Only when wearing skinny jeans is it customary to have the iPhone in the back pocket 🤣
I must be a rather uncustomary person then. My phones have been riding around in the back pocket of Dickies carpenter pants and shorts for years now. ;)

I suspect no one wants to hear this but OP’s issue is exactly why I just can’t get by with the current popular size phones, regardless of which pocket used, they’re just too dang big and unwieldy. I tried a 14 for about 1 week and it protruded and fell from my pockets… I honestly cannot fathom how many/most people manage to keep their 14 and 14 plus size phones in their pockets.
Anyway, to OP’s question, no I almost never sit on the phone. Seems very unwise. Side pockets only, and other posters’ good strategies also when possible.

Semi on topic, I miss my one pair of Jnco Jeans. Found this on ebay, might have to get it one of these days, haha:

could fit two phones in each those back pockets! Only $151… lol

Hey all,

I’m considering putting my phone in my back pocket for various reasons and one thing that has been an annoyance when doing so is when I sit down I feel like I have to take the phone out my pocket and find somewhere to put it or hold it. I recently tried sitting on it while sitting on soft seats and it was fine (in a tech21 case)

Now I’m going caseless (can never find a case I like) and I’d like to put the phone in my back pocket and only remove it when sitting on a hard surface.

Anyone have any experience sitting on a larger naked iPhone?

I’d appreciate it if folks wouldn’t tell me I’m dumb for sitting on my phones, insist I need a case, or try it and see what happens. Just looking to leverage the community’s past experience to avoid a very expensive accident.
I would worry about someone stealing your phone from your back pocket. I keep mine in a front trouser pocket. Also, back pockets are usually pretty shallow so the phone will be even more obvious to a thief.

Can’t you just make this decision yourself, is it really necessary to ask random strangers on the internet what they think about something so personal and honestly, quite trivial? I mean, as soon as you put the phone in your back pocket and sit down on it, you’ll know whether you want to continue or not.

Much depends on how heavy you are and the surface you are sitting on but generally it is not good to stress the phone by sitting on it.

Not annoying. At least for me. I consider it to be looking for a safe spot to place my ~$1000 phone so that nothing happens to it. Conveniently, I have established for myself several spots to do this depending on where I am. I've invested small amounts in business card holders over time so that I have several in the house (and at work whenever I was there). These are where my phone goes on the desk at night, on the desk in the front room where I work and on a table when I'm in the garage.

If I'm out, it's no big deal to either put my phone under my thigh or on the table in front of me. In the car it goes in a cupholder or in a small space in front of the shifter (which has a leather piece I laid down years ago so it's not grinding against dust on plastic).

If you're going to go caseless you have to start considering these things. It's part of that and if you do it enough it will become second nature.

Can't help you with pocket lint and such, but will say that I put my phone in my pocket upside down to prevent any dust or lint from getting inside the power port or the speaker grill. Usually though, when I pull it out I will reflexively wipe it against my thigh. And that's another thing to stop worrying about if you do…fingerprints. Accept the fact that your device is going to get fingerprints all over it. Again, I usually just wipe the screen against my thigh if it bothers me enough.

For the record, my wife DOES use cases - and she sits on her phones all the time. I've never had to replace her phones for bending or anything.
2cents: in my experience the top speaker grill is more difficult to clean while the bottom and the port are rather simple to maintain. But then again I put my phone al sorts of ways in whatever pocket is most accessible at the time.
Since having stereo iPhones if I had trouble with a speaker it’s been the top one.
Otherwise agreed. 👍🏻 great way to have your phone there but not in the way.

My mum always has her iPhone 7 in her back pocket and believe it or not, its injuries come from dropping it on the driveway and smashing the glass lens shield.

That’s a good point. Though one of the main reasons I didn’t get the pro max was the heft. JerryRigEverthing did a bend test on the 14+ and there was no flex. I’m mostly worried about cracking the camera or front/back glass
The cameras won’t break, neither should the glass of the back or front, but putting the screen under repeated and extended pressure might cause the screen to develop defects I assume.

Id never call you dumb. however its people just like you that keep Apple in business lol

I wouldn't do it.
They're built pretty sturdily but not necessarily for flexing.

I have an 11 Pro Max. Before that was a Pixel 3a XL and before that was my 6s+ (still have both those phones). Never had a problem, but as I mentioned, I wear Dickies carpenter pants and shorts. Pockets are big enough that the entire Pro Max phone disappears into it.

Before I discovered Dickies, it was Walmart brand carpenter pants and shorts. Those have the same size pockets. My iPhone 5 used to get sideways in one of those pockets. Pretty much been 22 years of those types of pants and shorts.

Before that was just black denim jeans, typically Levis or Wrangler. But that would have been 1999 and earlier and there was no way I was fitting a Samsung flip phone in those. Talk about Pro Max size there.

I wear Dickies carpenter pants or shorts, which entirely covers my 11 Pro Max in the back pocket. Additionally, I tend to wear my shirts untucked and in the winter that includes a sweathshirt. If it's really cold, I'm wearing a jacket as well.

If a thief has X-Ray eyeballs that can see through all that then IDK.

If I'm going to be somewhere where I feel my security is threatened though, yeah I'll use a front pocket.

A device with billions of microscopic transistors and tiny components would seem like a logical thing to not sit on.
Solid state components soldered to a board which is a non structural component. A car with billions of microscopic transistors would seem like a logical thing to not drive.

Are you seriously thinking about it and writing about it? 😂😂😂

Before the days of smartphones, I used to keep my wallet in my back pocket. One day, my leg started tingling and my foot felt like hot sun was shining on it. Went to the doctor. After ruling out the scary stuff (blood clots, etc.), he told me to stop putting my wallet in my back pocket, or at the very least to take it out before sitting down.

Since then, I haven’t kept anything in my back pocket, and my leg hasn’t tingled.
