Ordered the 4, checked out the Mini at the store this morning, kept the 4.

The screen really is hugely different, and the lack of RAM and slower chip really kill the mini for me despite the killer looks and build quality. The overall experience is just going to be better on the full sized device.

When you haven't looked at the retina screen side by side in a while you do start to forget about it, but side by side, there is no comparison. It's just a joy to look at.

Even BMW makes a base model. And guess what, it doesn't come with leather seats. Same concept.

I'm sure Apple will eventually update it as the tech becomes feasible and cost effective, but for now you have to realize you're buying the low priced option, even if it's a premium brand.

BMW's (I love my 330i) always come with a great engine and superb handling though. To me the screen is the engine in this case. To each their own though.

I have an iPad 3 and probably won't upgrade for a year or so. I went by the Apple Store and checked out both the iPad mini and iPad 4.....both are very nice.

I suppose it really depends on how you plan to use the device and what other gizmos you own. For me, the iPad is my primary computing device, so the mini is probably too small for me, since I do most of my email, notes, and some document creation on my tablet. If I need more horsepower (rarely), I use the family desktop, which is my wife's primary computer.

However, if I had a laptop, I might consider buying the ipad mini as a nice complementary device for ereading, web browsing, short emails, and the like. Of course, a MacBook plus iPad mini is much more expensive than an iPad alone, so this really doesn't make much sense for me, since I can do almost everything I need on my current iPad.

Anyway, this is the thread of logic that I used to convince myself not to buy when I was at the store today. We will see how long I can hold out!:D

but not every apple product comes with a retina screen, not by a long shot: imac, cinema display, macbook air, non-retina versions of 13 and 15 inch MBP, iPad 2. And until the iphone 5 was announced, apple was still selling a non-retina iphone.

My point being that for the mini not to have a retina screen is not out of line with the rest of apple's lineup. They are transitioning to all retina and will certainly get there in the next few years, but they are not there yet. And in fact, the ipad mini has a higher PPI than most (all?) of the other non-retina products I mentioned. I saw it in the apple store tonight and was really quite impressed, given the negativity I'd read.

Received my new iPad 4 this morning - it's still in the brown FedEx box - haven't opened it yet. I stopped by the Apple Store at lunch to look at both the 4 and minis. I really like the form factor of the mini, it's just the non-retina screen that kinda bugs me.
What's your opinion - would you return the 4 for a mini, or keep the 4 and enjoy the retina display?

NO, I got the iPad 4 because the Mini was thankfully sold out and am in love with the A6X processor and of course the retina screen. I strongly advise to keep it!!

It's up to you, some people think that the screen quality is on par with playing a Nintendo game. Maybe your eyes are better but the mini has many advantages over the larger iPad. If the "horribly bad" screen doesn't bother you then you should be good.

Not trying to be argumentative, but curious about the CPU/RAM differences people are experiencing? Have used iPad 2, 3 and Mini with no noticeable difference.

As noted, those 3 are somewhat the same, but the IPad 3 and 4 both have 1 gig of ram. That makes a big difference for multitasking, and will keep the device relevant for longer. Same with the chip on the new iPad.
