, especially a newer one. Yet I have money, and I have to spend it on something. Dropping around $250 (after resale of 5s) for a new iPhone 6 is a paltry investment compared to how much use I get out of the thing.

Totally Agree. Small amount of money for the amount of time/use for a power user

Exactly. And one year warranty is just intolerable.

You lucky bastards buying it for 199+ USD I'll be spending 699 or 799 €

That's $199 US plus a 24 month contract. And I don't know prices elsewhere in the EU, but phone contracts are the one thing that is an awful lot cheaper in the UK than in the USA.

I think Apple really ramped it up this year thinking there would be enough, and there still weren't.

And I think they really underestimated the demand of the 6+, from a poll I saw, it seems to be about 50/50 on 6 vs 6+...I'm betting Apple figured it wouldn't be anywhere near that even.

I think all the reports of issues with the 6+ were true. They just can't make enough. They definitely knew it would be popular, the keynote seemed to focus on it and really present it as the flagship.

Idk why everyones making a big deal about one handed usability. 90% of the time I'm using my iPhone 5 with both hands. I hate texting with my one thumb, it takes forever, and its just more comfortable to use both hands in general. But then again, I'm NEVER holding anything else so I'm kind of biased I guess.

Apple Watch

After watching a few videos of pocket tests for the 5.5" and 4.7", I've ultimately decided to go with the 4.7". I would certainly prefer the larger screen, but I don't want the disadvantage of more limited mobility. There's not only the question of comfortably fitting it in your pocket (I'm a shorter, thinner guy), but also of using an armband while running or biking. Add to that the delay in obtaining the phone, and the extra $100 cost, and it just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for me. I figure the 4.7 will make for a smoother transition, and I can always upgrade to the 6s+ next year. Just some thoughts for you guys debating the size choices.

Reading what you were saying about the armband while running or biking, first thing that came to mind was Apple Watch.:apple:
You could stow the iPhone away in a pack or pouch being that its tethered in some ways to the watch, but at least not have to armband an entire phone when you have the Apple Watch on your wrist.

I let Siri type my texts for me. :)

For those complaining that their AT&T orders are delayed, here is one reason it may. They hold back a lot of stock for their premier business customers. For example, my premier agent for my company ordered a 16GB SG 6+ and a 16GB Gld 6 at 11:00a Friday and had no issues getting a delivery confirmation for the 19th. Luckily, I get one.

My experience has always been the opposite. I'm a premier business customer and have always ordered within minutes of preorders being available and have always been way down in the delivery line. I ordered a 6+ gold 128 when the ATT site went live 4 minutes BEFORE the official time and initially got a ship date of 14 to 21 days. Later in the morning, it had slipped to Oct 13-22.

I thought about that, but it doesn't really solve the running question. Biking, sure, I'll wear a backpack of some kind. But running? Maybe strap it on my waist somehow, I don't know. The watch honestly doesn't seem to add that much capability also. If I'm carrying the phone anyway, I can just Bluetooth music to wireless headphones and have Map My Run running in the background. The watch wouldn't do much other than give me a screen to glance at every now and then.

Lol, I've noticed this as well!
My understanding is that as they flood the shipping lines w/ iPhones, which one is "yours" is dynamic... depending on the ebb & flow of supply.

That being said, this year is the 1st time I've seen one quite close to my current location marked as "held for future delivery".

It might even be at that location, but I remember seeing that happen with the original iPad and then it jumped around to other locations. I believe what happens is the shipments made from China are laded through the main FedEx logistics center at Memphis (not Raleigh, as I said before) for customs purposes, but that isn't necessarily where the airplanes are landing and offloading. A mysterious system. All I know is the chances of it showing up at your door on the appointed day are close to 100%.

still over here just chillin' with my 5S which surprisingly is almost identical under the hood to the 6...hmmm...

I have a 5s as well, and sure, it is almost exactly the same as the iPhone 6 except for screen size, A8, M8, NFC, more storage on mid and high end models, higher contrast screen with greater viewing angle, updated 4G LTE, updated WiFi, updated camera and FaceTime camera... But otherwise, the exact same phone.

I do not regret replacing my iPhone 4 with a 5s as it was time. I do have some twinges of iPhone envy, though.

Okay. Thanks. I had checked out the "unlocked" T-Mobile version but there's an implication it would be locked to T-Mobile for the first 45 days.

I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this yet, but you can order the iPhone through att directly using their att next payment plan program, and simply pay the phone off in full when it arrives. I ordered two like that yesterday. When they arrive, I'll pay them off in full, then move them to att go phone plans. No contracts, no subsidies.

Most say the full priced no contract T-Mobile iPhone is in fact unlocked. Apple just does not publicize that fact.

There's a little more to it than that, such as the new Retina HD displays supposedly being nicer and with a wider viewing angle, the VoLTE capability and the camera improvements especially in regard to shooting video among a few other enhancements. The Apple Pay (NFC) capability alone was enough for me, but I work in the debit/credit card industry with that kind of stuff every day.

The real improvement in screen is really on the plus and a 4" like the 5S wouldn't be able to discern that much a difference at reading distance. Volte is only w tmobile and NFC is just a gimmick for when you don't have your stuff as it stands today just look at how NFC in android has run. Better camera is really not an amazing upgrade by itself either even w the optical in 6plus vs others in the competition. IMO if you are w an iPhone 5 or below this is a great upgrade, but for the 5S is just a meh update that many can skip.

What was it like last year getting a 5s without a preorder or a late preorder. Like… past October?

I am waiting to preorder with T-Mobile on the 17th, so I can take advantage of them price matching AT&T's $200 trade in value on the iPhone 4. I waited 4 years for a new phone, I can wait a few more weeks, but like to know what I can expect.

I do think that this is more about constrained supply than demand.

But I did buy one.

I do too. I think Apple underestimated the popularity of the +. I did too. I ordered the 6. Then I talked to everyone I know and they all ordered the +. I'm sticking with the 6 but I was surpassed that so many people wanted the +. I think Apple was too.

What is it about that word "slipping"? It's used on every article about this delay
Is it a standard english way to say "delayed"

Still laughing at all those people saying the 5.5" would never sell and who wants a phablet, blah blah blah. Well, look for yourselves...

By the way, the iPhone 6+ holds some of the original Galaxy Note design.

Look at that "rounded everything" feel.

----------

If they are Android converts, all the better. I won't buy a 5.5" phone but if someone wants to contribute to my next dividend check, so be it.

I really don't like these Android phones with big a big screen, but I can accept the idea if it comes with a Wacom pen. Sadly, the iPhone 6+ doesn't come with any accessory that justifies the big screen. It could come with some kind of a never-seen-before haptic feedback -- at least.

Nobody in my house is 'eligible to upgrade' yet. I have to wait for 2015, and my wife has to wait for October. She's hoping supplies are back up by her order.

Out of all the 5-5.5 inch android phones selling since last year (S4,5,HTC One, M8,LG G2, G3, Nexus 5 and more) what percentage actually have a stylus? What percentage of the 5+ inch phone market does the Note series command?Whatever that number is, expect it to alter significantly after we have a couple of quarters of 6 Plus sales.. If a stylus is the absolute essential experience for a large screen phone why is Samsung not incorporating on other phones in the 5.2 - 6 inch range?
