Current iteration is mid-cycle, check the Buyer's Guide tab at the top of this page. Since it seems that they've gotten their footing with it again (fixing the screen issues as well as shipping problems) you could get the iMac now and get the iPad when it comes out, have a bit of space between those purchases.

I'm aware of the buyer's guide. I thought I had heard a rumor on some site about updated iMacs in March. Doubt I'll buy now anyway. Need some time to think about it and sell off my old equipment. I'd prefer 27", but don't think my desk is big enough. My 26" monitor right now takes up way too much space, which is why I'd like something a little smaller. Yes, smaller! Or maybe a bigger desk. I might as well wait the 3 months or so until they are refreshed and hope for cheaper quad-core models.

Another deal breaker is the line-in video. The 22" model doesn't have it while the 27" does. I play xBox Live in the study at my desk (so I don't annoy the wife) and I'd need to be able to hook it up using one of those new display port adapters. HDMI would be even better, per the rumor from the other day. And yes, it is possible to game on IPS. Some of the new panels are a bit faster--not sure about the iMac, but mine is fine.

In addition, the 27" iMacs hit the refurb section of the store for the first time yesterday.

The 3.06ghz 27" has been in the refurb store on and off for atleast a month. They usually don't last long. Waiting for i5s to show up!

Hmmm should I or Should I not buy one?

Do you or Do you not want one? :D

Seriously, do you or do you not want 3x the performance of a 2.4 C2D iMac? If ya got the $...

Lovin' my i7! (Only missing eSATA - next time, Apple! I don't like cutting holes in the back of my iMac...)

And Aperture 3.0.1 running great on it (but I still backup the library folder some nights after doing lots of faces or brushes...)

Looking to buy my mother a Mac, her old HP PC is a piece of crap. Maybe it's finally safe to actually buy one of these monsters now. :apple:

Can you really conclude from shipping times that Apple has fixed the flickering and tinting problems?

Apple finally acknowledged the tinting problem just last week. Maybe the shipping time is just a supply thing not at all connected to the problems.

My i7 27" received November 13th has been luckily free from either problem - and I'm an obsessive stickler when it comes to displays. Either way, it's probably safe to buy now.

And yes, it is possible to game on IPS. Some of the new panels are a bit faster--not sure about the iMac, but mine is fine.

It's possible to game on anything. I game on an older Samsung 21.3" with a PVA panel. The refresh is dreadful, but unless you're a tweaker it won't throw your game off enough to matter.

best buy?

If I buy one from Best Buy right now ... will it be these latest ones with no yellow tint and issues? I want to do the 18 month no interest deal ...

Good to hear. Earlier today I cancelled my order at a reseller after reading more about the online store delivering in 2 weeks while the reseller would take at least 3-4 weeks. Maybe European shipping will be faster too soon. I just hope that Apple decides to restock resellers so they don't lose customers.

No indication that anything was done to fix the 21" model...?

Once again, no mention anywhere by Apple about fixes to the 21" model and their yellow screen issues. I don't want, need, have space for a 27"--how about fixing the giving press on the 21" too!!! I hate to be cynical about it but I feel Apple treats the people who buy the 21" as less valuable ($$$ here) and assumes they are less discerning. It may be true that parts of the "lower" end may be less discerning but that is no excuse to sell a questionable product, stay quite about it, and continue to advetise it as the "ultimate display."

I never thought I would say this after years of Apple, but, I think I am going to start looking at PCs again. I REALLY need a new computer and just cannot wait any longer. I already held out two years for the perfect time to buy only to be crushed by yellow and noisy screens, several returns, and, no comment by Apple.

you better hope they really did figure out the issues and fixed them all. Or you could end up with a lemon that was refurbished into another lemon

There's no real way of knowing. A lot will depend on how long your local store has been sitting on machines.

That said, of the small percent of machines that had either problem and even smaller perfect that had both, the majority of reports are that the machines were online orders, typically customized. So the delivery abuse could be a factor. Knock it around enough and the frame for the LCD could come loose or break and the crystal could be damaged. Which could be why AppleCare advised me to take my shops one damaged machine into a store for display replacement. No issues after that. It was a custom machine delivered by FedEx and not store bought (which are typically pallet wrapped and handled by folks that live and breathe by proper handling of products)

Regardless, make sure you ask in and out about returns, exchanges etc. Know what rights you have with purchase, what you'd have to pay for (I'm not sure Best Buy does anything free, including a diagnostic) and so on. And if you have an Apple store nearby you might want to have them do any service on it rather than Best Buy. They are less likely to give you any runaround and it will clue them in that the problems aren't fixed after all.

