This is probably why its only on the 4S. They probably spent tons on the licence for SIRI from whatever people owned it before, so they have to make a profit on it somehow. If they just distributed it to every iOS device, they would make nothing. They may charge for it down the line, who knows.

I think previous owners of older iPhones would have upgraded anyway. It's not like selling the updated A5 chip and 8mp camera isn't costing additional money for Apple.

Again, selling SIRI for like $19.99 on the app store would more than make up any royalty fees and then some.

The vast majority of people didn't buy the 4S for SIRI. It's a nice feature, but not the selling point, IMO.

When discussing forum members wording, there are times when they're so far off with their usage it's embarassing.

Usually it's native English speakers. I remember the first Korean girl I dated, she used to correct me when I used "don't" and "doesn't" wrong. We seem to favor "don't".

I dont think apple keeps its cash reserves by just "making up royalty fees"

Everyone keeps bashing Apple because they say that Apple could have put Siri on their older iDevices, or that Apple is just using Siri to market the iPhone 4S. Well, let me pose this question... From the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS, what were the killer upgrade features.? Let me post some of them here:
  • Compass
  • Video Recording & Better Battery Life
  • Faster CPU & Processor
  • Faster Download Speeds (for Internet) & Voice Control
Now, Let's look at the iPhone 4S's upgrade from the iPhone 4:
  • Siri
  • Faster Processor and CPU
  • HSPA+ (GSM iPhones)
  • Better Battery Life (Theoritically)
  • Corrected Antenna Issues
  • Proximity Sensor Fix
  • Upgraded Camera (1080p Capture) & World Phone

Let's look at your list.

Better battery life - Hmmm maybe. But not in reality. And it's actually reduced on some specs listed on the Apple site.

Corrected Antenna Issues? What antenna issues. I thought there was no issue - that's what Steve Jobs emailed me when I asked. He not only told me there was no issue - he said that all phones work the same. Yes. I am being cheeky. And yes - I was the one (one of them) who he did email back when I brought it up to him. So the fact that Apple "fixed" this issue/non-issue isn't really a spec to list when talking about improvements. In my opinion.

Same for proximity sensor fix. This is something that was either an issue or not an issue and the fact it's been "corrected" isn't a new feature. I wouldn't count it.

So you have:
[*]Siri
[*]Faster Processor and CPU
[*]HSPA+ (GSM iPhones)
[*]Upgraded Camera (1080p Capture)
[*]World Phone

vs 6 improvements made on the 3 to 3GS. Pretty "even"

my .02

There have been more improvements to the 4S from the 4 than the 3GS to the 3G, but also much more significant improvements. You're also missing the GPU, HSDPA 14.4 (GSM), hardware improvements to the A5 (like the improved ISP, etc.), you've got LPDDR2 RAM, etc., plus you've got the dual antennas. It's a significant improvement, and it does count because they could've done less and still mitigated the death grip issue (so I think) but they went further than that and produced an even better antenna. The iPhone 4 still had great reception because it was more sensitive (it could go down to -121 dbA) now the 4S has even better reception (and doesn't have that weak spot.)
