the iPhone 4 meets the minimum requirements for iOS 7. It may not run as fast and smooth as the iPhone 5

stop right there. Now you're telling people to give up a better phone experience for a slower experience just because apple says that's the way they want things? As if the customer doesn't have the right to choose the better of the two? That's ridiculous.

Interestingly my iPhone 5 downloaded it automatically and popped up a message telling me to install it. My girlfriend has a 4S and it hasn't done that yet, even though she has space. Someone else I know at work has the 4, and hasn't been alerted yet. So I think folks on older devices have to be proactive about getting it, could be wrong though.

In hindsight they may left the return window open a bit longer, but they would never go back now after the fact. Can you imagine the mainstream press Field Day if they were to do that.

Let's say Apple does allow you to downgrade, most likely they will stop providing support for iOS 6. It doesn't make sense to support iOS 6 when going forward it's going to be iOS 7 on every Apple device.

This whole iOS 7 transition is making me nostalgic for the Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X transition. The SAME arguments were made about OS X's new colorful interface and issues on older hardware. People enraged! It was going to be the end of Apple! Same thing happened when ADB and SCSI was pushed out in favor of USB. When CD/DVD drives were dropped.

If you aren't aware, Apple's whole MO is to push the envelop on technology and software. They do not believe in backwards compatibility beyond a reasonable point, or at all. Just like with all the other things Apple shucked off, iOS 7 is going to cause the whole UI design industry to rethink the human/computer interface. This is a good thing.

So stop the whining. Apple will never, ever, let people go back. After a while, you'll understand why. It gets better.

That's socially irresponsible.

You may want to write a letter to Apple then. It was THEIR call to make the update available on the iPhone 4.

P.S. all 4 users thanked me for helping them update and their phones are working just fine.

go bark up another tree.

No it's not. Apple is pushing forward with the future and it doesn't want the same disastrous fragmented ecosystem that is killing Android.

What if your phone simply can't handle the new ios?

Buy a new iPhone if you want the best possible iOS 7 experience.

If I had an iphone 4 and I didn't like the way my phone handled it, I'd be really mad that apple doesn't allow me to switch back.

You might be mad but Apple wants as many people as possible on iOS 7 so developers are encouraged to abandon older versions of iOS that much sooner, and so they can take full advantage of the latest and greatest technologies available to them.

I'm not sure why any user would oppose downgrading. Even if it does make more sense from a business stand point what different does that make to a mere user? Anyway, my view is that they should allow downgrading for two reasons... 1) Nobody would want to downgrade if their latest iOS was a good update. 2) Lets be honest, even if they did allow people to downgrade, the amount of people who actually did it would be so small that it wouldn't effect anything.

No, I think it should not.

Apple should have an option on the software update settings to discard the update with "No thanks" or "Remind me Later" so the user don't have to constantly see the red badge.

If a user is interested on updating, should learn a bit more about the update rather then rushing on the very first second of the update going live and crashing Apple's server.

Seems like mine works at least as well on 7 as it did on 6. Really enjoy using it, too. :) Sorry you hate it. Give it some more time maybe? :(

EDIT: One thing that is definitely a lot less smooth is the UIPicker though...

What's really slow are the animations on the iPhone 4, which I and many others find irritating. Compared with my iPad 2, it takes much longer to go back to the home screen, for instance. The most elegant way to do it would be for Apple to allow us to turn off the useless animations completely. The performance would probably then be acceptable on the iPhone 4.

Should Apple allow users to downgrade to ios 6?

my mom's iPhone 3GS is running iOS 6 just fine.

What does your how your mom's iPhone 3GS runs on iOS 6 have to do with my statement regarding the iPhone 3G (notice no "S") and iOS 4?

Since this is a scientific poll, looks like we are neck and neck yes to no. Therefore, Apple should read this thread and take immediate action or risk alienating 50% of their customers!

Lol, there is hundreds millions of iOS users and you state that half of them want go back to iOS6 based on this poll? Or it was sarcasm? :)

I have used iOS 7 on an iPhone 4, iPad 2 and later devices.

As a comparison iOS 6 no the 3gs is more satisfactory than iOS 7 on the iPhone 4. However when I turn on the Reduce Motion or whatever it is setting on iOS 7, the iPhone 4 responds better.

And this

I smell a class action coming on that Apple cannot win. While I like 7 'ok', I still can't get my head around the notion that unlike any other electronic device, there is no reverting back to factory (or original purchase) state.

There is a host of reasons a customer would want or need to go backward, even if only temporarily. I don't believe Apple has a legal leg to stand on in refusing to revert a device back to its orginal state.

Flame away, and remember, I'm ok with 7 with no real need to go back.

Quaint notion of ownership? Really?

now that I think about it; :apple: makes money off of this "forced" ios 7. If you have an ipad 2 and ios 7 is choppy on it and you can't go back, consumer thinks he/she needs a better ipad. Cha-ching, :apple: collects another $800

You are wrong..

It won't go Cha-ching at Apple's counter.. if consumer feels he/she is cheated because of forced upgrade, its very likely it may Cha-ching for some other company - not Apple.

So it is not in Apple's interest to force upgrades on phone's which can't handle it….
