Hmmm.... We have two second gen iPads in the house and both did the update. No complaints so far and in the limited testing I've done they seem to be as good as before. We didn't do clean installs either. These are my daughters iPads so who knows what kind of messy state they are in? :D

So, we've had good luck with the latest OS on second gen iPads.

Here is the way it works. You buy an iOS device. You never ever update it unless you're having a specific issue that will be fixed by an update.

If you want iOS 8, get a new iPad when it comes out.

This tends to be bad from my experience. Sometimes, you are 0.04 updates away from a pretty awesome feature. I think this is the worst as a few years down the line when you want that feature, you realise that you have to update to the latest instead of the 0.04 (in this case ios 8 instead of ios 5).

As a general rule for me, I update to the latest version but stay on the bigger number (ie. iOS 5.XX for iPhone 4S, iOS6.XX for iPhone 5 and so on). I think this way, you get the latest version of your device. And your device is the benchmark for THAT version of iOS. So the latest iOS this year will be based on iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. I suppose iPad Air 2 will have the same A8 chip as the iPhone. I wonder about the iPad Mini though. I'm surprised the iPad Air and iPad Mini are slow with this iOS update. My iPad 2 updated fine to iOS 5.

I have an iPad 2 that I updated last night. It seems ok, but slightly more laggy. Usual tab reload on safari, etc. There are a number of apps like Facebook that take a long time to load, but I am not sure how much is with apps that are not optimized for iOS 8. It is usable, but I am seeing slowdowns.

I have an iPad 3 that I have never updated. It has the yellow left side issue and I don't really use it any longer because staring at the yellow patches bugs the hell out of me. Having a white keyboard would make it even more noticeable.

I will say one thing about my iPad 2. I have been using it for about five hourssince charging, an it is at 74 percent. So it has not affected battery life at all.

usmaak, curious to know what model your iPad 2 is. Therefore is it the iPad 2,4 (smaller 32nm CPU, 11.7 hrs battery life) or the original iPad 2,1 model? Thanks.

Disappearing keyboard characters (I'm typing this on a blank keyboard).

Double hitting home takes 2+ seconds for multitasking to come up.

No obvious way to close the final tab in Safari (pinch to zoom out then hit x button)

Complaints so far and I only finished installing it 10 mins ago.

Plus the whole thing is really slow. Apple really shouldn't let users install this on the iPad 2, it's crap.

Apple shouldn't let industrial hardware engineers design their software and operating systems. Jony Ive has made a mess of things. It's to the point it's sloppy coding. There's no reason why you should have massive stuttering when rotating the screen within the App Store. The inconsistencies in the UI design are not what I have come to expect from Apple. This makes them look bad considering everything they touched or created hardware/software in the past was brilliant because both hardware and software were created to be as simple as possible. We have come from "it just works to damn I hope this works". :p

I use iOS as well as Android and and iOS is making Android look like a better alternative and if Android L pushes the envelope it's going to make potential buyers have a look at the dark side.

There's a little lag but it mostly went away after a couple hard reboots. Other than that it's been working fine for me.

OS 7 was faster, to be sure, in terms of technological age the iPad 2 is a caveman so I'd say it's not half bad.

From Ives' point of view you are just misunderstanding perfection.

Half bad just doesn't cut it. That's Android and Windows 8 talk.

Another bug on iPad 2:

- go into iMessage, make sure you've got a split keyboard and its pushed up a bit from the bottom
- minimise the keyboard
- open the keyboard

The iMessage conversation should be covered by the keyboard and you can't get it to scroll above the keyboard unless you reposition the keyboard.

This is sloppy. How could they not have seen this in testing?!

For a device as old as the iPad 2, with half the RAM of the iPhone 5 or newer, "not half bad" is about what I expected. If the iPad 2 had the same RAM as my phone and had lagginess issues, there would be a complaint to be had but it doesn't.

For what I do on my iPad, the slight app lag (and I'm talking about a no more than 3 second delay) does not bother me. If it was a bigger lag, then I could concede that there is a serious issue but I personally am not experiencing that. Are tabs in safari reloading when I get more than 3-4 open? Yes but again, I expected that.

I upgraded my iPad 2 to 8, I'm very happy. It's no slower at all. My phone rings across the room, got my iPad in my hand, I can answer my phone and handle the call on my iPad without getting up. It's excellent. No problems at all.

Let just say this about that.

I am glad you are not having trouble like others.

I started this thread because I know even with IOS 7.whatever it is, lags on mine so I wanted to find out before I download what trouble people were having.

I won't download because of those opinions and I hate lag and glitches. That's why I buy Apple.

And it won't handoff to my Mac which is my biggest draw.

I will be replacing mine with a new one when they come out over the holidays so I can run the OS as it should run.

I upgraded to iOS8 on my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 and have no complaints. Being able to make and receive phone calls on my iPad 2 and the SMS text messaging (October) alone makes it worth it to me.

However I don't like the how Safari's favorites menu functions or how they switched it to the left side of the screen. I also don't like the frequently visited sites being displayed either.

For the record, Apple says Continuity features won't be on iPad 2 so we may or may not get that capability. I hope we do, because that would be handy while one device or the other is charging, but we may not get it.

I can already answer and make calls from my iPad2, is that Continuity?

I'll be disappointed if SMS doesn't come, but I'm considering buying both a iPhone 6 and a new iPad Air.

Should I Use iOS 8 On iPad 2

Yes, it is but I don't know where the cut off will be because Apple's continuity page says iPad 2 isn't supported, so we may or may not get the text capabilities. Like, for example, I've found that Handoff doesn't work but I do get call notifications, so your mileage may vary.

Continuity features are available on iPhone 5 or later, iPad (4th generation), iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, and iPod touch (5th generation).

Thank you. I'll probably upgrade to an Air either way. This ipad2 has served me well. A very good product I think.

Updated to 8.0 yesterday on my 1G Mini and Safari was HORRIBLE- unusable in fact.

Just downgraded to iOS 7 and the it's amazing how much it's improved.

Op - I'm very satisfied with iOs8's functionality on the iPad2 and between it and the iPhone 5.

Obviously some people have some issues, but remember most people post complaints rather than to say all is well. Also remember some people purchase a device and return it over and over for whatever reason, real or imagined.

Excellent article and analysis. I think for the most part in my situation handoff was the main thing I was looking for for my Mac and Phone.

I'll wait for the new IPad Air2 and keep IOS7 on the IPad 2 and it has been a great machine.

Thanks :)

I've downgraded my iPad 2 to iOS 7.1.2 as I needed iPhoto and I figure that Apple will update iOS 8 with bug fixes soon enough so I may as well wait.

I downloaded IOS 8 on Saturday onto my iPad 2 and have noted a significant loss in battery life. I suppose I need to go into settings and turn some stuff off?
