"Siri, did I do something to make you mad at me?"
Now I know why they gave Siri a woman's voice.

Siri actually doesn't have a gender. Siri is sometimes a man, sometimes a woman, depending on the country...

i think that the whole 4 million apple workers that receive the siri messages and send them back to you got food poisoning :D

Yeah... At least mine says, "Sorry, Joei. Something's wrong. Can you try that again?" lolx*.!

Siri is in beta so outages like this are acceptable.

However, with that said, Apple should not be promoting it in 30 second ads or posting it on the front page of their website.
So the situation is acceptable because they stamped a "beta" into a feature that's sold on over 4 million iPhone and a feature that's heavily advertised??? If a competitor were to do the same, it would be torn to shred for incompetence.

Get over yourself. It's beta software. Beta software is not guaranteed to work without hiccups.

I understand that apple says it is beta software. That being said, they are advertising it. They include Siri in their national televisions ads. I think that takes it to a higher standard of maintaining it on Apple's part.

Steve wasn't involved in the development of the 4S and that lack of attention to detail is why this is subpar product. Apple is going down the tubes.

I'm pretty sure Steve worked on the 4S, as well as many other products that haven't event been released yet.

To say that Apple is going down the tubes is ridiculous. They still have really good executives (Cook, Ive, Schiller, Forstall, etc.).

Speaking of lack of attention to detail, the phrase "this is subpar product" is grammatically incorrect.

:D :apple:

Why does siri need network access for routine tasks that dont need web searches? How much processing power does it need to figure out whats in your calendar

It's not figuring-out what's on your calendar that takes the processing power. It's doing the voice-to-text conversion. There isn't enough processor power on the 4S still to do this without help from a server.

Obviously they aren't expecting it to crash all the time or they wouldn't be advertising it. However, Google has labeled lots of things as "beta" that were heavily advertised or promoted. (Picasa, Gmail, Chrome, to name a few).

Anyway, it was out for about 3 hours. Siri isn't mission critical. It's a nice little feature.

"Everything is amazing - and nobody's happy"

Two months ago nobody outside of Apple had ever heard of Siri. And today they are whining and moaning because of a temporary disruption? Some perspective is in order.

Its not like the phone stopped working, or you couldn't send or receive e-mail. Or take pictures, browse the internet, or use any one of the dozens of other Apps you've got on your phone.

Its a new service, technically still in Beta, that is in its first month of consumer release. IOW, Don't be surprised by this. There are, quite literally, a million things that can wrong in a system like Siri that relies on an interconnected chain of hardware and software infrastructure to work right.

This is unacceptable.

Hiw can Apple release the buggy slow mess that is iOS 5, release the 4S late, with Siri & Audio bugs?

How the **** did this **** get out?

Apple is no better than ****ing Microsoft. And they charge more.

I think you should calm the **** down with the ******* profanity buddy, do all hiccups with technology get you ridiculously mad all the time? (Let alone technology in it's beta stage no less)

Seriously, between this and the release date slip of iTunes Match in such an EXTREMELY short period of time shows Apple just isn't on the ball anymore without Steve Jobs at the helm.

He may have been demanding, but dammit, s*** got done and it got done right. Heads would roll if he were there.

And those saying it's beta software and no big deal, try telling that to the non-tech-savvy or the new iPhone converts. They're gonna be pissed and they aren't going to want excuses, no matter how logical.

My iPhone's Siri is working perfectly . It was a little laggy the first time but the second time it was a fast as normal, if not faster.

I understand that and agree with you that the situation was minor. Companies like Google often get mocked for labeling "beta" on a lot of their products, but when Apple does it then it's acceptable. The double-standard is the thing that's troublesome.

Mine has been out all day, and I live in a fairly-densely populated suburb of Detroit.

I think that's because Google releases lots and lots of beta software, whereas Apple really doesn't do it often.

And judging by the response to the Siri outage, I can see why.
