i don't think they'll just remove the mini, it will be like iPod touch, standing in stores with same internals and annual price drops for 3 years, and with 2gb ram and gamut i don't think mini needs anything else for years.

hmm... well they did update the iPad too soon one year for the lightning cable
"the new ipad" is taking his revenge!

I wonder if the change to allow anyone to program iToys foreshadows an Xcode release that runs on the iPad pro.

Xcode, a stylus, and Pixelmator; the perfect mobile dev suite. :)

Using an iPhone 6 plus negates any real use for the mini now, will probably get the air 2 depending on whether the air 3 is a real update or not, weighing up the balance between cost and performance.

You do realize that they didn't send every iPad Mini owner a free iPhone 6+ or anything, yeah??
I think the costumer base that has both must be incredibly small...

I'm in for a thinner/lighter iPad mini. Laminated screen and force touch please.

If the iPad Pro has the same software as the rest I can't really see it taking off. But if it does something similar to Microsoft's Surface..

Not even a rumor worth repeating. If you think about it it makes zero sense not to update the Air 2. It would be suicidal for the entire line. The 12" is a niche product, likely to be way more expensive than a casual user is willing to pay, and for the mini to have better specs than the Air certainly will leave a bad taste in consumer's mouths.

The mini is way due for an update. I can't imagine Apple is going to update it just to kill it off. Apple doesn't release individual sales # so hard to know the sales ratio of mini to Air, but Apple not updating the mini last year (realistically) could not have helped it. It's a great size for reading, browsing, games. If it does go away it's a mismanagement bungle by Apple execs.

I had an iPad first off and found reading on it awkward, it put a strain on my wrist when hosting it with one hand. So I opted for a Mini and love it. It has been around the world with me twice so far.

If the mini goes.... well its a Kindle next for me.

iPhone 6+ is closer in size to the iPad Mini than the iPad Mini is to the iPad Air.

I'm personally planning to buy an Air 2 next month for grad school, so I'm interested to see how this rumor pans out. I'm tempted to wait until September and see what happens, but I may not be able to wait..

I'm glad it's a sketchy rumor. I doubt Apple would let the Air go by without even a small modest update like they did with the mini. All they added to that was Touch ID but at least folks buying new for the first time or replacing an aging damaged iPad Mini could get "something" that their previous model didn't have.

After 6 months to a year they need to at least update the speed or add RAM or something.

How exactly would you want to update the Air 2, if the 6S will be mostly a little improvement with force touch? Unless Apple introduces Force Touch to the Air 2, there's nothing more to stand out. Yet they took 1 full year to include Touch ID in the iPad line, so they'll likely do the same with the Air 2 regarding Force Touch.
People don't upgrade iPads nearly as fast their iPhones, so there's no need to really upgrade the already great Air 2.
The report doesn't seem "sketchy" to me at all.

Hmm. Any chance we might see an official Apple pressure-sensitive stylus to go with this iPad "Pro"? Because, you know, us "Pros" who like to use the iPad for sketching/drawing would love something that actually works, with palm recognition and Wacom-like functionality. Or, when will Apple just up and buy Wacom?

+1 from me on this. Since the launch of StaffPad, which requires the palm recognition and active pen of the Surface Pro 3, I am increasingly likely to replace my iPad 4th Gen with a Surface Pro in the foreseeable future. There are handwriting notation apps for the iPad, but the hardware limitations hinder the quality of results and general usability.

Not much to update on the air 2. The air 2 is like going from the original iPad to the iPad 2. It was a big jump.

here's a thought: no "iPad air 3" because that form factor will just be called (drum roll...) "iPad". shocking, i know...

but just like the iPhone, two sizes - one regular and one 'plus/pro' would be the focus, and as an appeasement to the mini-lovers, just make the last mini as powerful as the iPad air 2. then let the market decide if it's still a viable product down the road.

i really think eventually the number and 's' model categorization will sound dumb eventually, and it's very apple-y to just call each new years' model the 'NEW macbook/iphone/ipad/etc' ... we could unofficially call them whatever we want, it just doesn't have to be what they list on the apple site.

at this point, apple is known for only releasing a couple sizes of nearly identical hardware year after year. you know what they offer, so it's New or its Old. this 'number stuff' is for other companies and their dozens of models.

Apple doesn't release an updated iPad Mini. No one buys it because there's no point. Then Apple decides to only have one more update and focus on the larger models because people buy those...
I prefer the Mini. If they release the "iPad Pro" and it runs IOS, that will be humorous. They will need it to run OS X. IOS is to limited to be an actual laptop replacement.

This dual OS on an iPad "Pro" talk makes zero sense. Apple would never have introduced the retina MacBook if their plans were to bring OS X to a tablet. In many ways the MacBook is iPad like with one port and similar colors. I think that signaled their intentions pretty clearly.

That was also a curiosity of mine. How does an enormous company like Apple get so disorientated with it's names. Think about all the names for iPhones and iPads. When they came out with "The New iPad" I about laughed myself silly.

iPad
iPad 2
The New iPad
ipad
ipad Air
iPad Air 2

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 4
iPhone 4s
iPhone 5
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6plus

Apple, stick to a naming convention and make it yours. It's embarrassing.

pixelmator won't be powerful enough to woo pro's away from the Surface pro. not in many many years. we need photoshop at the very minimum. no one i've ever talked to in the industry wants a pro tablet running iOS. it's simply not going to cut it.

pixelmator is like a tic tac toe toddler compared to the adobe chess master.

Who says an iPad "Pro" is supposed to be a laptop replacement. And what's the point of the new retina MacBook if Apple throws OS X on a 12" iPad?

I don't understand the hate towards the mini. I love mine. It is way more portable than when I had an iPad. Why can't we have three?

Completely agree! I have both an Air and a mini, but end up using the mini most. I don't see any reason not to keep three sizes

to a lot of people it's supposed to be a surface pro competitor. many people have held off on succumbing to a windows machine in the hopes that apple will give us something not only on par, but better. iOS would kill the pro. KILL.

clearly not many people on MR agree with me here, but i know plenty of folks who would be very disappointed. and finally buy a surface pro (cause it does what it should and does it pretty well).

Am I the only one that thinks these so called reports are only shots in the dark in the hope of driving traffic to their websites?

And if they get lucky with a "report", then months on down the line when they come up with new ones the fact that they were 'right' lends them imaginary credibility?

"One last iPad mini"

I like the sound of that. It warms my heart to know that they won't be having an endless supply of products, that it's time to move on and begin with something new.
