Right - like all the other rumour slingers are soooo accurate.....

A tiny USB-powered HDMI stick vs. a box would be a reasonable option for someone who didn’t want wired Ethernet, had a TV with spare HDMI and a USB power outlet, and maybe just wanted basic streaming services, not sophisticated apps.

Otherwise, the Apple TV is as small as it needs to be - making it smaller will probably start with needing a power brick, and cramming the connectors closer together. The weight of the current unit is an *advantage* as it stays where it’s put and doesn’t get dragged around by the weight of cables.
Yeah, being able to plug the Apple TV into the switch I already have for my entertainment center stuff is a nice plus. I'd hate to have to put it on the Wifi where it would compete with other Wifi devices when there's an available switch port RIGHT FREAKING THERE!

Plexiglass top on new mini and Apple TV. I hope not. These devices are surely getting thinner and will look like bath weights on a table. I am not so found of apples new design washed out color language. The new iMacs look only good from behind and the front only good in the bathroom.

The ATV3 served me well for almost a decade. Upgraded recently to the latest one. It’s great but 10y ago the ATV3 was light years ahead of my not-so-smart TV..

The latest ATV does so much more that my old one but in it doesn’t really do much more than any random smart TV does these days.

Sure, it theoretically has gaming capability but Apple kinda made sure that never amounted to anything by forcing support for the Siri remote..

I still like it and use it every day but I have a hard time seeing myself buying another one when this one becomes obsolete one day.

IMHO, It’s already a solution for a problem that doesn’t really exist anymore. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah a gaming console more powerful than PS5 or Xbox Series X….why do they even bother posting this stuff
I think apple could be capable to this technically , but they need A+ games at launch to make it a good product.
But developing silicon in a bigger Square box without battery and thermal restraints should not be that hard, apple should be able to get a product out in a years time that matches Sony and Microsoft’s offerings.

TOSLNK, USB, GbE, HDMI ... whatever, as long as it gives a bit perfect output with automatic sample rate switching.

The same goes for the Music app (Audio MIDI Setup) on Mac.
TOSLINK is basically dead and HDMI eARC allows for bitstream Atmos, TOSLINK does not.

Why would Apple do anything to make the aTV more expensive?

The Mac mini, on the other hand, could handle a radical design change.

Assuming you buy a complete new TV and sound system every couple of years.

Also, a secondary audio output is useful if you (say) wanted to play music through a proper hifi rather than a sound bar. I actually dug out my old 2nd gen ATV so I could stream music to my old-school hifi (using an optical to phono converter - so I’d prefer phones but other hifis have TOSLINK) because I prefer how that sounds for music c.f. a 5.1 system (also, because I wanted to mix stuff on several different speaker systems).

I guess there are HDMI-to-analogue audio converters, though.

Thing is, these may be niche uses, but things like TOSLINK or line out jacks are not hugely expensive to include, and Apple aren’t selling stuff at bargain basement prices.
TOSLINK is pretty much dead. My LG C1 does not have TOSLINK, TOSLINK also does not support any of the newer surround sound standards. Apple has always been one for getting rid of old standards, any relatively new AV setup will support ARC or eARC over HDMI along with Airplay.

Xbox has two tiers, seems to be doing ok.

Not sure it would make sense for Apple TV though.
Sure, but they're broadly the same platform just with a HD/4K distinction, where I think the commenter was suggesting only the upper tier would be a credible AAA console.

Finally. Can't wait to clear up all that space in my cavernous media cabinet. /s

As for the look of the thing, art is cyclical and design aesthetic can be as well. What's old is new with a twist thrown in. I mean, the latest iPhone is built upon the design aesthetic of the iPhone 4: glass front and back with a metal band.

I actually think there is a decent chance that Apple will move into handheld gaming. It's something the iPhone is pretty good at and I think they could bring some innovation there and expand their Apple Arcade service. Apple is running up against limited market growth opportunities, especially if they don't want to be considered a monopoly. So moving more into a new category makes sense. It's the same reason why they're trying to create cars and are making TV shows. I just hope they hire some execs to oversee this that get it. Find some visionary indie studio leads to help make it happen. People who understand and are passionate about gaming. Inject some fresh perspectives. Don't hire some old Activision or EA exec.

