I dont think any prosumer should buy a laptop in 2017 with less than 32 GB of RAM.
16GB is more than enough for everyday usage today, but assuming your machine is for the next 5 years, 32GB is future proof.
I'm holding on my next MacBook for hexacore yes, but also for 32GB.
I work on Sketch, Illustrator, Photoshop (not crazy design with thousands of vectors, app design actually), about 20 tabs open in Safari, WhatsApp web, Keynote.. and I reach 12 to 14gb of RAM.

While I wish they would go back to longer travel keys and such, I doubt that it is happening. I suspect Apple will make a few minor adjustments to improve the failure rate and call it a day.

I hope they improve the clicking sounds the keys make when typing. Can’t use it in meetings or quiet meeting environments.

Disagree. 8GB is where its at now for everyday usage. 16GB is for your tougher things and 32GB you must have 200 chrome tabs open or something.

Jony Ive said he is listening to all the complaints about the current model and he is gonna fix them. So, wait until 2018, which promises even more performance, better keyboard travel and possibly the return of a couple more practical ports like an SD Card reader and magsafe.

Well unless Apple come up with the equivalent of the iMac Pro for it's portable line, my money's on us being stuck with what Apple is currently producing. There will be spec bumps that's about it, the biggest indicator is sales. If you need more capable hardware in a portable form factor Apple is currently the wrong avenue to focus ones attentions...

Boy no kidding.

I'm amazed that some on the forum actually like the sound the new keyboards make.

To me it's not only loud, but the particular sound it makes is very annoying and generally unpleasant to have to listen to for any amount of time (there's one in the house so I "get" to hear it a lot)

I didn't wait and ordered my 2017 MBP middle model at BHAV for $300 off. So that was a great deal. I doubt Apple will do much improvement on it.

How can you disagree with the Activity Monitor showing "14GB"? I dont get it...
"you must have 200 Chrome tabs open" -> Yes ok, that's the issue with most of the people debating about the MBP, not everyone is buying this laptop for internet browsing you see... If your benchmark is to open 200 tabs on Chrome, yes of course, 16GB is fine for the next 10 years.
As I said I do relatively light work on Adobe tools+some other tools, as well as web browsing+some web based productivity tools (slack, dropbox, trello, etc). I'm reaching the limits, even though it's still manageable.
I can't imagine someone editing 4K, working on VR, etc etc

But is your RAM pressure high and do you have a high number of page-outs?

When I use Creative Cloud my 15” 2016 handles it pretty well, and I would guess the bottleneck is the GPU since it’s not what Premiere is optimized for. Premiere struggles a bit more than FCPX when I’m doing similar projects, but it’s still totally usable with 4K. But that is just my anecdotal experience.

I'm not sure why its showing 14GB only. I'm using a windows ultrabook with 8GB right now and its doing me fine. Even 4k is manageable. Many youtubers edit in final cut with the bmp.

Cos the OS is optimized to utilize all RAM when it's there.
That doesn't mean that u use it right now. What really makes a difference is when RAM pressure gets orange.

16GB will Be more than enough for 99%

The 32GB will of course be an upgrade, and 6-core the topend. So look to spend a lot of cash for the 2018 novelties.

Hi guys if need to get MacBook Pro 15" TB. Which is priority is Cpu(2.9 to 3.1) or Storage 512gb to 1tb? Main usage is Photoshop and Lightroom. FCPX and motion too.

For your usage, I'd prioritize getting the best GPU, and after that I'd get whatever storage you can afford with your budget (1TB is nice if you can get it, but 512GB are also fine, since if you work with lots of photos and videos you'll eventually have to resort to external drives anyway). The CPU bump is not worth it for most use cases and gives very little bang for the buck.

Most probably I will not wait for 6 core. I think will cost more.

You just know it is income tax time again lol.

Not this again. If you NEED one now, then get it. If you dont NEED one, then wait until 2018 because theyll probably be updated and better. Don't think there will be any major update for the 15" MBP, unlike 13" which may get quad core CPU. Thats it, nothing else.

Again, buy a desktop for power, and wait for the new Mac Pro. I went from a Kaby Lake to a Coffee Lake, in other words from 4 to 6 cores, and I can't really feel the difference. If you are dependent on raw power, you are more likely to go for Xeon CPU based computer than anything you can place on your lap.

If you can wait for the next model, you are not in need for the speed and shouldn't make the investment in the first place.

I am looking for a little input here (aren’t we all!): I am looking to replace my mid-2009 MacBook Pro that is finally showing its age (putting me in the “need a new computer now” category). I am obviously not a “power user”, but I wanna get a 2017 MBP 13” that may give me several years of use like my previous one did. My set-up would be 8GB (or 16GB, if recommended) RAM (double what my previous MBP had) with a 512GB SSD. Any opinions from y’all?

@uncleb67

16GB is a must if you intend to keep your MBP for that long. That is the one thing I wouldn't skip. And if you can, wait for quad core CPU in 13".

That’s what I kinda figured. Like I said, I’m no “power user”, but I do wanna kinda “future-proof” the machine. You gotta realize, I’m coming from a MBP that had 4GB RAM in 2009.
