Just because YOUR FAMILY has no issue doesn't mean the other few hundred million users over the past years agree

why u mad bro? youre missing the point. it's simple -- common, non-geek users just dont care. the ipad is an appliance computing device...it's not an enthusiasts device. normal people dont obsess on all the crap most of the readers on here, as techie enthusiasts, do. they surf the web, load facebook, open some videos, look at some pictures, play some dumb games for 10 minutes, and set it down.

it's a generalists device.

No I argue it's the other way around.
They didn't reduce the bezel because the software detects thumbs..
they made the software detect thumbs as a workaround for the reduced bezels.

It's purely cosmetic/cost saving/weight saving/size reduction. And I argue it's not efficient.

chicken and the egg -- hardware & software are designed in tandeem at apple. they clearly wanted to reduce its footprint (volume and weight) which couldnt be done until the software was able to compensate for accidental touches. thus when the mini was designed and produced they had accomplished this.

completely not cosmetic -- makes very real physical difference. the full-sized ipad is almost unwieldy now, compared to routine mini use. (cant count how many times the ipad has fallen on my face when using in bed) thus the drive to repeat the same savings here. i welcome it. it will be a best-seller.

if youre watching movies or playing games w/o the headphones on, any stereo effect youd get on the built-ins is minimal and moot. not even worth worrying about. it's akin to complaining about the built-ins on your TV set.

Without seeing a photo of you, I'm not 100% about your head size, and I shall assume you are human.

Being that the case, I thin you may find your ears are almost the same distance apart as the iPad is wide in landscape mode

Seeing as Apple can only currently manage to design side firing speakers rather than ones the direct the sound towards our face, unlike pretty much any other speaker design on a product before, the sound will be pushed even further to the left and right of the device.

One would suspect this should give excellent stereo separation, when you take into account how close the device is to your face as a tablet

Dumb As A Brick

Back in January, a handful of photos of what was alleged to be the fifth-generation black iPad's rear shell surfaced, showing how the device would take design cues from the iPad mini to offer a smaller form factor with narrower side bezels and more rounded rear edges. An additional photo appeared in late April, but otherwise leaks of the device's rear shell have been scarce. A variety of cases designed to fit the expected iPad 5 form factor have also been appearing in recent months.

FanaticFone now shares some new photos of an alleged fifth-generation iPad rear shell, this time in the silver color that would presumably be paired with a white display assembly as on the iPad mini. The photos highlight several features of the part, including separate volume buttons as opposed to the single rocker button on the current iPad, dual speakers flanking the device's Lightning port along the bottom edge, and a narrower lip for the display assembly than seen on the current iPad.

The report also claims that the Apple logo on the part is silver as on the iPad mini, although it is not clearly shown in any photos. Only the black rear of the Apple logo insert can be seen in a photo of the inside of the shell. A second photo of the shell's bottom edge shows a bit of the logo, but out of focus and at a significant angle, making it difficult to see.

Apple's fifth-generation iPad is expected to launch as soon as next month, with a new iPad mini with Retina display perhaps following soon after.

They could have located speakers at the TOP AND BOTTOM edges so that, in landscape mode, we would get GOOD SEPARATION FOR STEREO sound !!! Wouldn't hurt to have them on the front face to FIRE SOUND AT THE MOVIE VIEWERS INSTEAD OF AT STRANGERS TO THEIR LEFT AND RIGHT !!!!!!!

BUT NNnnnnooooooooohhhh !!!! We have to trash functionality at the altar of minimalist stupidity.

I guess I'll have to buy TWO plastic funnels to redirect the speaker sounds toward me .... after all I will be the one paying for the freaking thing.

Thanks for another stupid design guys.

Let's hope the photos are fake.

They do that just plenty without a flash. But in truth what is the big deal. If they aren't shoving it up in your face or up at a concert blocking everyone, who really cares. Yeah it looks dumb but why should that concern anyone. Folks look rather dumb and act annoying with DSLR etc all the time

While I agree with you that it shouldn't really concern anyone how people use their devices, I don't think people look dump or annoying using their DSLR cameras. That's what these cameras are made for and that's their main purpose. Taking photos with a tablet on the other hand is hardly any different from taking photos with your laptop. It doesn't bother me but looks odd. Mobile phones on the other hand act like point and shoot camera.

You do realize that you look at the logo from the inside, don't you?
It's cut out bigger on the inside so it doesn't fall out when you are holding your ipad screen up.

Yeez people, it's not like they fix that Apple logo with a strap of tape on the inside..

take a look at any Apple product you have. does the logo on the back resemble the one shown at all?

here is what the real logo looks like:

Yes it does. You just have to disassemble it and look at the back logo from the inside.

wow, that does look like the ipad mini, the only thing i want is more color options in the ipad, i'd love to see blue, red and golden versions of the ipad.

this is the beast i am waiting for, bring it out already, i wanna see ipad take back their position, the fist position:D, i wanna see the expression of all those droid fans when they'll see the ipad 5, it's definitely gonna beat all those tabs and galaxy tablets.

want a bit of redesign, i know apple doesn't like to redesign much but i'd LOVE to see a redesign.

but the thing is, you can't find the ipad's functionality in any other tablet and so, even if there isn't a redesign i'm definitely gonna go for the ipad 5.
