If the idea is to eventually focus on 2 iPad's on;y, with neither being the mini, wouldn't introducing the "Pro" alongside an iPad Air 3 be more logical? That way the new "Air" could fit into the price-point of the mini and the new "Pro" take over from where the "Air" was.

Focus makes me think different lines: MacBook, iMac and MacPro, those are three very different lines. iPhone 6, 6 Plus, iPod Touch, iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad Pro. Those are all similar lines, very very similar focus. Drastic differences when you compare the use of the smallest to the largest, but very similar products. Add a smaller one, add a larger one, take one out of the middle, and you're not drastically (even minority) changing the focus.

You really expect greedy Apple to lower the starting price of the iPad Air 3 to that of the iPad mini? Not going to happen. This is the same Apple that's charging an extra $100 more for the mini 3 than the mini 2, and the only difference is that the mini 3 has Touch ID.

Adding Touch ID does not cost Apple $100

16GB iPad Air 2 = $499
16GB iPad mini 3 = $399
16GB iPad mini 2 = $299

iPad Pro will probably dual boot iOS and OS X depending on if keyboard is attached or not. Think Microsoft Surface but done 12x better.

iPad Mini should not go anywhere if the sales are there. Being that it was seriously neglected last update unlike any iPad before it may point to not so hot sales.

If the iPad Air doesn't get a refresh until next year, that means it truly is the sweet spot right now and early adopters are getting their money's worth.

Apple iPad will continue go downhill if there is not much updates functionally like true multitasking, predict competition from Microsoft Surface tablet will be strong as a workhorse platform.

Using an iPhone 6 plus negates any real use for the mini now

I dunno... I'd still prefer to use an iPad Mini for certain things.

These two devices aren't exactly interchangeable in my mind:

I wouldn't count the iPad mini as dead yet. If it is a major upgrade then sales might pick up nicely and cause a rethink. The only way I can see the mini going is if something was going to fill the space anyway, perhaps an iPhone++ or something. Or perhaps there is a next big innovation coming up such as an extendible screen.

As a mini 2 user, what would cause me to upgrade is a version with some kind of active stylus.

Stylus is not only desired by artists who need large screens. An 8" iPad with a stylus would be really handy for notetaking.

Without this, I expect I'll just continue to use my mini 2 for another 2 years.

Ditch the mini, and the air 1 no upgrade for the air 2 and a new iPad pro. The Air 2 already has 2gb of RAM and touch ID, just make it the new budget option.

That would be stupid. Why let the Air lag behind? Why discontinue the Mini altogether? Some people only want small tablets. At least keep a lower end dated Mini.

I don't believe it anyways.

Apple is just being stubborn at this point. They know the next step is to make the iPad more than a large iPhone/iPod Touch but they just don't want to do that. So instead the marketing team is thinking up of ways on how to sell a new ipad that does nothing new.

Well, can just suggest any other ideas?..aside from putting OSX on ipad since it's clearly not designed for touch. You can now get iWork for free,Office for iPad,split screen multitasking,Apple and IBM are creating iPad apps for various industries etc.I mean, what else would you expect an iPad to do?

I think I agree with axing the mini. After having owned the first mini and with my wife currently using the iPad mini 3, I always love going back to the larger screen. My wife too wants to upgrade to the Air next. I just feel that the mini isn't that much of a compelling device, especially now since we have the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

And two sizes will always be the maximum number of choices coming from Apple so I can see why they might be planning dropping the mini.

iPad pro will be a dual boot.
With special keyboard cover /dock by Apple you can choose between iOS and OS X . Without the cover/dock you can only boot iOS .

iPad mini won' t be discontinued.
It makes sense that there won' t be an iPad Air 3 till 2016. Air 2 is advanced, fast and thin enough and iOS 9 with multitasking features will make it an entirely new machine with new possibilities.

The tablet is generally is going to die down if they do not have desktop capabilities. Most tablets today are just blown up smartphones.

Tablets need to be more productive.

Apple needs to make an iPad that is like the surface pro.

Using an iPhone 6 plus negates any real use for the mini now, will probably get the air 2 depending on whether the air 3 is a real update or not, weighing up the balance between cost and performance.

I have both iPhone 6+ and iPad mini. The mini still gets heavily used. I still use my mini for gaming and reading.

In my case I'm not worried, I upgrade my iPad every 3-4 years. It's one device that specs do not matter for me.

I use my iPad Mini 2 daily; in fact it's my most used device. I use it for several work tasks, and it's easily portable to meetings etc.

My iPhone 5s suits my pocket, and when out and about/evenings.

So this combination of sizes works for me. I therefore am unlikely to upgrade any time soon if these sizes are phased out.
