Considering Android phones have had this for a while, it really was Apple that was slow to the game. Just sayin'
Considering Android came out after the iPhone (2007 Cingular), iPhone's got this first.

Derp. Derp, derp..... Derp.
That is all.
To the rest: anybody agree that AT&T had simultaneous voice and data over LTE five years before they even supported LTE, or is this guy wrong?
AT&T has had this since the first iPhone. Let me be the first to welcome Verizon to 2007.
I think VOLTE is there future and i fear that there data network is going to suffer with this packet priority of voice over IP.
When i worked for verizon back in 2002 - 2004 they trained us that CDMA was the best and GSM was a terrible technology. LOL
ATT has had talk and surf for almost a decade now with there first 3g roll out
VZW has been so far behind on this it is not even funny. For reason see abodes
Poor Sprint users. Guess they're the only ones left out for now.
Verizon SUCKS here in Florida and I consistently get faster connections on AT&T LTE than verizons fiber home service so FWIW, it may depend on your location.
And FYI, You may be watching too many Verizon propaganda spots. There are metrics that can support both Verizon and AT&T as better than the other. For the last few years the 4G coverage map was AT&T's win. LTE Speed was AT&Ts win and LTE coverage was verizons only commercial. ( worded very carefully but cleverly)
The voice/data issue has always been the biggest issue with Verizon. A BIG issue! So I agree it changes things for Verizons customers.
One last thing. AT&T has VoLTE in some markets already so not sure where you got your VERY incorrect information. Verizon and AT&T announced very close to the same time.
I'm on Verizon and I've done simultaneous talk and surf on my Note 3 many times. What is it about the iPhone that made it unable to do this?
Never was a mistake.
CDMA allowed them to have a superb dropped call rate as well as excellent spectral density. Great capacity, especially when the 8k vocoders came along with good voice quality.
Did it match GSM/UMTS in all calling features? No, but apparently that wasn't a deciding factor for millions upon millions of subscribers.
They've done extremely well with CDMA, as have many other leading operators around the world.
In fact, CDMA was so impressive, it became the air interface for UMTS, which is something most people aren't aware of.
Since CDMA was optimized for voice, it's a totally open question as to how VoLTE will perform in comparison. LTE is break before make, while CDMA has soft and softer handoff.
I'm optimistic for VoLTE, especially if not moving quickly and undergoing rapid handoffs, but time will tell.
Saying CDMA was a mistake is uninformed.
And att still doesn't have coverage in my area while vzw beams with perfect service everywhere around me! Welcome to 1992

This is my first LTE phone (just upgraded my 4s). I ran speedtest while on hold with verizon a short while ago:

Very impressed so far! Thank you verizon.
I activated the features and all is fine except it makes any ringback tones, the music you can choose for people to listen as they wait to get connected with you, inactive. Boo. So, you have to compromise either cool voice quality & VOIP or ringback tones. Boo Verizon & Apple![]()
VoLTE is going to be a non-issue for bandwidth. It uses slightly less than 200 KB/minute, or about 11 MB/hour. Compared to just about anything else people are doing on network - looking at pictures, streaming video, browsing Facebook, etc, it's negligible.

Verizon began rolling out its Advanced Calling service earlier this week, enabling voice over LTE (VoLTE) capabilities for select devices that support the service, which includes the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.
Numerous iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users are reporting that the VoLTE service is now functional, allowing Verizon iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users to use simultaneous voice and data capabilities for the first time when connected to a 4G LTE network. MacRumors has confirmed that VoLTE is indeed working, enabling users to browse the web or access apps while on a voice call.
In addition to enabling simultaneous voice and data, Verizon's Advanced Calling features also allow for High-Definition voice calls, which are said to be more "natural-sounding" and Verizon-branded video calls.Users can enabled Advanced Calling features by visiting the Verizon website and adding the feature to their accounts. Users also need to make sure both Voice and Data are turned on in the iPhone's Settings app. Go to Settings --> Cellular --> Enable LTE --> Tap Voice & Data.
Verizon's Advanced Calling features are limited to the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus, the LG G2, and the Samsung Galaxy S5.
(Thanks, Will!)

Wow 0.7 MB download - I guess that is not even 3G speed? My daughter's old iPhone 4S (which is not even LTE capable) on T-mobile can do simultaneous voice and data and she gets 5-8 MB downloads while on a call.
Is the iPhone 5s capable of HD Voice ?

Yes it is, but only GSM HD Voice, I believe. I remember taking my 5s to Australia and using a Telstra SIM. I was shocked at just how good the quality was between Telstra subscribers.
