Yeah dude...the deal they are trying to give you isnt right at all. They are replacing your $2500 MBP with a $1700 one. That isnt fair. You paid for the top end 15", they should be giving you another top end one. When Apple replaced my iBook G4 a few years back, they gave me one of equal value. I paid $1300 for the G4 and they gave me a MacBook for the same value.

I agree, that makes no sense given it was a top of the line 15" MBP.

I'm still not sure why Apple sells machines that cost 1600 dollars with integrated graphics.

Then again, I am not sure why nearly 2600 dollars netted me a 9600M GT. I love Apple, but they need to stop using low end components on high end systems.

Thought I might chime in on this!

I had a 15" SR MBP Matte as well, but it was the baseline 2.2.

In order to keep the matte and also get some better specs, I chose to have a 17" 2.6 8600GT 2GB ram. 200/7200 hdd with the high res matte. It was also $100 less than the credit I was allotted ($2000) because it was a refurb

hey guys, thanks a lot for the replies!

Getting a 17" is not an option for me- I want a machine no more than 15" big. So I have decided to convince myself that the glossy will work.

However, i am not happy getting an integrated graphics card. That was a big point for me to buy the machine in the first place. Also, I use a FW drive, but they also support USB, so not all is lost. I just need to buy USB cable for the drive.

I had a feeling that I should at least get a 2.66GHz MBP, but wanted to make sure by asking you guys.

I will call them tomorrow and politely request them to see if they can bump me up.

I even offered to pay them just to get the exact same machine that I have now (2.4ghz SR MBP), but they simply dont carry any.

Try to get the refurbed 2.8 GHz MBP with the 9600GT, or at the very least the refurbed 2.53 GHz with the 9600GT.

Goodluck.

The OP should get a replacement MBP with a dedicated GPU but his defective machine was not the $2500 model, it was $1999 at that time. He has the 2.4Ghz MBP.

I have to disagree. I have the same model which I paid $2499. It was the top of the line when the SRs first came out.

If the OP paid $2000 for his computer, he should get a computer that Apple are selling now, worth $2000.

No more, no less.

^^^^ I agree. I believe the replacement policy is to replace like with like without downgrading the machine. Thus if he paid $2499 for his machine, he should get a replacement worth $2499.

Nope it was the highest end 15" available that time, retailing for $2500

Well i called AppleCare, and they said that the replacement machines are not selected based on the initial price I paid for it, but based on the configuration of the computer i have.

so as per that rule, the lady said the lowend MBP is an acceptable replacement because it has the following upgrades compared to my old laptop:

faster processor
bigger hard drive
better battery (lithium polymer which apparently is better than what I have)
larger RAM
Built in SD card slot

She also mentioned that the video RAM for the replacement machine is 256MB, which is equal to what my old computer has.

She said that she cannot upgrade me to the $1999 machine, even if I pay the $300 difference.

Finally after not getting anywhere, she suggested that if I do not want this replacement machine, I can send my old in and they will repair it for free.

damn I am at loss as to what to do!

Everything else aside; be sure that you can live with the loss of function of the DVI port. If you don't use high end external screens then this is not a factor.

Explain to her the concept of a dedicated video card, show her the images that I uploaded of the keynote that show the 9400M is worse than the 8600M GT. Tell her you need your video card and paid for a dedicated one, thus should be getting one. If that doesn't work, ask for her supervisor.

I wouldn't recommend getting it fixed. The reason they have the policy setup is because if the machine needs repaired that many times, there's something up with it.

Keep us updated.

I own a classic SR mbp, 2.4GHz, with 256MB 8600GT video card. The display is Matte.

The display went bad on the machine, and it had already been in repairs on three different times.

This time Apple said they will replace the machine with a new 15-inch: 2.53GHz MBP (lowest end). My first problem with the machine is that it has glossy display which I cannot stand. But if that was the only issue, I'd prolly let it slide.

My other concern is that the video card (9400m) might not be as good as the 8600GT that I currently have. The girl on the phone (apple care) told me that this is a better video card than the 8600GT, but i think i've read somewhere that its not really true.

So can anyone plz tell me if this is a reasonable replacement? Or should i ask for the next higher one?

Although I truly hope there was an option of matte screen :(

When Apple replaced my iMac they tried to offer me the model that had the integrated video as well. I told them I do video editing and was concerned about performace. They then bumped me up to the next model that had a dedicated video card. The only difference is mine was handled by an Apple Store and you sound like you're dealing with AppleCare. I would push for them to upgrade the MBP they're offering.

I believe the 15" MBP's always started at $1999 until the newest gen, so your 15" SR 2.4GHz one cost you $1999 a few years back. The one they want to replace it with is $1699, so just tell Apple that:

A) Your old one has a dedicated discrete video card so the replacement should have one too.
B) You paid $1999 for yours so an "equivalent replacement" would be the $1999 2.66GHz 15" MBP with discrete 9600GT graphics.

Good luck.

I had my iMac replaced this year and they tried to replace my top end mac with 7600GS with the integrated model. I explained that mine had the dedicated graphics and they bumped it up to the next model.

You are within your rights to get a dedicated graphics machine as it's not like for like and it is a downgrade. Stay firm and you will get the required machine. Like other have stated ask to speak her supervisor. Just stay calm and polite.

Thats ridiculous! You paid for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card, your replacement should include a dedicated graphics card! How she can compare the 8600mGT to the 9400m is beyond me!

You should send her the pictures that were posted earlier on of the comparison between the two.

Dont settle for 2nd best mate!

Totally agree. This is not right at all...you are getting a downgrade, not an upgrade. Sure, the specs might be similar, but you didnt pay $1700, you paid $2500. They should understand that, but apparently they do not. If they wont budge, take the computer and ask them for $800 back.

Removed my post. Just saw the OP's post from his conversation with Apple. Not saying I told ya so but that's business. Still, I agree that it would've been nice for Apple to hook up the OP with at least the $1999 model but the OP's Mac isn't even worth the amount of the low end MBP. He wouldn't get anywhere near $1699 for it if he sold it on Ebay because his machine is almost 3 years old. Some of you guys on this forum think a 6 month old Mac is too outdated to buy. Well, at least he's getting a replacement of a new machine. Keep in mind, most companies, especially Dell, gives refurbs for warranty replacements, at least the OP is getting a new machine.
