Post pics along the way!

I didn't get to work on it over weekend, but I plan on cutting and hopefully getting it glued together this evening. I simplified the design a bit. Here's a few renders of what it will look like.

The first image is what it will look like from the front. The next two images show a "dissected" view from the top and side, showing the channels that will project the sound.

Again, its a passive speaker system that will be using the tabletop to help project the sound. Kind of similar to the Sounder.

The iPhone dock will be located on the top.

I'll post progression photos later today!

Ok, here's an update with photos.

I have it cut and glued together. All that's left is to sand and stain.

As i mentioned before, i'm by no means a carpenter...and it shows! It's a lot harder than it looks, especially when you don't have the correct tools. I had to make some compromises as well.

I had originally intended to integrate my lightning cable as a dock, but i just couldn't get it right. Instead, it's just a passthrough hole that allows me to use any cable. I may try to add a block back in that has an integrated dock...we'll see.

Honestly, i'm not wild about how the overall design looks. Just looks too "open" to me. I may take another plank and cover the front, then drill large "holes" to hide the internals and allow sound to pass through.

Hopefully, it will look better once completely sanded and stained.

Well, i've been mulling over how to "refine" my design without having to redo it. I think i've come up with a solution that is very simple, but will make it look MUCH better.

I will be adding one more layer to the front with a simple hole pattern at the bottom. This will hide the ugly cuts that i made to the "baffle" design. I have the proper tools to create perfect holes, so it will look MUCH better.

This also allows me to add a proper dock back in without it looking to unsightly.

I'll be working on it this evening.

New render attached.

I updated my Lego dock. After 2 weeks, I decided to center the lightning cable. Finally there is balance.

Btw, if you want just a stand. You can flip open DV tape case. It's great for FaceTime calls.

A small update:

I've added the front panel and have trimmed all of the sides.

All that's left is to drill the front 4 holes, sand, then stain.

I will then install the lightning dock and I'll be good to go!

Here's a quick photo after routing holes and adding the first stain application. The lighting in this photo is a little misleading. For some reason, it looks like the notch where the iPhone sits is a lighter color, it's not.

I've got to admit, it's starting to look awesome!

Looks great! I like the that front a lot better than the open front! :D

Haha, yeah! That was my plan, though. I wanted it to be about the size of a clock radio. Not to mention, since the lightning port is such a strong connection, a hefty base is necessary.

Mine is pretty ghetto. It's wood...but it works!

Can I ask how you fixed your lightning cable as a dock? That's the last step in the process for me, and I want to make sure I do it right.

after looking at it again i thought of it as an ipad dock, too. do you plan to put an ipad in?

Alright...i'm finally finished with my passive speaker dock! It has been stained and 2 coats of polyurethane have been applied.

I have to say, i'm quite proud of it. Since this is really my first foray into woodworking, i thought i did pretty good. And i learned a lot!

And it actually works! The sound is amplified quite a bit once the iPhone is seated at the top.

The only thing that i haven't done is add a fixed "dock" to the top. I'm still thinking in my head about how to do it. I don't want to have to glue my lightning cable to it. Ideally, i would like to be able to remove my cable if i need to for traveling, etc. So, i'm trying to figure out a non-permanent solution to fixing the cable as a dock. Any suggestions?

Anyway, here's a bunch of photos of the final product! Forgive me if they are a bit large!

Wow great job! Love the look of the natural wood contrasting with the phone. What kind of case do you have on your phone? Looks really nice/minimal.

heres my dock. and custom mount for my iPad
