if it were me i would go for a macbook and a 24"/mbp and 30" for work and a real pc gaming rig for play, but i guess a little late for that lol. A good pc gaming rig for about 1200 or so would destroy a 3k+ mac pro in gaming.

2 x 23" will always be better than 1 x 30".

Although 2 x 30" will be the best.

Here is an advice given by Chris Pirillo.

Very nice!! Yea I've seen some of chris's videos on other things but not this one. Thanks man.. I'm still wanting the 30" but I might keep my 23" to use with the 30" but it would be much cheaper to go with just another 23" since I already own the 23"... Just going to have to think about it when I'm at the apple store tomorrow.

I'll get another 23" if I'm you. Having 2 same-sized monitors side by side seems more "balanced" to me. lol. It is definitely aesthetically nicer.

One thing you need to remember is the colour on the new monitor, whichever you go for, will be brighter and more vibrant than your old 23". It may not be possible to calibrate both monitors to the same exact colour configuration. So this is something you should be aware of.

You know I've thought about the 2nd 23" ACD because I bought the 20" ACD to go with the current 23" and while the experience was good I thought it didnt look even.. maybe 2x 23" (with both being same monitors will be a much better experience?). I returned the 20" because it had a pinkish hue that was different than my current 23".

either way.. I think the 2x23" would be way overkill for me, I think 1 30" would be right for me and I'll be selling my current 23".

stop flaming the OP everyone, please. Thanks.

IMO 30" ACD is too expensive...wait for them to be updated at least or perhaps come down in price. When were these things last updated anyways? You're paying old prices for "old" technology.

When will there be an update on the ACD? Is there a certainty of a price drop? How long will you have to wait for that?

I believe the 30" ACD was introduced on June 2004 so its almost reaching that 4 year mark. But its gotten 1 minor bump in brightness and contrast ratio I believe. So its going about 4 years which I dont honestly think its really that old but I would love led on the 30" or even on the 23" as well..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Cinema_Display

I honestly think that there will be no upgrade for another 2 years at most since the led will cost a little too much for the 30".

I will still opt for the 30" and make my 23" my secondary monitor.

You know I'm actually thinking about keeping my 23" as well to use on the side next to the 30".. I guess I wont know unless I try it but if its way too overkill then I'll sell my 23" but if its nice I'll keep them both. After selling my 17" hi res 2.5ghz mbp model I'll still have about $1k left to put in the bank so not bad at all. :p

For the love o' Pete... whatever. Overkill? What's that? Someone could argue that one 17" is overkill. For what it's worth, I'm a dual monitor guy, be it 17's, 23's, 30's. Had I the resources (and the space) I'd do dual 52's. Screen real estate is like hard drive space - no matter what you've got, you're going to fill it up. I've got a 23" main and a 17" secondary, and I've managed to fill every inch with palettes and timelines and iChats. As a result, I'm getting another 23". I mean, really - you might as well ask "I'm struggling with whether or not I should get a 500 GB or 750 GB hard drive... but 750 GB might be overkill. What do you think?"

Here's the trick: figure out what it is you need for what you do and do that.

Well I'm sure that for you the dual 23 or 23" and an additional 17" is perfect for you but I'm just saying for me the dual 23" will be overkill. I think the single 30" would be more than enough for everything I'd want to be running, I dont photoshop, fcp, aperture or any of that. I just multitask ALOT so I think it could work.. either way I'll have to check out the 30" again tomarrow to see.

Pretty much I use word, excel sometimes, like to have 2 webpages open next to each other, azureus, parallels, wow open (sometimes), visual hub, dictionary (sometimes), itunes. I guess I could squeeze most of these stuff in 1 30", and 23" I know forsure I can separate the two... hmm.. I could watch a video while working as well on the 2nd 23".. you made me think again, lol. But I will probably get the 30".. just love that size alone.. and if I need more space I'll just keep the 23" and if I do game or something I can still use the 23" to do so.:p

Oh... my head...

I think that 52" Bravia you have is overkill, btw...;)

HEHE, the sony bravia is my favorite toy out of the lot of course next to the mac pro! No regrets whatsoever on the 52" bravia!! I came from a dlp projector of 180" of screen size though...but quality is compared to NONE against the bravia xbr4 =D

LOL - well, I do admire your endless enthusiasm.

And I'd take the 52" over a projection as well... as a matter of fact, I've a 52" Samsung LCD - and I love every chance I get to watch a film on it. Funny enough, it's smaller pixel-wise than my 23", but the 23" looks much better at a 18" viewing distance.

At any rate... just go dual "30. You know you want to. ;)

Lol!! man 2x30" is just way too overkill for me I already know heh.. I'm sure the 1x30" will do me just fine but I guess I wont know until I try it out. But I'll try out the 30" and the 23" as the 2nd monitor and if its just too much then I'll probably sell my 23".

Just brought home the 30" and no dead/stuck pixels and perfect screen... wow this thing is hugeee and gorgeous! I do notice however that the far right side of the display is a teeny bit brighter than the left side but not as bad as last years. I guess a monitor this big cant have 100% even backlighting but just using it without comparing looks very even! I'm glad I made the purchase.. thanks guys!!:D

Now I'm deciding if I'd want to keep my 23" to go along the right side of the 30". It is nice to have an extra monitor but it seems that its unnecessary for the extra 23".

But the 23" ACD is so perfect as well.. maybe I should keep it just to watch videos on or keep windows open on the side. Also use the 23" to play COD4 on it instead of the 30".

Be done with it....................

Sell the 20" and 23" and get a second 30". Remember the longer you wait, the more dissimilar the two screens will become. You know you want to........

It really is fun spending other people's money. I should have been a buyer

I've already returned the 20" a week ago and only have the 23" as the 2nd monitor. Lol, man this 30" so far I can do everything on it with just 1 30" and no need for a 2nd 30".. its over kill for me. But the 2nd 23" isnt so bad and kinda nice to have on the side but I guess I'll use it for the next few days to see if its useful or not but so far I feel as if its not needed.

I'd vote for getting the 30". I'm dying to get one, but am waiting a while to see if they're updated sometime by the summer.

I know some say that 2x23" is better (and I agree if you need 2 things separated but so far for me as a heavy multi tasker, I prefer the 1x30". Its nice to have 1 monitor right in the middle infront of you with being able to have almost everything open at once and shifting around things because its so much bigger space is incredible!

I cant believe I was missing out on using the 30" for so long.

Sell the 23". If you determine you need another display, buy a second 30".

I have used "mismatched" dual displays and the different resolutions make windows resize as you move them between displays and it drove me batty, so I always use matched displays (same model).

For me Definetly 1x30" ACD

I have to made same decision few month ago, I bought 24 and I used to have old 19 sony.... Than I saw 30 ))) guess what I did )))))

when i first bought my mac pro i debated the same question. i ended up buying Dells 24" widescreen display and never looked back. ive owned ACDs and frankly they dont compare. to make things even better is the addition of the HDMI ports on the current generation of dell displays. not to knock on apple but frankly the ACD is almost 7 year old technology at this point. they havn't really changed a thing in way too long.
