Not being Britisih i am not sure, but isn't the rule for knighting non-british persons that they can recieve the KBE but not the GBE.

I thought only a British subject could be knighted? The US is not even a member of the Commonwealth.

It'll be an honorary one. Actually a virtual knighthood for a computer CEO seems sort of appropriate.

Nice job on the photoshop Mr. A. Is he reading the words off the back of that shield:)

The Queen does have legal immunity and is not subject to criminal law. The Sovereign has immunity from prosecution and cannot be required to give evidence in court, however this is only for the Sovereign and not the rest of the Royals.

so there was this rumor about the secret service rigging princess diana's car....

does this fall on your statement?

They didn't rig it... it was an accident, the whole conspiracy theory was created by that muppet Mohammed Al-fayed, and the numerous 'facts' he's supposed to have known, are for all purposes fabricated.

The Secret Service are not above or beyond the Law and are subject to Criminal Law. The Queen however isn't... it's not my statement, it's the Law.

Reason #365 why we should be a republic...

Yeah. But whats a "GBE"? Guardian? Surely you mean MBE (member - might be wrong though), OBE (umm...pass!) or CBE (citizen of the British emipre).

Oh yeah, for all that are interested, the Metro newspaper said that Bill Gates was "absoulutely delighted" to be receiving a kinghthood...for "outstanding contribution to enterprise" in Britain and for reducing poverty in the developing world and the Commonwealth.

Rumours of Adolf Hitler receiving one for "outstanding contribution to world genetics" remain unfounded.

He has donated or pledged over half his fortune (not that he'll miss it). If you take that into account, he may no longer the wealthiest man in the world.

I'd be dirty for just a small percentage of that :D

Those numbers are just too big to really comprehend. And I'd hate to have to keep track of it all (I know, you'd pay someone - but you'd still have to deal with it)

It's crazy isn't it, I just couldn't get my head around having that much money. Even for those with millions, money is still an object, and you could quite easily spend it. But with $40b in the bank, anything can be yours

Ah, but that's the problem - the total sum is not all cash - that's where you need help keeping track of your holdings.

Someone did come forward and ask if Sir William was interested in helping fund a Manned Trip To Mars :D

Sadly, he declined :p

But if I had that much money, I'd be sorely tempted to do something like that. Or at least pay for a trip, for me, to the Moon :D

And that's the problem, he has all this money, when was the last time you heard him do something exciting with it?

Perhaps not exciting, but Google up 'Gates Foundation', 'AIDS' and 'malaria'. Since 2000 he and his wife have committed over US$3bn to health projects in the developing world (or so I've read).

Bill may not be the most exciting man in the world, and we may not like Microsoft, but I admire what he does with his money and I admire his views on inheritance taxation.

Yes, what he has done with a lot of his money is good and all, but, as well as being sensible with it, I wanna see the biggest yacht in the world! A private Concorde, u know, the little things :D :p

...and the morality of the world continues to decline.

BG does not deserve a Knight Hood.. he has done nothing apart from:

- Making misery for millions of MS users
- Unreliable software
- Reduced competition

Windows is still not usable after all these years.

I have yet to come across a piece of MS software that I consider "Good Quality".

I honestly dont think there is much jealousy between them, is there? They each have such differing opinions about the industry that they dont even care about silly little things like this.

At least I dont.

Easy tiger. Microsoft is founded on compatibility and setting a standard (albeit, a low one). They made money this way, not by making a quality product. Only in the last coupla years have their products gotten better.

XP is very nice. Ive used it for a year and never had problems.

I used OS9 the other day, and it crashed 4 times w/ restart. I almost pulled my hair out. OSX is great, but both Apple and Microsoft have had lemons in the past.

You cant argue with success. I agree that Apple makes a superior product most of the time, but you cant say that a lot of the successes of the technological world stem somewhere from the successes of Microsoft. There are smart engineers there too.
