Hi everyone for christmas this year i bought myself my first ever MacBook Pro. I love it and I'm happy, but I just found out they dropped a new line. The one I have is 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 15''. My buddy just got the new one and keeps talking trash about how his new one is SO much better than mine.

I know technology is always getting better but damn just a couple months after this big purchase. Should I be pissed? Is the new one so much better than mine. By the way I only use my computer for poker, surfing, etc. I don't use sophisticated programs and I'm not involved in crazy media productions and all the other high tech stuff. Either is my friend. Someone please tell me something to say to my buddy to have him stop heckling me saying his is sooooooo much better.

Thanks

welcome to the computer industry. there's always a new model just around the corner. and as soon as its released, people start talking about when the next one is coming out. what to say to your buddy? tell him to take his dick measuring contest somewhere else.

well in all honesty if you just now realized that they released new ones 4 weeks ago, then you shouldn't be mad :). You shouldn't be mad because you did what smart people do; buy a machine when YOU NEEDED it. If you keep waiting for the latest and greatest, you will never have a machine.

Well, in all honesty, if you are mad, you should only be mad at yourself. Like some of the previous posters have commented, if you needed it a few months ago, then great, be happy with it. If you didn't, then be upset with yourself and not with your "friend", because you should have known that the MBP was due for an upgrade sometime in the near future.

I have to agree with the sentiment of many, in that he doesn't seem like much of a buddy.

As far as owning the latest and greatest MACBOOK PRO, that can often times become a "Rat Race" where you are left chasing your tail and stuck in a vicious cycle of debt, resulting in higher interest rates etc…

If you can afford a $3,000.00 laptop each year by all means then you should go for it… If not just slow down and enjoy your MACBOOK PRO because they are ALL awesome and work as designed.

 :apple:

Wow I'm surprised this thread is still getting hits. Most of you're comments were much appreciated. Some of you're comments were just as stupid as my friends. No I'm not 10 and when I asked if I should be mad I was referring to the computer I own and not having the newest one. NOT that my friend keeps busting my chops(even though that is really pissing me off bad)

Little update i went to my buddies house and some other people were there and he immediately mentioned how he has the new computer and how outdated mine is. Then he asked me "Hey how do I get the trackpad to act like right click button on the mouse for a PC. I told him to go **** himself that I cant help him since my computer is such an antique and his is so cutting edge.

FYI to whoever said I should have waited blah blah blah, I would have if I known a new model was coming out. I even asked the apple workers if a new one was coming out and they told me not until July.

Thanks again for all the nice people on this forum.

For next time (which may be years from now), you can check here at MacRumors. Apple employees will never tell you whether, or if there is going to be an update. (Or if they do don't trust them.)

No-one knows fore SURE, but there are signs, and new processors that become ready, and average periods of time between updates. Macrumors talks about them on the front page, and in the upper right you can see a tab called "Buyer's Guide." That gives some hint as to when a product is nearing the end of a typical cycle.

In the case of this update, "everyone" knew that a new processor was coming (Sandy Bridge), and it had been awhile since an update, so people were fairly sure there would be an MBP update early this year.

Now, all that said, I have a "2010" MBP that I bought not very long before the update. Why? I needed one then, and just because of how certain things worked out with my old computer that died/the replacement/etc. it was either buy one then and start using it, or hang on with my old Macbook. I bought one then - even thought I knew the update was coming - and I like it. I'm waiting for the *next* update when they get rid of this old, out-of-date unibody ;)

(Also, I'm not one for adopting a new model when it first comes out. I just like to wait until at least the second version; tell your friend to have fun being a beta tester ;))

Enjoy your MBP :)

Just do your research next time and you'll have more friends. On another note, I seriously doubt your "story").

1. You can use CUDA while he can't.
2. You can do heavy work without draining the battery.
3. Your GPU is faster except if he got the high end 15" or 17".
4. Your MBP is more quiet.

Seriously, you won't notice any difference between the 2010 and 2011 for the stuff that you do. It's only for very demanding tasks like video encoding where you'll see the differences. And ofcourse you'll see better numbers in benchmarks, that's it.

I think it's insecurity that he keeps bragging about it. Personally, I'd just ignore the bragging, but these are some points that you say to him. ( my advice is just to ignore it )

for the record, don't get pissed at him and tell him to go FU€K himself.

just smile and ask if his mom is able to walk again after last night, then continue on with your conversation :)

Yes you should be mad. He paid the same as you, got a newer, faster machine with Thunderbolt, improved wireless antennas, Sandy Bridge processors, better graphics chipset, more battery life....

But sure, be happy with your old one.

I, for one, am very happy with my older one. I'm sure the OP is as well.

Have you plugged anything into that Thunderbolt port yet there, chief?

Shouldn't you put "Thunderbolt" in your sig as well?
