I should have known this would be another newbie post. Well since I'm here...

It's only lame for you. Advance or be left behind. It's the way of technology.

Mac fanboys are sounding more and more like religious zealots/cultists. It's gettin' kinda scary....go play with some living things wouldja?

Yeah this topic is stupid. Android is closed too. You need to root your phone to do anything just like you need to jailbreak to do anything on the iPhone.

That's not entirely true. The level of customization that the Android OS provides you out of the box is significantly higher than iOS.

Having said that, Google does all sorts of cool stuff on their apps that run on Android too, so this is not exactly news...

Wow so defensive comments here. I don't know if the OP tried to start an iOS/Android flame war but still he makes a point: there is no Siri for iPhone 4 because, this time, Apple played the closed OS card (my OS, my rules). What's this "if you don't like it, buy Android" nonsense? Can't we love Apple products and criticize them when we feel they're being greedy or somehow abusive?

this. the kids need to calm down in this thread.

You know what they say about successful troll...

Siriously (see what I did there?) there is no single right answer for how to approach OS development. Both Android and iOS are doing very well. If an open OS was so very clearly better, how come it hasn't wiped out the competition? Each has its own benefits and disadvantages.

I would like to see Siri on my iPad 2, however I'm Apple no matter what so if it doesn't come so be it... Won't see me threading the Mac rumors community that I'm going to buy an android phone.

Exactly. I would like a different keyboard on my iPhone something like HTC Sense. Bit there are zero options for that simple customization in iOS pit of the box. But for stock Android devices there are numerous good apps available to install a different keyboard. Very simple and easy.

Why can't Apple allow that ?

There is no point arguing with this guy. His logic is that since an app that is a couple years old and didn't do nearly as much worked on previous phones that this totally new integrated system that does a whole lot more is exactly the same and must be technically able to work. Hence, he has no logic.

Buy an Android then... iOS is not Android, if that's what you want buy it and get out of this iPhone thread.

If I wanted an Android I would not be here I would be in an Android thread, some people are just...

Hint: Honeycomb is still the latest available version of Android. And it's closed.

Sorry ... you are mistaken ... latest phone OS is Gingerbread and its open ... Honeycomb is the tablet equivalent and we are not discussing that :)

The whole point of Open and Closed Source is for Devs and not end-users. All end-users care about are rooting/jailbreak ... they are not going to be touching or playing with the source code.

Of course, if iOS was open source ... SiRi would already be on iPhone 4 and even 3G models ... and that would be only possible with lots of "personal" time by some devs and not Apple or another company ... Of course, that also means lots of bugs and defects coming into play which would end up as being "iPhone has that problem...iPhone cant do that..iPhone freezes...iPhone reboots itself ..." instead of actually blaming the independently developed patch.

Thats the whole pros and cons as far as I see it ...

Peace !

Sorry but you do need to admit they are trying to force the upgrade otherwise they would allow it on the iPad 2. Just saying, I'm as much of an Apple fan as anyone but it's common since.

So what's your logic for why it won't run on the iPad 2 with the same CPU/RAM as the 4S?

How do you know an iPad version is not in the works? There are enough differences between the two products that they may just not be ready with an iPad version yet if they were focusing on the phone first.

What I will agree was kind of ****** was pulling the Siri app from the App store. I could understand not wanting people to be confused but they could have renamed it (Siri Lite) and restricted it to iPhone 4 or older devices.

True. The freedom to install untested and unsuitable software on an Android phone, right out of the box, is really high. ;)

If that's true it's simply because it's on multiple cheap phones... Just like Windows. Means nothing really.
If what's true? iOS having the largest mobile market share? It's a combination of the iPod, iPad, and iPhone (not exactly cheap).

Try and follow this simple conversation were having here please. I'm talking about smartphones.

So what's your logic for why it won't run on the iPad 2 with the same CPU/RAM as the 4S?

There's a couple reasons it might not. One is that non-3G iPads often don't have an available WiFi connection, which makes Siri useless. And some people might get frustrated despite the technical reason for it. The other is that iPhones have superior microphones compared to iPads. They have an additional microphone that monitors ambient noise and uses that to help filter your voice for a cleaner signal. Obviously a cleaner signal is going to yield better results for Siri.

Now I'm saying it won't appear on iPad2, I have no idea, just pointing out a few reasons to be cautious about it.

Uh oh... looks like someones argument is falling apart!

Wait...what?

You can't be serious. You're presented with numbers, you don't like what they say so they "mean nothing really"?

Seriously?

Awesome.
