..As more newer members get avatars its diluting the forums and the ability to see who has been here a while vs the person who just signed up.

The best way to address this issue is to loose the avatars completely and use that space to display the member's sign up date and the number of posts both in small print.

I've been wanting to get the 500 post mark for awhile.
Please don't raise it.

Post faster.

Oh yeah, raise the 500 limit to 5000, make newbies post in white text and don't tell them how to do it, and pick one Regular poster per week to be fed to the alligators.

5000? That would mean only the top like 250 posters have 'tars.

I think I'll pass.

New Avatar requirements

To earn an avatar, I think a change is reasonable:

500 posts

2 years membership

This would perhaps eliminate the rush by NB's to make meaningless posts to pad their post total such as:
+1
Yeah
I want it
Go Apple
Me too
I can hardly wait
I am disappointed

What about the people with over 500 posts and still do not have a tar? We should get something too. :D

Besides just being labeled as indecisive. At least from our girlfriends.

oh yeah: +1

A bunch of you guys must be democrats wanting to promote as many different classes as possible and making this all seem so ridiculously complicated. How about equality for all as far as avatars and general privileges and use a few titles based on number of posts i.e. newbie, beginner, etc. and then for those of you who feel the need to promote your number of posts expand the info on the sidebar something like this.

Now, the one area you might want to put a requirement on is buy/sell and make that available after 30 days and 100 posts so someone doesn't join just to pimp a sale but has to contribute before getting to that area.

I'd also like things the way they are, but if you're going to use the avatar as a basis on which to measure a member's "experience" here, you may as well make it a 500 post and 6 month (maybe 12 month?) membership requirement so that you can't just post 17 times a day for 30 days and get an avatar.

Or how about keeping things the way they are, but putting the post count below the "Location". It's the simple way. You already put the registration date, but if you couple that with your post count, it may be easier to convey the message you want regarding each member.

Bad idea #3: Rather than getting a 75x75 pixel avatar limit, give people small avatars when they reach 500 posts (60x60 pixels), and let long-standing members (4000 posts + 2 years?) have slightly larger avatars (90x90 pixels). It won't make MR look garish, but its still a visible difference.

Of course, I don't mind things they way they are now. ;)

We started that way, with unfortunate results. We had to eliminate the post count displays because they encouraged spamming for post count. Sometimes so do post-count-based avatars, but to a much lesser extent, so that's a tradeoff we've accepted.

God no, please no displaying of post counts beside posts.

I think it would be super duper snazzy if members who have a thousand or several thousand posts and a few years time at MR were allowed slightly larger avatars. ;) Just a few little pixels? Like 85x85 or something?

I like the 500 post count to avatardom thing as it is. BUT it might be nice to have a 6 month clause in there as well to prevent serious spammage.

For every post above 5 in a 24 hour period, remove 3 from the poster's count.

For every post above 20 in a week, remove 5 from the poster's count.

That'll sort them out.

Yeah, I don't like it either, but if the purpose of the avatars is to let newer members know who is a long-term poster at MR, then posting a person's post count could work better than having 500 posts + 6 months experience/groping.

When I go to another forum and see that a person has 17273 posts on a message board about a rather specific topic area, I think, "Wow, that guy has absolutely no life. Me must know what he's talking about."

says the person just shy of 17,000 posts on these boards haha jk

A person's "post count" is absolutely no indicator of whether he/she has something intelligent to say. If that's what people want to know, it would be better to display age + years of experience working in the computer industry. Avatars are most useful as an aid in keeping track of who is involved in the discussion.

Why? That's really stupid. The number of people with more than any threshold of votes will always increase as time goes on, but that doesn't make it any easier to reach the milestone. Also, this whole thing is inane to begin with. It's an internet forum. Posting on here is not an achievement.
