Random thought: Per the headline, does this mean that Siri would have a 78.5% chance of surviving the Monty Python Bridge of Death? :)

Huh? You’re making the assumption that there are actually more iOS users using Siri than Android users using Google voice/assistant/translate, etc. Considering the market share of Android, statistically Google will always have more data than Apple will.

Oh, and then there’s YouTube transcription. You do the math. Looking at quantity of data, Apple will always be behind.

AI is too complicated to dissect here, but it is one of the most overused and misunderstood Internet memes that "he with the most data wins." In fact, there is a diminishing value to ever more aggregated data once you reach certain thresholds as the AI is "trained." To suggest that Apple, with over a billion Siri equipped devices and which receives over 2 BILLION Siri requests a week "will always be behind" is wrong. This recent test, just one of many, that demonstrates that Siri has already narrowed the gap significantly. Indeed, there are already things that Siri outperforms GA on, as shown in this and other recent testing.

So:

Siri didn't work with Person A with ambient driving noise, but Google Assistant worked with person B without ambient driving noise.

Not exactly a fair test now, is it?

Oh come on, stop trying to defend a lame duck (even if it is an Apple duck). Just about any review that's been carried out verifies that Google Assistant is the one to beat. I have Apple products but I'm more than happy to give credit where it's due to a competitor.

That is the whole point of texting with voice. I can look at the road and respond to messages.

Extensive research in the UK has shown that using a mobile phone whilst driving, even if it's hands free, is more distracting for the driver and more dangerous to other road users than drink driving.

Reseach has shown some people shouldn't be allowed to drive. If you can't talk while driving then I'm not sure what to say.

Texting even hands free uses a different part of the brain than normal conversation. You really need to look at the research in this area. I find the lack of knowledge worrisome indeed.

I can't find anything that isn't about five years old in the area of research. I speculating these studies were found to be flawed.

This study relates to the US, where Apple have the highest market share. I’m the rest of the world android is more dominant so it’s possible that outside for US google assistant is used more.

I don’t know. Trying to say this study is skewed because it’s us based is a bit of a stretch.

There are places like China where google services are essentially banned, so no assistant.

Isn’t China the the largest smartphone market in the world?

Certainly puts to rest all the claims of "no improvement" in Siri, as well as a sizable dent in the claim that Alexa is more accurate.
So you see one poll that you think supports your feelings and you say "puts to rest"? This is not good. This is why we can't have nice things.

78% is still just a "C+"; not something deserving of a scholarship.

Today, I discovered that Siri on my iPad had an open call with a retailer in town. I didn't activate her. She just woke up and called this place that I haven't done business with in about 8+ years. That's a fail.

Edit: Okay, now on second reading of your post, I realize that you and I may actually share the same opinion. D'oh!

I'm going to have to ask you for sources supporting that claim. We know Siri fields 2bn requests every week. Got any numbers for the rest of them?

"The key about things like Siri is to make it not feel like something you have to think about,” he said. Apple is also punching above its weight when it comes to searches: while Siri fields 2 billion requests per week, it’s competing against Google, which, by the estimate of Danny Sullivan, who covers Google and search marketing, completes about 3.85 billion voice searchesa day."

That's a weird calculation to make from numbers from searches from their mobile app on Android. I don't see how that follows at all. How did he even get to that number? 3.85bn inquiries is *10%* of all weekly searches by Google?

Not sure how he arrived at that number.

Here are some additional assumptions: https://searchengineland.com/google-now-handles-2-999-trillion-searches-per-year-250247

Based on 2 trillion searches in 2016 with 20% of them being voice search (whether it's through home/android mobile), you get about 7.7M Google search voice requests per week.

I don't think it's much of a leap considering that there are many more android devices in use in the world if we look at market share.

You didn't provide any data for outside of the US.

Actually, most Android users barely use their device beyond texting apps. Siri is the most used voice assistant by a pretty large margin.

Lot's of info here in the UK on this subject, though may be behind university pay walls. Try Google. Not sure how you come to the conclusion because the reports you have seen are a few years old they must be flawed.

What! where are you getting this stuff from. Please post a link for the source of your assertion.

Because hands-free tech has come a long way in the last five years. The studies I could find were old based on tech that was hard to use hands-free.

The tech may have improved but people's brains are just the same, though I'm making a pretty big leap regarding the latter.

In fact you have to wonder (given people's current behaviour) if we're actually regressing.

I can honestly say that Siri only gives me accurate responses about 10% of the time.
I've tried giving her chance after chance, but she can only handle the simplest of requests like "set a timer for 30 minutes" or "what's the weather?". Any time I try to ask Siri anything deeper, I get "here's what I found on the web..." which is a quick way to piss me off.
