I might try calling them again. It doesn't seem right to get a non dedicated graphics card. However, there's something to be said for taking the new one, selling it, and then maybe buying a SR machine on ebay. The extra money would likely be worth the hassle.

I dont see the problem , Easy solution , (A) get the brand new computer they are offering or (b) get your old one fixed. I go for the new one, way better than your old one

Well i called AppleCare, and they said that the replacement machines are not selected based on the initial price I paid for it, but based on the configuration of the computer i have.

so as per that rule, the lady said the lowend MBP is an acceptable replacement because it has the following upgrades compared to my old laptop:

faster processor
bigger hard drive
better battery (lithium polymer which apparently is better than what I have)
larger RAM
Built in SD card slot

She also mentioned that the video RAM for the replacement machine is 256MB, which is equal to what my old computer has.

She said that she cannot upgrade me to the $1999 machine, even if I pay the $300 difference.

Finally after not getting anywhere, she suggested that if I do not want this replacement machine, I can send my old in and they will repair it for free.

damn I am at loss as to what to do!

Sounds to me like you're not making your case correctly. If I were in your shoes, I would be making the following arguments because they are all true.

For me, this would be a downgrade because:

- 8600 M GT with dedicated RAM > 9400M Shared. Period.
- LiPoly, non removable. This would be a capability downgrade for me, as I have 2x spare batteries.
- SD Card. I already have an SD card reader. I actually use my ExpressCard slot.
- Glassy screen. I work outdoors and in conditions in which I have no control over the light.

All four of those would be serious downgrades for me. In fact, all four together would be deal breakers. Since nothing can be done about the last three, the only thing they can do is at least give you a machine with dedicated graphics. If I were in your shoes, if they weren't willing to replace, I'd just go for the repair.

How do you not see a problem with taking what he is being offered? They are giving him a downgrade. The 8600GT is better than the 9400. He is losing the ExpressCard 34. He is getting a slightly better proc, that's it.

OP: Keep fighting, if it fails dude, take what they are offering and sell it and buy what you want. That might be the route.

Or take the mid 15" MBP, sell it on eBay, and buy a used SR MBP, making a couple hundred bucks.

And go a period of a few hours without knowing that you own a MBP? The horror, the horror~!

I wonder if selling a brand new, sealed, in box current gen MBP on ebay would be enough for a last gen uMBP + TechRestore conversion.

I would take the mid 15" if they offered me, and keep it. But the trouble is that they are saying im not qualified for that laptop.

I will be calling them again tomorrow armed with the arguments that have been posted here and see what they say.

thanks yall!

Sure, it's no problem mate. Be sure to tell us how it goes and don't give in :D

By the way, even with the base one, you'd still make some cash on it if you sold it and bought a SR MBP.

I meant the term "weakest" to mean the least appeal not in pure hardware specs.

The 2.26 GHz 13" is very affordable and portable. The 15" without a dedicated GPU really makes me see it as kind of a gray area between portability/performance and not really satisfying either requirement. Just my opinion, that's all. I know everyone sees it differently.

I see. It's nice to see from different viewpoints sometimes. Thanks for the post!:)

Just keep calling until you get one with a better gfx card

I called them up again today, but got a different agent. He looked up my track (I think its a trancript of my conversation with the other agent) and he said that I should be able to get at least the $1999 mbp. he was not sure why the other agent didnt get an approval, so he said he'll check on it and will call back in a few mins.

hope this goes well.

Sounds great! Been reading this the whole time. One thing I have learned time and time again is its always worth calling again and talking to someone else. Amazing how that works.

I got a call back and he said that due to all the inconveiences that i went through, they are offering me the $2500 mbp as a replacement. He also said that since I had a matte display, I can pay $350 and get the 17" with antiglare screen.

I think I'll stick with the new 15" one. I'll call them later in the day and let them know.

Thanks to all of you for helping me out with this. I was going to send in my old machine to be repaired... but calling them several times seems to have worked. its all about finding the right agent :D

Wow, sweet deal! You must've gotten a real nice tech. Well congrats and enjoy the new machine!

Nice!! If I were you I would spend the $350 and get that 17". But, your choice. Enjoy your new computer!

In other words...

I'd like to make my contribution to this thread by showing graphically what just happened between the OP and Apple phone representative:

I see where you are coming from. I see this model as the equivalent of the 15" Macbook that many people were clamouring for prior to the change of line-up. If you don't need the higher specs but want a 15" screen, it's a good option.

edit: doh, it pays to read the whole thread before posting! good result OP!

Man, that's absolutely fantastic. That gives me hope! I'm on my second replacement logic board...once this one dies I'll be suggesting to them that they replace the whole thing with a 17" antiglare and that I pay the difference.

Since they offered that option to you, hopefully I can pull that too!

Congrats man...
