"The Venn diagram between people who actually care about shooting ProRes on a damn phone and people who want to save money by buying the base model may as well be two circles in different rooms"
My friend told me about this last night, and I honestly thought he was messing with me. Damnit.
After launch, I spent a week and a half looking for an iPhone 13 Pro. Apple stores, ATT stores, Target… nothing. I thought I was going to have to buy a starlight 13 mini (love the size, but I LOVE my telephoto lens 5x as much, and the 120hz screen was the icing on the whatever you enjoy icing on).
But one lucky morning, I managed to find two 13 Pros at a Best Buy down the street from me; a graphite 128, and a silver 256.
I’ve always managed fine with 128GB —hell, my 11 Pro was only 64GB and I don’t remember ever running out of storage. So I traded in my old phone at the ATT store, then rushed over to Best Buy to get the graphite 13 Pro w/ 128GB.
This is upsetting, because I am a filmmaker and was pumped to try ProRes out. I would love to shoot ProRes in 4K. Damn. Had I known then what I know now…
Right now, a few weeks in, I’m using 66GB on my phone. How much free space do y’all have left on your 256GB? Just curious.
I’m also questioning why I pay for 2TB of iCloud storage if it can’t be used for stuff like this.
It’s not like I would be doing any serious editing on my phone — whatever ProRes footage I shot would immediately be transferred to my M1 12.9 iPad Pro or Mac, both with more than enough storage to handle it.
So, yeah. I understand the limitations of shooting footage with huge file sizes on a 128GB phone. I just wish I would have known about the limitations when I was buying the phone. I’m not on MR everyday, so I missed the warning.
And what about the budding filmmakers who don’t frequent tech sites? They’re going to be in for a rude awakening, lol.
Apologies ahead of time for this all over the place rant. Wish you all the best?
