Are these types of comments your form of 'activism'? What went into the components of what you're typing on... making calls on... driving in... flying on... You may want to rethink that, watch another documentary maybe. Watch Blue Gold: Water Wars, that's a good one...

I have no issue with people who use iPads (like the one I'm typing on), or even cases for iPads. Or phones, cars, and planes. Yes, they all have environmental impact, but all they serve a definitive, and often vital purpose.

Where I draw the line is something superfluous, that we have conditioned ourselves to think we need. Do we need iPads? It's arguable, but for some, it's their only means of connecting to the Internet, or expressing themselves, or communicating, etc. So their existence is valid.

No one on the entire planet needs a case for a remote control, period. If you think you need one, it's because you have let yourself become conditioned to fear damaging anything you buy from Apple.

People treat their phones better than they treat their pets. Swarovski cases. Glass screen protectors...glass to protect the glass (!). Insurance policies.

It's all a bit much, but at least a phone warrants a little concern and added protection, due to the sensitive information it holds, and the real problems associated with losing or breaking it.

But after years of buying iPods and iPads and iPhones, Apple consumers, in particular, seem to think they need a case for every stupid thing the company sells. The first sign of zombie shopping disorder was the existence of iPod shuffle cases. No one needs a case to protect something the size and weight of a Frosted Mini Wheat, whose battery will likely die before the case wears out anyway. The latest in the series of blind knee jerk consumerism gone amok is this remote case.

I've discussed my theories about why Apple consumers are so obsessed with scratches and dents before.

I will check out that doc. It looks interesting.

What's a 'line' for you might not be to another user. Maybe your in your 20's... I'm not, and arthritis reminds me it's there after about an hour with the ATV4 remote, it wouldn't if it were thicker -- the only reason I want a case -- my Roku 3 remote was a good size, I didn't consider getting a cover for it. Another poster has a nerve condition that results in random remote 'journeys' -- sometimes to the floor, other time across the room. I'm waiting for the Griffin ATV4 Remote case to become available, it should make the ridiculously thin remote less of a 'pain'.

Any idea how many metric tons of ozone-depleting jet fuel exhaust were required to get your iPad here from China? Thousands, and just for 1 flight.

Everyone 'draws lines', they're not always going to be the same as yours.

Water Wars is a good doc -- watching it I learned, among other things, that for each bottle of water on a store shelf, it takes 3.5 times as much water, per bottle, to manufacture

Ok, you win. Those are good reasons for a "case". In reality, they should market a remote cover as a "grip", because "case" will just cause old grumpy men like me to go on environmental tirades.

Yes, I know the carbon footprint of an iPad is huge. And the carbon footprint of an iPad purchased by a scalper in NYC, only to be stuffed in a duffle bag and carried back to China for resale, is double. But if even one person uses an iPad to do research on something to reduce global warming, oil dependency, or pollution, then it might be worth it.

What's not worth any amount of carbon is a boat load of Chinese rhinestone encrusted Hello Kitty Apple TV remote cases..."grips" notwithstanding.

And don't get me started on cashmere lightning cable sleeves!

If anyone could provide links to the biggest, fattest, tackiest, and most carbon-negative remote cases, I'd really appreciate it. I'm going to buy as many as I can.
After reading through this thread last night, I was compelled to go and burn 60 lbs. of styrofoam in a nature reserve under a condor's nest. I feel much better now.
I'd love to hear some more close-minded idealistic viewpoints when you get done recycling your urine into drinking water.
