im sorry but i dont like to spend a few hundred dollars a year on anti virus [snip]. and the computer was slow out the box. it just got progressively slower so i assumed it was viruses. it probably wasnt considering that i didn't download anything except firefox.
What kind of antivirus are you looking at? The vast majority are $60 or less, and many are free. Look at Microsoft Security Essentials: it's good, lightweight, and free.

Looks like a good deal especially if it suits your needs, but that's a big downgrade. Problems include lack of Enhanced SpeedStep (processor will always run at full or almost full power, so your battery life will be horrid). No hardware virtualization support. Forget running VMs (not something you should be doing with a single core processor anyways).

That laptops HDD spindle speeds looks funky as well. It should probably say 5400RPM, but you never know—might be a shoddy product.

The GPU is a Intel 4500 (not a HD4500) which means you will probably never be able to play HD movies (if you choose to) since the regular 4500 lacks a proper hardware HD decoder.

Wireless is B/G only; depends on your needs, in short that's pretty much obsolete as far as computer ages go.

On the plus side, you get more USB ports and a dial-up modem.

I never liked Celerons.. It's always been Intel or AMD for me. I remember
my old K62/333mhz : ) I also had a Cyrix, that performed alright for its time.

Are you kidding me? That Celeron is 2.2 GHz dual core, not single core, and you obviously don't know your Intel processors.

300 dollars for that computer is an absolute steal. 300 dollars wouldn't even give you an Apple iPod Touch.

Apple is a luxury brand, not a value brand, and some of the arguments in this thread are ridiculous.

Actually, Celeron 900 processor is a single core processor.

But to the topic, $300 for that spec isn't actually bad.
4500M and mediocre cpu will still be able to play some okay HD stuff.

Enjoy :)

Hey, don't knock HP. I've had two HP laptops that were solid mules. The only trouble was that they were forced to run the world's most trouble plagued operating system.

HP makes a decent machine. But the specs on that Walmart special were strictly bargain basement. That's not necessarily bad. For someone who wants to run a browser and basic productivity software to do email and word processing or the occasional spreadsheet, those specs are perfectly OK. For $300 you will not be doing any serious image or video editing. Nor will you be playing any cutting edge games at high frame rates. I'll bet there are millions of people who could get by on that $300 mule for 3-4 years. Not everyone needs or can afford a MBP decked out.

my point still remains. i dont want to pay for that stuff. and i dont want something thats free but not as effective.
