Bill Gates can never be a 'Sir' in the brittish empire, he is not british for a start, he is 'only' being given an honorary title he IS NOT becoming a knight!

Also knighthoods are to show contribution to the empire (in its modern meaning) and lets be fair he has. Buisness without MS is close to unthinkable and he has done ALOT for charity, although it gauls me to say this, good on him he desevers the regognition for the good he has done.

Dont flame me for this comment, think about it from a non anti-ms point of view..

No, you cannot argue their success, its there to see. However, I firmly believe that if it wasn't micrsooft, then it would be another company, say, IBM, or Digital Research, or maybe even Apple. Computing would be in the same position today, with or without Microsoft - i.e., computesr would be everywhere and they would be cheap.

You cant argue with success. I agree that Apple makes a superior product most of the time, but you cant say that a lot of the successes of the technological world stem somewhere from the successes of Microsoft. There are smart engineers there too.

'Knight' was once a respectable title, now given out like candy.

:(

Amen. I mean I like the rolling stones and Sean Connery and all but come on Sir Mick? Sir Sean? What a freaking joke. How about Sir Air Jordan? Sir Michael Jackson?
Then again does this mean I can challenge Bill to a broadsword battle? The spindly little sucker prob couldn’t even lift it! :p I’ve cleave the wimp in two. :D

I will say it again my boxers after a 40 minute workout deserve the title Sir more then Billy boy Gates.

Yeah, they've got him down for 40billion which doesn't take into account that he and his wife had pledged over 20 to charity. Then again, if it ain't gone yet, it's still yours.

Bill Gates probably makes the least amount of money in the world (he is losing billions every year). In 1999 he had over $150billion.

Corect me if i am wrong here but didnt knights used to fight each other.. and didnt they fight for a damsels and such like and fight dragons..

Exactly... what we need in this country is an excentric multi millionaire that's willing to take on seemingly goofy projects with all that money. Where's the next Howard Huges? I mean, we've got Michael Jackson, but I'm thinking of "exccentric" in a more non-wierdo sort of way.

Gates should buy a large chunk of land and out-Disney Disney World, build the worlds largest derigible, a luxury cruise submarine with lots of windows, etc. SOMETHING.

Screw Bill Gates

What infuriated me completely was Paul Mc Cartney given a knighthood when George Harrison was not honored; George did much more than Paul in terms of broadening Britons' minds: and he wrote gorgeous lyrics and beautiful music. Paul was a songwriter. George was an Artist: someone the whole of England should be very proud of. I love Ringo: but he was just a drummer.

Well...

They could honor John and George with post-humous knighthoods. Has this ever happened? John was much too contriversial at the time of his death to be honored. And I suppose Ringo has to be included at some point: Kinight the Fab Four already! You know, someone should start a thread about this... any Britons on the forum? What do you think? Should your country knight four of your best five-loved countrymen in the world (William Shakespeare) or a monopolistic (albeit philanthropist, yes) geek? Gates has nothing on George or John. Britons: can you petition the queen? I've lived in London, and come to think of it, I never saw placards with suggestions to the queen at Buckingham when she was in town. Is this considered disrespectful? I ramble... Oh yeah, Screw the Pseudo Knight Gates.

We have one his name is Burt Rutan he's certainly not on the level of Hughes but is certainly eccentric in his level of interest and type of designs of air craft. He's certainly throwing a lot of money into Space Ship One his X-Prize entry.

sir (satan is returning) bill gates... i remember finding the following on the net a while ago and found it entertaining, if not a little scarry:

Warning! Bill Gates may be the next antichrist. The real name of the Bill Gates is William Henry Gates III. Nowadays he is known as Bill Gates (III), where "III" means the order of third (3rd). By converting the letters of his name to the ASCII-values you will get the following:
B I L L G A T E S 3
66 + 73 + 76 + 76 + 71 + 65 + 84 + 69 + 83 + 3 = 666

Is the fourth beast Microsoft corporation which represents the power of money? Revelation 13:16 and 13:18 says:
He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads," "and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Bill Gates, the antichrist? Interesting...

Am I the only one who thinks that Gates gives away so much money to charity as a ruse? I mean, it means he gets it as a tax write off, right? So he doesn't pay taxes to the US I'd imagine, that's great. Also he gives money to schools to buy peecees, so he's really just breeding stupidity. I'm not impressed. I hope the Queen is tipsy when she's up there and lops off his head.

I'm sure the recipients, especially the humanitarian organizations, agree with you. They probably wish all billionaires, and millionaires, would join in such ruses.

So? At least he's putting some of it to good use - he realizes, somewhat, that all that money isn't really necessary and can really make a difference - even more than M$.

I hope he continues his humanitarian endeavors.

Exactly whether it be for good reasons or not the money is helping someone. Besides it's not good for people to horde that much money if enough people do it it causes inflation.

According to BBC Breakfast this morning, Gates is to be given the title today. I was gonna start a new thread, but I was good and searched it instead.

Been watching BBC News 24/Breakfast since 5am, looking for signs of fatigue on the presenters. Nothing. Till 6.30am, Dermont and Natasha look like they partied a little too hard last night...

Anyway, someone should send the queen an iPod or something...
