Unsurprising update but good to see nonetheless. ~5 years Apple systems/displays will be Retina only, hopefully.

It's only a matter of time before:

This is why backups exist.

If you don't have one I'm betting you'll be just as sad about losing your 1 TB of data as I am my 3.

Having a backup isn't an excuse to get a crappy primary drive. Loosing a drive and restoring from backup shouldn't be something you expect to do - it should be something you're prepared to do if forced to, but ideally will never have to.

Apple is offering 3 TB Fusion Drives only with 3.5" drives. So I don't see what you are comparing here with what?

This article is about the 21.5" iMac. Those models use a 2.5" drive. [link]

I think you mean: 'No SSD configuration below X Dollars'. How would a cheaper non-SSD option change the value of the SSD option?

Because Apple's markup is criminal and replacing the drive yourself has been conveniently made VERY difficult and potentially dangerous.

Well, seeing as how I've never had to restore a boot drive in my life but have had to restore countless dead external drives I find your insistence that I move even more of my life to external drives an interesting one.

And 99% of people never have to, and with Fusion Drives 98% will never have to. You are blowing this all out of proportion. I have owned about 30 HDDs, only one of them failed and since it was one of multiple backups there was no restore needed, just a backup taking longer than usual when the replacement drive arrived. Meaning for me, the restore due to hardware failure rate is already below 3%.

So your point is that by definition only the base model will ever come in below your price limit since everything that involves custom configurations from Apple is criminally overpriced?

You talkin' to my Drive? You talkin' to my Drive? You talkin' to my Drive? Then who the hell else are you talkin' to? You talkin' to my Drive? Well my Drive is the only one here. Who the **** do you think you're talking to?

(For the Younglings here, I am quoting from Taxi Driver, a film made in the Stone Age measured in Computer Years)

All of it's overpriced. I'm not talking about the markup for Apple to make a profit, they deserve that, but they go way beyond what is normal.

And the 21.5" iMac are not offered with 3 TB drives of any kind by Apple, so I don't see why bring 3 TB 2.5" drives into the discussion.

3tb 2.5in drives don't exist. Largest one available is 2TB from Samsung... though I suspect many Apple users won't want it because of their (ridiculous) hatred for Samsung.

As 27" Retina only comes with 7200rpm or Fusion on the base models, I'd say this is optimistic (sadly) :(

(Edited as mistakenly stated 5400rpm originally)
Don't forget that the fusion drive can be split apart into a 1TB HD and 128GB SSD. I love that I can buy a base model and not have to crack it open to put an SSD in now.

YOU are accusing people for being haters?

Looking at almost all your posts here actually this is ridiculous.

Which makes oneMadRssn's statement: "Where are you buying 3TB of any kind of drive in the 2.5" form factor these days which is reliable in any way? Everything I've read about the few 3TB spinners is negative negative negative. They're super unreliable." even more puzzling.

They better not gimp it with AMD graphics cards.
What in the world are you talking about? In desktop land, AMD beats Nvidia in ever space but the highest enthusiast cards. If you really want Apple to do something meaningful graphics-wise, ask them to stop putting mobile GPUs in desktop computers.

AMD beats Nvidia? LOL, no.

It's not an accusation of Apple fans hating Samsung, it's a fact. Just look at ANY article on MacRumors that mentions Samsung and you'll see a slew of vitriol as well as racist insults towards the Chinese (eventhough Samsung is based out of South Korea).

It's obvious that Apple are transitioning their entire Mac line to Retina displays. It's only a question of timing. Yawn.