Once again, no mention anywhere by Apple about fixes to the 21" model and their yellow screen issues.

Out of some dozen sites I visit daily I saw a singular report of a 21.5" with a yellow screen. And the second one the poster got was perfect.

That said, don't you imagine that whatever was the trouble with the 27" would be the same trouble with the 21.5" Highly likely. So if one is fixed, both are. Assuming there was actually anything to fix in the smaller machine and that one computer wasn't a total fluke.

So if you want to go buy the computer, go buy it.

Wow, I may actually go the Apple Store route, or on-line instead... check it out:

Revision A's shipping again. Isn't it time for threads to start for Revision B by now.

At one point I believed the iMac would be updated in May 2010. Problems with iMacs driven by ATI graphics reinforced that belief thinking Steve Jobs would panic and demand a new iMac with nVidia graphics.

The timing also seemed reasonable. It would be 7 months after introduction of the current model, not conflict with the annual iPhone update in June and not occur during the "dead" period in July/August when Apple has education deals to rid themselves of old inventory. Waiting until September/October seemed unlikely because that would be a full year between updates and several other products (iPods, notebooks) are traditionally updated then.

I now believe that Apple has decided to limit all Mac desktop updates to just once per year and slow MacBook updates from every 6 months to just once every 9 months.

This change does fly in the face of Apple tradition, however. Apple likes their product introduction events to have narrow focus. They don't like introducing 4 different things at once because none of them gets as much attention that way.

The explanation I can come up with is that they no longer consider a new Mac introduction worthy of a media event unless multiple products are being updated. They've moved to milking the Mac for all it's worth while they move on to the next insanely great thing (hand held computing).

I'm on the fence

My options, after waiting since January 2009 to buy my first ever mac (the iMac) are:

1. Buy now using the education discount and get a free iPod touch.

Pros
- It's cheaper than full price (my student ID expires at the end of March)
- Free iPod touch
- I get it NOW and can throw my XP machine out the window

Cons
- Are the long list of issues REALLY rectified?
- A rev B release COULD be around the corner, with potential price drops

2. Wait until who knows when for the next revision and buy it at full price

Pros
- Issues are likely to be resolved
- May be new features
- May be price drops

Cons
- Could be waiting for ages
- Will have to pay full price
- May be a new set of issues
- Have to put up with my piece of crap XP machine until then (it's adequate for what I need but MAN do I want a change)

Have I forgotten anything that might impact my decision? If you take the price out of the equation (I'm in a position where it's not a HUGE deal), I have no idea what to do. Advice, anyone?

Just received a week 8 iMac 27". Still yellow and (not related) hard drive really slow. Compared against the original which we had kept until receipt of the new one and new one was over 50% slower.

Saying that Apple have been great but still issue. Have sent replacement back and kept original. Have offered £50 discount and have said they are now fixed but also said replacement received should have been fixed?

Have just checked comments from another thread an noted that its true that iMac cannot deal with with Jumbo packets on ethernet....Mac Book pro can as can Mac Pro...no wonder stuttering on streamed video.

Can this be sorted by firmware or is the iMac crippled by hardware?

Very good news. Does anyone know what the cause of the yellow cast was? Could it have been the backlight LEDs? I've seen high wattage, 5W in this case, white LEDs grow yellow in flashlights.

/k

I was told the problem was in the shipping. UPS has a tendency to "drop kick" boxes around. The 27's were shipped in their original boxes simply inserted into another cardboard shipping box. What would happen is that the LCD panel would be shifted and press against the screen and cause the "yellowing effect" This problem was addressed and these are on to buy right now.

I will be ordering an i7...

Uh, stuttering streaming video? I've never had that trouble. I had 2 iMac i7's. One of them had screen issues (not yellow), sent it back and now I have my new replacement. Both have no issues streaming HD video. You might want to check your router.
