This bigger iPad would make much more sense if it actually ran OS X. They could call it the "MacPad" or something. Fully-functional Macintosh computer, specialized to work with touch screen (onscreen keyboard, etc.)

I disagree. That's the kind of thinking that gave us the Surface. A touch device should have an interface that was designed for touch not a bastardized system that was made for a keyboard and mouse.

Now I would love to have a touch screen on my Air, in addition to the keyboard and mouse, for those times when it is just as easy to grab an icon and drag it with my finger, but going to a virtual keyboard and mouse on OS X would be a disaster in my opinion. But that is just my opinion.

Was it just yesterday that people were worried about Apple's ability to come up with new products? This is exactly what they were talking about.
Hmm we'll take our iPad / iPhone / laptop and make it faster / slimmer / bigger / smaller.

This is a little over the top.

How about a slightly bigger iPhone... instead of a mega-huge iPad...

If Apple is dumb enough to do this, at least be smart enough to not put a 4:3 display on a 13" tablet.

portrait mode with 16x9 sucks. I love browsing the web in portrait mode on the iPad. books and magazines aren't 16x9, neither should this thing be.

iPad Maxi? Based on the fact nobody is talking about this I can safely assume Maxi is a brand of sanitary towel only available in the UK.

No, it's in the US too, but most of us tied of the whole Pad, Maxi humor thing. It's in the same category now with "Is safari snappier?"

Seeing it next to the MBA, it would be great if there was a video-in adaptor, so that you could use the 12.9" iPad as a second monitor. In fact, I would like that adaptor for all the iPads (I know there are apps to do it wirelessly, but it doesn't seem to be the smooth experience a proper connection would provide).

I don't see the larger one taking on in large numbers. Maybe more for laptop users.

I can't wait until this screen size war is over. I think Jobs was right about the correct sizes for devices. In a few years many will see this.

Making a device larger doesn't make it a better or more innovating device.
The screen size war is only going on so manufacturers can stuff bigger batteries and "better specs" than the competition. There are plenty of android folks lamenting the fact that they can't find smaller phones with the latest specs. Gee, I wonder why?

Why is the 12.9, which is smaller than 13, look that much bigger than the 13" Air?

Because it's a horrible attempt at a render. The "12.9" inch iPad looks more like 15 inches.

The aspect ratio is different on the 13" air and it actually makes a bigger difference then you think. I made a mockup and it looks 7.72x10.34 inches of screen would be the LxW of the larger iPad at 12.9"
The 13.3" Macbook air has a 16:10 ratio instead of iPad's 4:3 so it's screen is close to 7.06x11.3 inches.

It's been a personal want since the original iPad. Surely it's time?

Please make it pressure sensitive! So long Wacom..

Give it a phone function and shut up the "needs a bigger screen" iPhone detractors.

Actually, giving the iPad Mini phone functionality as an optional model would be a genius move for Apple. They wouldn't have to fool with making Apps conform to a new size, they wouldn't have to add another phone to their line, and yet they would appeal to all of the people who want ridiculously large phones. If they were to make a larger screen for the iPhone, I would think this would be a great way to do it.

Then again, I'm completely fine with the current iPhone 5 display size, so I have no clue if this would even make those who want bigger screens happy.

The Mini is not all that much larger than my Android phone - a 5.5" Lenovo K900.

Actually... the iPad Mini has a much larger screen than your 5.5" Android phone.

Name idea needs work

So we want to emphasize big but light:

iPad Maxi Light Days

Naahhh, something about that just isn't working...

the concept is pretty amazing, those slim bezels make it look much more beautiful. let's wait and see what apple brings for us n 2014.:)

What a gorgeous rendering - and a great article too.

I think that a bigger iPad would make a great device.