I have wanted to the ATV to have a camera and take advantage of FaceTime calls. I think this would be very fun with the family. Especially with how the camera follows you on the new iPads.
And I know I don't have to charge my remote that often, it would have been nice for them to ditch the cord and allow wireless charging on the base of the ATV for the remote.

Sadly it doesn't look like that's the way they're going. They launched Apple Arcade with a really interesting selection, and lots of talk about how they were bringing in the best creators to make exclusive games. Then pretty much everything that's come out in the last six months has been repurposed free to play games that are more interested in user retention than creativity.

...and having a TOSLINK port in addition to HDMI would inconvenience people how, exactly? It's not like it would cost you more: this is Apple, they're charging as much as they think they can get away with for a given product type, not some narrow margin on top of the bill of materials.

There is plenty of perfectly good equipment out there that does have TOSLink, and even more that can be connected via a cheap TOSLink-to-phono converter. As I said, I don't want TOSLink to connect to my TV, I want any aux audio output for when I'm using the ATV to play music. You know: stereo. music. To play over my nice old fangled stereo speakers (preferably without having to turn the TV on). That was mixed by folks in the 70s and 80s to sound good on stereo speakers. That I don't want processed into pseudo-5.1. (which can be fun, but not always what I want).

I got an ATV 4K because I might get tempted to buy a new 4k TV and soundbar over the next few years as more stuff comes out in 4k - not because I want to chuck my existing kit on a landfill today.

It has the all important feature of not making you want to bash your head against the wall until there is a head-sized dent because of how horrible modern smart TV interfaces are.

This feature is absolutely worth the premium over just using the smart TV features. I'd even pay twice as much.

"Horribly outdated and bulky'. Really?! The design is absolutely fine and is easy to hide/sit by a TV and looks good.
I mean, the first thing I think when I look at it is, "ye gods! That's mightily horribly outdated and bulky". In fact— nope, sorry, can't keep a straight face. It sits on the shelf and does its thing, why does it need to be smaller, again? But then again, they specifically site "sources", and "sources" is never wrong.

Apple would ruin a gaming console with all their family friendly nonsense if they did get a true console… and there isn’t Macy here in allle arcade that’s true gaming console worthy
Quite seriously, where is this idea about Apple being aggressively “family friendly” coming from? Have you watched See or Servant?

Also have you heard of a little family friendly videogame company called Nintendo

I keep an old ATV3 behind my stereo system as an Airplay receiver for this reason. However, if you're looking for a device to solve this issue, consider this:

Not only does it support AirPlay 2, so it will work better than an old ATV3 for the task, but its has both analog and digital and will show up specifically as "speakers" so you don't have to worry about accidentally sending video to it.

I think Apple is winning at the last couple years of “leaks”. That being said, one of my Apple TVs is mounted to the back of a wall mounted TV and the other is in a closet hooked up to my receiver. To me, as long as size is similar and functionality is as good or better than it is already, I care very little what it looks like.

I would love for it to have a built in TV tunner, antenna hook up and more storage (or USB) to act as a DVR though

Not 100% correct. The A12 offers HDMI 2.0, but in terms of performance, the GPU is actually slower than the A10X in the older Apple TV 4K model. CPU is ~12% faster, GPU is ~12-30% slower. See also: https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-apple_a10x_fusion-1657-vs-apple_a12_bionic-1653

I would say they are comparable. Big pro of the A12 is lower power consumption and cheaper to make.
I seriously didn’t know this when I bought it, 12 to 30% hit on GPU is quite the step back for anything videogames related and the gap towards iPhone 12/13 pros, let alone M1 (which inches around 20000 on gpu geek bench) is just too much.
This could give way then to potentially new AppleTV “Pro”.

On your link tapping, on the “show all FP32 gpu benchmarks” shows at the top some M1X cpu scores, wonder how legit could that be.

An Apple games console sounds awesome! I was going to get a Steam Deck so I can play Stellaris, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, Horizon Zero Dawn (and hopefully Forbidden West, eventually), etc, but I'll be cancelling that so I can get an Apple console and play Crossy Road!
You are right since Crosby Road are much more funnier indeed 🙂

I think AppleTV A12 is faster than the one used in other devices. S as lo games runs great and little faster.
