Simple questions about os x

I need a utility to be always on the finder title window(forgive me I do not remember the name of this taskbar in mac os x) displaying how many kilobytes I download in realtime.

I have menumeters but it did not doing it such way.
 
I have a pesky problem bugging me since i switched, hope you mac knowers can help. I have a lot of Psd's and Ai's around on several folders on my pc, in windows [ sorry for comparing! ] i selected the Sort by > type feature and id have my folders first, then psd's ai's and then the pictures .jpg , .gif , etc. In finder i select the same option and i get Psd's and Ai's first, then my folders and then all the rest. Is there anyway to have my folders first on the hierachy in finder?

Also, recently out of the blue the fans [ fan? ] on my macbook start spinning really fast, i check the Activity Monitor and Finder is like at 99.8% of the CPU usage, and im not doing anything, so i quit finder and launch it again, i don't think this is healthy though. Any solutions for this?
 
Is there any mac os x tool to copy and store somewhere all my preferences about os x? I do not know if this exist, I am just asking.

If I even need a format-I hope not, I do superduper backups and osx seems very stable-it would be useful sucha thing.

I do not believe there is a way to have the folders be at the top. It annoyed me too, at first, but then I got used to it and it was more natural.
 
Why isync do not communicate with my nokia? I connect it with usb cable.
It does not appear at all.
 
I am having a big .dmg file in my hard disk, about 6gb.
Is there any way to burn it to multiple dvds, with disk utility or other application?
If I do it, how can I restore it?
 
I want some images to have specific dimensions, lets say 300x200 at 72dpi.
Until now I have to open photoshop, images size, save as...
I dont even bother doing an action. I still would have to open photoshop(and it is not universal binary).
I heard about automator.
I am not sure what can be done and how easy.
I would like to throw an image in a specific folder and automaticaly be converted to 300x200 at 72dpi. So simple.

Is there any simple and easy way through mac os x?
 
Is there any apple software to remote administrate a windows pc?
Something to be installed on pc and something on mac?

Well, you have two options:
1. You can download Imagewell , a nice little app that will let you do all those little things you need [ like cropping ] , without having to wait for PS to load. And it's free too.

2. Open photoshop and use the crop and straighten photos function. The photos be cropped to the dimensions you specify in the cropping tool.

I prefer the first one. 🙂
 
My mbp stopped to eject disks when I press the eject key.
I have to go to finder and make 'eject disk' from menu, in order to eject disk.
Why this happens?
 
Yeah, I think thats it.

Should I assume that the fact I only see one number about my battery is due to 10.4.9? No more 100% small tab about my battery.

I think Password is necessary, after all, as a branch of Unix, normal users like you and me, once given root privileges, might do severe damage to the system without even knowing it.

Do you suggest set a password for my account(admin)?
I am in computers about 2 decades(I have experience) but newcomer to the mac world.
Should I set a password or it is not necessary?

I would definitely set one - that alone makes unauthorized access to your personal data harder.

I thought it was all about installations of programs. Only in this case my system asks to give authorization/password.
 
Sometimes I connect to internet using apple usb modem.
Is there any way to see what is the speed of my connection?
I looked at system preferences/network but I did not found anything about it.
 
Finally I put a password to my account. But the system asks for it only when I do an install of a program. How can I set it to be as user login?
