The speakers could very well be stereo. The iPad mini's are.

What's the point in Stereo if you place the speakers in the same place?

Might as well put both earbuds in one ear and claim it's stereo! lol

If you really care about sound, you wouldn't care either way since there are far better Bluetooth options.

Why would I want to have to carry around extra pieces of equipment, when all they need to do is what samsung and other do and put a speaker at either end?

Why defend a worse design, when you know speakers either side of the device (even if they were only side firing) would be a better user experience out of the box, which is what we are always shouting about.

Personally, I don't care about the speakers. I don't buy iPads for the sound. Majority of the time it's on silent or I have my headphones in or it's connected to my Jambox.

If the iPad's speakers are important to you, and you disagree with their design choice, vote with your wallet and don't buy it.

They do that just plenty without a flash. But in truth what is the big deal. If they aren't shoving it up in your face or up at a concert blocking everyone, who really cares. Yeah it looks dumb but why should that concern anyone. Folks look rather dumb and act annoying with DSLR etc all the time

The problem is in crowded venues more and more people are using iPads to take pictures even though they have a better camera and their much less obtrusive smartphones.

I was at a university commencement recently where the hysterical relatives of the graduates were standing up in their seats with their iPads above their heads trying to get a video of their child. The first row of such self-centered people successfully blocked the view of everyone behind them. This is despite the fact that the entire ceremony including the walk was being professionally recorded, streamed live, and them made available for free download.

I think that we will start seeing tablet photography--and perhaps tablets themselves banned at certain events and venues as a result. Come the day.

We're entering an era where software and services are the killer features of new devices. There will always be progress on the hardware front, but it is unreasonable to expect generational gains with each release.

it's not with each release though. the iPad has been left fundamentally unchanged since the very first one in 2010. The biggest 'generational' change has been the retina display, and that's it.

I'm calling BS. There's no place to screw in a motherboard or any components outside of the Lightening Dock.

Idea: 4 speakers

Here's an idea for the iPad 6 :D - Four speakers (imagine if the mini had another set of speakers on top), adjust the Left Right channel based on orientation of iPad

There couldn't be any bigger change you can do to a tablet than changing the screen. It's what you look at and interact with.

That's probably because it was a fundamentally great product from the start. It is a essentially display bolted onto a battery. What would you like to see them add that isn't already there?

That has nothing to do with them having iPads. That is simply that they are self centered, rude and tasteless. They would have stood up etc with any camera and been a nuisance.

The solution should have been for the school, given they were filming it for free to 100% ban cameras. To post signs etc that no cameras of any kind are to be used. With a penalty posted if you are caught. Say $500 an incident and your students final transcript and diploma will be with held until you pay it. Most schools hand out empty holders anyway in case someone doesn't show at the last minute so it would be easy to keep the paperwork

This works quite well for dance recitations etc. My nieces dance school records all performances for the very reasonable cost of $10 with a discount if you have more than one student. They are very firm about the no camera rule to the point that you have to sign as part of your contract with the school that you understand that there is zero tolerance. You will be removed from the performance and your children banned from the school with no refunds and no buying the videos. Only took one time for folks to figure out they were dead serious. To the point of turning off the music, raising the house lights and announcing over the sound system for the person that took the photo to remove him or her self from the auditorium or the show would not proceed.

There are lots of things that could be changed that would be greater than the display, at least in terms of its appearance. Stability, battery life and so on

No, because a tablet defines itself through the screen. If the screen is smaller, then it would be a phone.

Now, with the change from a normal screen to retina, the physical size of the screen stays the same, but you can display much more content on it, so it's a very huge upgrade.

EDIT: What I wanted to say: the screen is what connects YOU (as a user) to all the internals, like cpu, graphics power, battery, software, etc.

When the Apple II was thriving with its text based computing system, everyone wanted more of the same. Apple leapfrogged and popularized UI based computers.

When the iPod mini was thriving with its small HD based storage, everyone wanted more of the same, Apple leapfrogged to the flash based nano.

When the iPod video was thriving with its great to use clickwheel and colour screen, everyone wanted more of the same - 'widescreen iPod' - Apple leapfrogged and brought multitouch and the iPhone.

More recently, when people wanted more of the same Mac Pro, Apple leapfrogged and came out with the new thermal core Mac Pro.

see what I'm trying to get at? Apple can't keep playing the lets JUST get better specs game - that's not what it's good at. Right now, the phone and tablet market is stuck in that megahertz race (core # race?) whilst also racing to the bottom in price. Apple needs a differentiating factor - a leapfrog.

I'm calling BS on your comment, because I can see holes in the corners and down the right hand side. They aren't as big as the ones by the lightning port. but they still are there. btw, don't forget they'll be using glue instead in some places to keep it light and thin.

Can't wait for you to annotate the above examples with the number of years that elapsed between the initial introduction of the product and the generational leaps you've cited.

The iPad is ~3.5 years old. It took them 2 years to make the leap to Retina, which was barely over a year ago.

In fact, all iPads have always had stereo speakers. They're insanely close to each other, but try it with an old 60s recording with very pronounced stereo effects.

Apple's fifth-generation iPad is expected to launch as soon as next month, with a new iPad mini with Retina display perhaps following soon after.

I am glad Apple does not do what the fanboi crowd expect. Apple does what it wants to do. And 100+ Billions in the bank says it's working out for Apple very well.

And notice how the supposed leaker on these photos makes sure that none of the back side of the plate showing the Apple serial numbers and other info is showing in the photos. To me it really looks like not showing this into in the photos was very deliberate.

years matter less than competitive pressure.

The Macintosh came when text based computers are getting crowded and has a lot of competitors vying for first place.

The iPod mini market was saturated and was become more and more competitive before Apple leapfrogged into the nano.

The iPod video market was becoming more and more crowded - Creative had released the vision, and Windows PMP was getting more popular - the Zune came out....and Apple shut them all out with the iPhone/iPod touch intro.

Now, there is INTENSE competitive pressure on the phone and tablet markets. The Galaxy and Note series and the Nexus 7 are arguably better devices than what Apple puts out. it's not clear cut anymore like ever before.
Before, you could say the iPod was the best MP3 player. No question.
You can say the Macbook Pro was the best laptop no question.
The best phone? The best tablet?

Hence why I think Apple needs a leapfrog.

camera pics and vids = mildly annoying
iPad pics and vids = annoying to the power of road rage

Shows that not only has the innovation gone from the Apple team but also from it's worshippers... We use iPads to film, edit and upload all our vlog... pfft palms forhead

So you need a flash for video?

Samsung and others design their tablets around a landscape view. Apple designs around portrait orientation.
