I wonder when apple is going to enter the high end gaming market to battle it out with Sony and Microsoft in high end gaming.
At least they can charge 30% to developers without getting sued. 🤪

but all jokes aside , a high end gaming console without shortages and for example a m1x soc , could turn on the heat for ms and Sony , but only when we get battlefield …., cod, etc A+ titles on it, no crossy road , etc.

imagine MacBook Pro hardware without the screen, batteries, keyboard, trackpad, etc. Should be doable for around $500.

but they need A+ games first and no big developer is working on a+ games, otherwise it would have been leaked already.

so perhaps in 2 to 3 years. One can hope.

My take is if the Apple TV were upgraded to the M1(X), there is no reason it could not run macOS or iPad/iOS.

It could be a much lower cost and power consumption alternative to the current Mac Mini hosting service providers use for application development and testing, even Apple's own Xcode Cloud Service, adding to Apple's service revenue stream.

Apple TV Pro -- Starting at $599

(Somehow, Gruber will defend the price...)

Apple is working on a redesigned Apple TV box that will feature a flatter, thinner footprint, and a "plexiglass" top, according to a questionable report from iDropNews.

apple-tv-4k-design.jpg

The report, citing "sources," claims that an Apple TV with a thinner and flatter design is in the works, eliminating the "horribly outdated and bulky" design of the current generation Apple TV. According to the sketchy report, the Apple TV will feature a "plexiglass" top, a design feature that's expected to debut in an upcoming Mac mini. The redesign mentioned in the report is reminiscent of the design of the first-generation Apple TV.

Neither iDropNews nor the author of this report has an established track record, so all of the information should be taken with a large pinch of salt. The report also states that the new Apple TV will have "sharp edges like the iPhone 13, iPad Pro, and iMac." The claim is somewhat moot, considering that the current Apple TV design is already flat-edged with hard edges.

Another rumor in the report is about Apple working on a "Nintendo Switch style gaming console." The information is a regurgitation of previous rumors, claiming that Apple is working on a gaming console to advance its gaming portfolio. Today's rumor states that it will be Apple's take on a "premium hybrid gaming console" and will have performance that "will outperform anything that Microsoft or Sony offers in 2021."

Reliable leaker L0vetodream in 2020 said that Apple is working on a gaming controller, but that's yet to be seen in a consumer product. Apple launched Apple Arcade, its gaming subscription service, in 2019 and has since promoted the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV as powerful devices to play games on. Earlier this year, Apple updated the Apple TV with an A12 Bionic chip, offering even more performance for Apple Arcade games.

Not 100% correct. The A12 offers HDMI 2.0, but in terms of performance, the GPU is actually slower than the A10X in the older Apple TV 4K model. CPU is ~12% faster, GPU is ~12-30% slower. See also: https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-apple_a10x_fusion-1657-vs-apple_a12_bionic-1653

I would say they are comparable. Big pro of the A12 is lower power consumption and cheaper to make.

A Switch like form factor that will outperform a PS5 or Series X, hahahaha.

Apple's chipset designers are very good. They are not magicians however. The thermal window for those consoles is enormous, and there is no prospects of a handheld design that outperforms them for good few years yet.

2 different AppleTVs: the standard one which we have today, very capable and fast, good for apps and casual gaming and the higher tier with much more faster CPU & GPU.

It would be interesting to see a powerful multimedia console … with incredible graphical power for games.

As for something like Nintendo switch … I doubt. I would see faster a proper Apple accessory for the iPhone in the line of Razer Kishi and Backbone. Working well with iPhone cases and all. Maybe something for the iPad also in this line.

History is littered with two-tier gaming platforms that failed miserably. The formula for success in the console market is pretty simple, and just requires four things Apple can't do: superior graphics, lowest possible margins, a controller optimised for gaming, unmissable 1st party titles.

My Gosh. SHRINK EVERYTHING APPLE.

You need a magnifying glass to work on or fix anything APPLE. or just throw it away and buy a new one.

An Apple games console sounds awesome! I was going to get a Steam Deck so I can play Stellaris, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, Horizon Zero Dawn (and hopefully Forbidden West, eventually), etc, but I'll be cancelling that so I can get an Apple console and play Crossy Road!

Honestly... no hate for anyone who has and enjoys an AppleTV but... I can't help but feel like the AppleTV was a major missed opportunity and now just feels like a rudderless product that lacks vision or direction. IMHO It's time for Apple to either get serious and decide what they want to do with this or get out of this market.

Elaborating a bit, aside from bringing some iPhone gaming to the TV, it doesn't really do anything to differentiate itself from the multitude of other set top boxes out there and 90% of what it does can be done by a modern smart TV. Oh and its(relatively) expensive... This isn't like the Mac/iPod/iPhone/iPad/Apple Watch which revolutionized their respective industries, it's just an expensive (albeit a very nice and refined,) also ran...

I can't really disagree with this.

That said, I do love my Apple TV's for their clean onscreen aesthetic, lack of bloatware/crap (except for Apple's) and the performance.

They are overpriced - but great products otherwise
