hi guys, new to apple. so im going to order the iphone 13 pro max. I dont take much videos at all. so all this pro res talk really not for me i guess. but the question i have is there anything else the 128gb model of the iphone 13 leaves out? is them camera not as good as the 256 version? i do take pics alot..but not really video.

Hi Gotti, I suppose the only thing could be a different amount of RAM. The camera is the same. You won’t regret your choice, and it will have enough RAM for you. The price difference is not so much with the 256GB option as there is only another 128GB of storage, so I would encourage you to consider that and how it will improve the resale value for the future.

well. I keep wondering what my reaction will be once I try and download a ProRes Video file...

probably like this.

I think you nailed it. The codec doesn’t really matter, it’s the bit rate mostly, and the total available information. ProRes by itself doesn’t mean much, ProRes 4444 would, but you also don’t need that unless the iPhone suddenly has 17 stops available.
I’m thinking that there will be more than one format available, as they are talking about embedding a depth map inside the video, and I think that would require the kind of Prores capable of storing multiple channels, or at least an alpha channel. That will be a huge file!

Prores is an antiquated dinosaur. Hevc (H.265) is the future. There is no difference in video quality, but hevc is considerably smaller and easier to work with. Atomos just added h.265 to their ninja V because they see this as the future of film making. Don’t be fooled by Apple.
HEVC is not easier to work with, in fact its much harder because it's much more compressed. That's one of the main reasons people use ProRes, it's less compressed and therefore easier to work with. HEVC might be the eventual future but for the moment, professional filmmaking is entirely raw or ProRes.

I’m going to walk back the bit about old machines. It looks like ProRes can give old machines a new lease of life.
I note that there are other limitations around what old machines can do if they are not able to use later versions of Final Cut Pro or iMovie, such as potential limitations on Dolby Vision or other HDR formats.

That's true! Absolutely! But with miserable bitrates cellphone cameras deal with, outputed HEVC files and their editing is just fine on any modern machine. Let's wait and see what bitrate ProRes ends up being on the iPhone.

I liked this comment via Reddit:

"The Venn diagram between people who actually care about shooting ProRes on a damn phone and people who want to save money by buying the base model may as well be two circles in different rooms"

My friend told me about this last night, and I honestly thought he was messing with me. Damnit.

After launch, I spent a week and a half looking for an iPhone 13 Pro. Apple stores, ATT stores, Target… nothing. I thought I was going to have to buy a starlight 13 mini (love the size, but I LOVE my telephoto lens 5x as much, and the 120hz screen was the icing on the whatever you enjoy icing on).

But one lucky morning, I managed to find two 13 Pros at a Best Buy down the street from me; a graphite 128, and a silver 256.

I’ve always managed fine with 128GB —hell, my 11 Pro was only 64GB and I don’t remember ever running out of storage. So I traded in my old phone at the ATT store, then rushed over to Best Buy to get the graphite 13 Pro w/ 128GB.

This is upsetting, because I am a filmmaker and was pumped to try ProRes out. I would love to shoot ProRes in 4K. Damn. Had I known then what I know now…

Right now, a few weeks in, I’m using 66GB on my phone. How much free space do y’all have left on your 256GB? Just curious.

I’m also questioning why I pay for 2TB of iCloud storage if it can’t be used for stuff like this.

It’s not like I would be doing any serious editing on my phone — whatever ProRes footage I shot would immediately be transferred to my M1 12.9 iPad Pro or Mac, both with more than enough storage to handle it.

So, yeah. I understand the limitations of shooting footage with huge file sizes on a 128GB phone. I just wish I would have known about the limitations when I was buying the phone. I’m not on MR everyday, so I missed the warning.

And what about the budding filmmakers who don’t frequent tech sites? They’re going to be in for a rude awakening, lol.

Apologies ahead of time for this all over the place rant. Wish you all the best?

How did a few weeks go by when you were so pumped / love to shoot in ProRes in 4K?
